I am a computer salesman (not used car, thank you) at a big box office Supply store. The past year has brought Windows Vista which has been discussed a LOT around here.

Seeing how Vista is the future blah blah, I saw this computer at my work the other day and was stunned.

yep that is correct, a new laptop with XP Professional installed. It was bound to happen.

the way things are going, my work will skip vista and I will be on linux shortly. I have found a user who assures me he can install it without buggering my hard drive up.

I have met computer professionals who will take out Vista and install XP for the price of an XP license. They are doing quite the business.

It involves

1. Finding all the XP drivers and burning them to disc (finding them can be not fun)

2. Doing a complete erasing/nuking of the Vista Drive

3. Install XP and off you go....

Let a professional do it. If you mess it up, you have a nice paperweight.

I have looked at a Black Macbook myself. the Apple computer sales and overall Q rating have never been this high.

It took awhile to take control of Vista, but it actually allows you to control things more than XP. You can easily stop all those damn things that run in the backround and bog the system.

Before My computer used to run at 50% at an idle! and stupid security windows poped up for everything. Unchecked some boxes, and now running 5% at an idle and no stupid windows popping up.

Its not hard to fix, but not exactly straightforward either....

What are the actual issues with Vista? Other than using up so much extra computer resources just to have prettier windows and be even more bloated to try and accomidate everything and everybody. Guess microsoft made their new graphic stuff (like DirectX 10) only compatible with Vista, other than that it has no advantage? To make it "simplier" and more dumbed down for the lowest common denominator they sure have made the file system confusing as hell compared to the past.

Its not the 'prettier' windows that bogs things down, as I also heard from everyone. Vista runs ALOT of programs in the backround, so when you click on something it theoretically automatically plays faster (as it doesn't have to start the program). Problem is that all these programs bog down the system and everything runs slower... and actually freezes up more often as it is real easy for the computer to hit 100% cpu use.

Also there are security windows that ask you everything, to protect you, but most of the time its just annoying.. (like "are you sure you want to go to this website"... click yes..." are you REALLY sure you want to go to this website?"... click, yes.... "Windows really advises against going to this website".... (and this was for NOOL )

The other issue is compatibility with Fat 32, which alot of older drives were formated with. Vista can read them, but you have to screw with things abit.

There are alot of benefits with Vista that I like... actually prefer Vista to XP.... but it took sometime for me to wrap my head around it.

Performance is tits, compatibility is non existent, and the thing is ALERGIC to intel CPU's

(two identical machines apart from CPU, one AMD and the other a slightly faster Intel....Vista gave the AMD 5.6 (amusing since there is thereofre clearly no machine available that would get 10), and the intel....3.1, and "too slow for aero".

Out of the box Vista is crap... only by messing around with it for hours did I get it the way I wanted, now it runs fast, smooth, and better than XP (as it also has more options to fanagle things than XP).

Now I wouldn't want to reboot vista ever, as I don't know if I'll remember how I got everything the way I did...

oh, I forgot.....

Aye, my folks have just got a new laptop and even my Dad, who knows very little about such things is moaning about how pants Vista is... First time I used it, I wondered if it was just that I hadn't got used to it yet, but, no, it really does suck Satan's bell...

My new laptop crashes at least once a day and i suspect it's because Vista doesn't get on with any of my new installations. Very frustrating.

Any advice on how to make it run a little better?

bah operating systems are my profession and i have vista for my home computer. yes the first few months were dodgy but it it stable on modern hardware. yes it is a resource pig but hardware is cheap so throw what you need at it.

i here the linux arguements. i do have a micro kernel running as a VM under vista. so there you go i can whip up some gcc compiled apps and run them on my vista desktop.

where we work we have no vista, and yes we just bought another 800 XP machines ...

i have yet to find an application or media file i could not deal with on vista.

my only gripe is that i can't issue a self signed certificate for an application to be registered.

Plug a VFat drive into it and watch it fail by spades. ;)

Sweet stuff! I'm surprised that XP Professional is still around, as far as installation goes. Anyway, from my days working as a tech support consultant, Vista was a nightmare for me. Finding controls is such a complicated process, but doable. Vista is such a rip-off of Apple's OS X Tiger and Leopard.

I also like the price.
