erm , although i never caught em live i've still got the cassette of their gig in Norwich April 92 and the songs that were soon to appear on their Babe Rainbow album pissed on the recorded studio versions on said album

I had the misfortune of turning on the telly the other night and finding BBC1 broadcasting a live gig of his .Did you see it? Needless to say i was scrambling frantically for the remote control

talking heads. Honestly they didn't make much sense to me until i saw 'stop making sense'. I Still don't think their proper albums capture their energy.

i really do think hannet was genius, but you have to admit that joy division would of been much more heavier without him. I wouldn't trade his production but can you imagine New dawn fades without him. Would be heavier then shit.

aye would have been interesting to hear what they would have sounded like without Hannett .... who knows.Would have liked to hear Atrocity Exhibition without that workmans drill sound but then again it adds to the track.

I actually found Closer too heavy on first listen all those years ago and didn't appreciate it til way later.Unknown Pleasures on the other hand i loved on first listen

I dunno, I like Hannet with Joy Division, because the tracks sound timeless and fresh on the radio today... he tried the same with the New FADS; stripped them down, and it didnt work at all. Last band he produced I believe, and I understood they had an accident with him in a shopping trolley or summink. At the time, New FADS were building such a huge fearsome live rep, all they needed was a producer who could cut some of what they did onstage, to break into the mainstream. Second album was better in 1994, but by then it was too late.

Unfortunately with the New Fads he made them sound like it had been recorded in 1979, when in the early 90's a more richer sound was required, as NO had done with Technique.

Chris, can you really form an opinion when most of these bands you are quoting are completely out of your time?

Saw Ministry about '91 or '92, live they were just like a fcuking metal band - not a patch on the studio work.

The Wedding Present will still be on the George Best tour will they not? Again you've seen a band well past their prime, playing stuff from before their prime, different line up, you're not familiar with the tracks etc etc

Basically I don't think you are in a poosition to judge. In their day they were ace, today it's just an excuse for us old buggers to relive their past and enjoy an evening out.

The Cure.

The albums they did in the '90s were either as great live as they were on record, Wish and Bloodflowers, or better live than on record, Wild Mood Swings and the self-titled one. I had heard the self-titled songs live first and thought they sounded great, but when I bought the record a month later, the Ross Robinson production totally wiped anything good out. No wonder Simon Gallup tried to punch his teeth in.

I disagree of course. Gigs in the late eighties, particularly the Low Life stuff often blew me away. I used to think songs like Subculture and BLT sounded better live cos Barney sped up the chorus. But you are right on 'hit-and-miss'. That was a plus point though. The post-1998 NO has been much more stable but arguably much more boring. No big surprises, or moments of surprise genius.

I would say New Order. The live versions of temptation, face up and ceremony really crack. Plus some of the youtube footage I have seen from circa 84/5 for me has a much better impact than the same songs recorded on Lowlife.

This is exactly why I posed this. New Order live are so much more than the performance and I would daresay that you can appreciate some of the video footage only if you've seen them live.
