Evel seemed like kind of a dickhead who just did stuff for attention. He lived to be 69 which was more than he could have ever expected, whatever. I suppose he was sort of an early pioneer for reality TV and self attention websites, I guess somebody had to do it.
Broke his back seven times apparently.
Once is unfortunate, twice is unlucky, but seven? That's just plain silly.

Said he would do something, then started trying to work out how he would do it. Sometimes he realised he would fail, but he did it anyway because he'd rather fail than go back on his word. Death was nothing compared to dishonour. And most of his major fcuk ups made him an awful lot of money.

The things he tried simply wouldn't be alowed these days - he was already banned from performing in several states. So for people of my age he's a memory of a less-regulated time, a time when you were perfectly at liberty to do what you wanted to do as long as you weren't harming anyone else.
Once the right to place oneself at risk is taken away, the distinction between harming oneself and harming anyone else is lost. That's why today's kids use their BMXs to escape after mugging old ladies rather than bothering to learn any proper stunts.
Sales of knee pads and helmets have, accordingly, plummeted.

I would have thought just the opposite with what I'm seeing. Extreme sports(and their related injuries) seem to be more popular today than ever, at least here in the US. I've seen things done on bicycles, motorcycles, skateboards, etc. lately that were unfathomable just a decade ago.
