I really am starting to wonder what the issue is. There have been a slew of these type of rampages, and its only increasing. I wonder what social issue that is really driving this for so many to think this is an acceptable action within their minds... a pattern is showing, I just don't really see what is causing it...

Not sure it's an increasing trend. Probably just another symptom of the modern age. That's why I live in a treehouse in the mountains.

buddy, it all starts from the top. When the country is ran by violence as first resort men it pollutes the whole society.

Tasteless as it is to start speculating so soon, but that does seem to be a part of the motivation for these events. Everyone wants to be noticed. (Which, distrubingly, suggests that the solution could be lots more reality TV shows, giving folk a less harmful way to achieve their 15 minutes.)

We live in a culture of violence.

Our boys are given toy guns and soldiers and taught early on that power comes at the point of a gun, but seldom are they taught the responsibility that comes with that. We have music targeted at suburban youth that talks about how the way to survive urban life "in tha hood" is by being a badass and shooting people. We have "news" channels that provide sensational reports of crime and warfare as entertainment.

Is it any wonder?

That's such a weak arguement. The gun laws have been around since the start of the nation and there weren't issues like this, happening at the rate they do, until the last 20 years. Though gun laws may allow people to own the guns, it really doesn't answer the question as it is a societal issue... Japan has some pretty gruesome massacres even though they have no guns... for instance a teenaged boy cut the heads off of three toddlers and stuck them up on the school fence about 5 years ago...

So more or less is are you refering to a lack of parenting in this day and age? Both parents are working to pay off thier new RV and cars that they aren't giving junior the proper supervision and moral backbone to know right from wrong? I'm not disagreeing, just hoping for more of your thoughts on this.

and also (and Cambo is gonna love this), but could the loss of religon in the household becoming also a loss of morals within the child?

As for the media, I really think we need to get commercialized news off the air. Running news on a Public Broadcasting System would be much better, though I know people are worried about the government controling the news we get... but our current system reaks of problems..

On this note, one thing I always notice is that the kid is usually introverted. Usually bottling up thier anger and exploding. I wonder if it is in relation to the "no fighting" rules at schools now-a-days. No matter who gets in a fight they are both considered at fault and both suspended. This gives kids no way to deal with thier problems on the playground, getting thier frustration out instead of bottling it up....

That pretty much exactly what I'm saying. Parents don't care where their kids are or who they're with anymore. They're too busy making sure their salary and their SUV is bigger than their neighbors.

I will disagree on the religion point, though. Religion as a motivator for social morals simply doesn't work anymore. No kid is gonna buy a message preached by people thousands of years ago about how to be ready for an uncertain "next life" when we, in our consumer culture, are bombarded with messages showing us how to live well right now. Kids don't care about getting into heaven. They just want a Wii under the tree at Christmas.

Also, this is anecdotal, but from my personal experience living in the southern US, I've found that religious zealots tend to be the most ironic people. It's the ones that make a big deal about memorizing bible verses and going to church twice a week that are the ones that invariably are more likely to be found staggering out of a bar or cheating on their spouses.

Not only that, but often it's the deluded religious nuts that are doing all the killing that gets reported on the news every day. That's not exactly setting a good example.

As for the news, the problem is that the news we get is already being controlled by corporate interests. Fox News and CNN are bound to corporate and to their advertisers to get higher ratings and show only the news that will keep people's attention, rather than the news that's actually important.

My advice, is stop watching the news on TV and READ. Get it from as many varied sources on the web as possible and form your own conclusions based on that. Not only are you likely to filter out biased reporting that way, but you can also skip the garbage like OJ and Paris Hilton.

Good point there. This has become more severe in recent years thanks to Columbine, et al, which gives another interesting causal possibility.
