Wandering round Tesco last night, found some CDs on offer, 2 albums in one package and they were on a 2 for tenner offer anyway... Result... So I bought 3 or 4 of these things, mostly albums I had on cassette or vinyl, thinking it'd be a good opportunity to get them onto my computer and MP3 player... Only problem is the damn things don't play 'normally' on the laptop - put the CD in and it opens it's own Player to play them, can't play them on Media Player or Realplayer, so can't copy them, can't access the individual files through My Computer... So I can't do the one thing I actually bought them for! It doesn't say owt on the atual CDs or cases about them being copy-protected or anything...

Have you tried CDex for extracting the tracks from the disc? I am not as clever as Cambo of course, but that programme works for me :nod:

To begin with, I'd try holding down the left Shift key when you close the tray on your CD drive. Wait for about a minute just to be sure the disc was fully read but that should stop the player from appearing unless it's relatively new software. Holding down Shift in general disables the Windows Autoplay function which helps the player run (I have mine permanently disabled).

If the player doesn't come up, try ripping the disc as you normally would.

I've yet to come across an audio CD that can't be ripped with the correct software; even so-called protected ones so I wouldn't worry too much.

Exact Audio Copy is a very good freeware ripper as well - recommended!

Shows you what a good idea Copy Protection was! :lol:

The way I used to get round it (for those persistant buggers) was to do a disc-to-disc copy (via EasyCD Creator or something similar), and the copy protection vanished! :p

Nope, it was the first gnome pic I found... Maybe I need to be a bit more choosy when it comes to garden ornaments... :shrug:

Still can't get this sorted... Holding down shift stops the player loading automatically but when you click on the disc drive in My Computer it starts the player automatically - opening the disc doesn't reveal any tracks just the player files... CDex won't let me copy them as they come up as Data tracks and not audio... :confused2:

Some of the so called "Uncopyable Discs", just need a bit of doctoring.

Grab a black texta and draw on the inner circle of the CD, painting a circle around the inner circle can remove the cd's copyright aspects and make it writable.

I think this only works with Sony Copyrighted Discs though.

Have you tried Exact Audio Copy (as mentioned by Ally)?

Basically, you should be able to copy to either a CD or extract as WAV files... The latter can then be used to burn back to an audio CD...

Wish I could be of more help, but multimedia is just so hard and such poor results in Windows I simply do not bother.

I wonder if Knoppix comes with "rip" installed.

I've tried various things, but still no joy... Resigned to having to just listen to them at home... It's not as if I've not got other stuff to listen to on the move... Hell, I've got a whole iPod just dedicated to NO live... :lol: Cheers for the advice though...
