Can any Orb fans help a fella out?

I know there's a couple of Orb heads who frequent this place, and was wondering if any might have some certain bootlegs.

Basically I was looking around my Orb stuff and looking on Youtube, to suggest some recommended listening for bonoshed (tho I never did manage it Sorry dude), and I was reminded of my frustration at the loss of my Soundcity 95 boot.

I'm really looking for the soundcity gig broadcast by radio1, on soulseek and all, I can only find the first broadcasr, of OOBE and 2 other tracks, and can't find the second one with Oxbow Lakes, Plateau and Towers of Dub, all with crazy live band accompaniment.

Anyone have it? Or any other audios or even videos from the "live band" tours? On p2p, all I ever find are Ultrworld era gigs, millions of em.

Me old bonce is a bit muddled when it comes to The Orb though.I still never got to the bottom of if they ever really did a collaboration with Thomas Dolby of all people.I'm sure i went mental avin it large in some woods at a Little Green Planet party in Sussex in the summer of 2003 to a track that had a sample repeating "Mr Pocalypse , nooowwww!!! ". At the time remember thinking oh this is that one off Pomme Fritz, i'll have to check it out when i get back home/to normality.When we got home there was of course no such track on said album :scratchhead: . I remember going to see them in 94/95 in The Point in Dublin, on the coach down the drugs were being sold, and everyone who'd not seen them before was like "three of those, 6 of them and a big bag of the other please"....but all the people who'd seen them in Bangor in 92 were politely declining.

Most of my mates were spannered and said after that the orb were shit....cos they only played 20 mins, when in fact they'd been on 2.5 hours Weirdest thing was during Assassin, they blacked out everywhere, and pointed all the clever lights at the single orb over the stage, it just hung there like a solid balls of light, and I suddenly had a thought, turning round I saw that every single eye in the building was GLUED to that orb.

Claim to fame.....got The Orb stoned in Dublin a few years ago.

BTW, the new album, "The Dream", is superb - best stuff I've heard from them for a while, including collaborations with Tim Bran (Dreadzone), Youth, Andy Hughes, and Steve Hillage (on 3 tracks) - very dubby, and you can tell the Dreadzone influences on there.

I'm thinking of going to Amsterdam to see 'em in March (they've provisionally got a live date - only one mentioned thus far on their Myspace/website - in Amsterdam on Friday 28th March) - could be fun! :)

Not heard album yet, must seek it out forthwith.

Basically any of the stuff with the live bass and drums is brilliant. But that soundcity gig was outstanding, Oxbow lakes (what an ASTOUNDINGLY clever tune that is) with a big slidey Wobblesque bassline runing through it, Plateau with proper drums and Towers turns into purest thrash metal at the end.

Chatted with Andy in Belfast for a good while, and we spent half the night gassing shite with Simon the rumbleplankist outside the Ambassador in Dublin (when he lamented his lack of weed, and I donated my last bit of greenery to his imense joy)

The LX Paterson and Steve Hillage tribute to John Peel from Madia Vale studios is worth a listen :)

just go and buy "adventures beyond the ultraworld" and "u.f.orb", for starters, worth having in any collection. boggled my mind throught the 90s, along with various chemicals

Ha ha they were a very confusing band to be into.

I absolutely loved them but could never get my head around what they were doing. I saw them live at the Academy and was horribly confused by it all. I had a row with my mate about whether they were, in fact, Leftfield. As you do. We were out of our nuts, holding on to things to stop falling over. Being utter plebs, and out of our heads, we'd expected a three hour chilled-out twiddle through Blue Room and an early night. We thought we were being a bit wayward by turning up in a state; we expected everyone else to be drinking herbal tea and sitting down like hippies. Oh, and brilliantly we turned up as the doors opened in order to beat the rush. That's how come six of us were rolling around the Academy during the soundcheck (which was BASTARD loud - the bass could physically move you). We thought the gig had started so we were dancing around and really getting into it. We weren't particularly surprised that no one else had bothered to turn up.

Three hours later the place was rammed full of NUTTERS, all completely out of their heads and bouncing up and down to a full-in rock gig. There were people on stilts, dressed as aliens passing out lollipops and juggling, fire eaters on the stage. It was the loudest, sweatiest gig I've been to and, despite our general befuddlement, one of the best nights out of my life.

More Orb befuddlement from watching the video that they released. I only remember a dolphin flying through space, closely pursued by yes, you've guessed it, Battersea Power Station. I lost that video years ago, would love to see it again. It was released with a cd of the soundtrack. I might still have that somewhere.

There's a brilliant version of Perpetual Dawn with a film soundtrack(?) underneath. A teenage kid is up in court for possession then the judge dismissed the case after having a toot on a joint.

Searched for it a few times over the years with no success but i've just thought maybe it was never put to vynyl and is just a track i've heard at one of their gigs.As Colin said , things are often confusing with The Orb.

Funnily enough, I was at that gig!

Ha ha just called my mate who was at that Orb gig and he remembered something else. When we were waiting for them to come on he heard a noise behind him and said 'that must be the band arriving - they've come on their motorbikes'. A couple of us got involved in a conversation about the Orb arriving at motorbikes, quite impressed by this fact and looking behind us to see if we could see them. Then our mate Paddy pointed out that the band had actually been on for half an hour already.

I can't begin to tell of the weirdness that has occurred in Paterson's presence over the years. It really IS a case of"See the Orb and die" (probably shortly afterwards).

I've only ever heard one noise on a par with their subsonic soundsystems, and that was Hooky's bass using the entire Manc Apollo as an extended speaker cabinet. Remember wearing tracky bottoms at a gig once and during Blue Room, looking down to see them billowing in the bass.

Notes from a man with a few terrabytes to his credit:

The progress in azureus or Utorrent (isn't it actually MU torrent? the U actually being a greek mu, no?) is, I fear, non linear. In other words it may grab a little bit from the start, then the next bit you get is from half way through,then a bit from somewhere else, etc etc. You can (in azureus at least) prioritise the first and last sections to enable you to preview the download (.avi files have their time index at the end and wont play right (or often at all) without it).

With regards to tuning for download speed.....set your upload to about 20k to start with, then basically tweak it until you find the point where it doesn't choke the inbound (when someone sends you a bit of data, they wait to hear your machine say "yup, got it", if your outbound connection is too busy, this receipt is delayed, so the other end waits before sending you any more). If Utorrent has a stats page, you basically want to set your outbound limit to the highest value (or a k or two less), that still gives a flat trace on the outgoing graph....if it starts jumping up and down, it's choking.

Of course the above assumes a quite active torrent, where the capacity is available to give your connection something to think about. On a torrent with low numbers of peers, you're in the lap of the fairies, but although it is hard to use such a torrent for tuning, it'll feel the benefits if you've already sorted things.

One other note re: azureus....do NOT set the incomming limiter to anything other than the "dead 8" ( ), I've discovered that the only thing it limits is the speed stuff is written to disc......in other words, if you have something running at 200KBps, and you throttle it in azurues to say 20KBps, it will actually still download at 200, but only write 20 a sec into the actual file, if you then lift the limiter again, it syncs it all up again. This is odd enough when you have 1 or 4 GB of RAM, where it can buffer till it's tits turn blue, but if you only have 128MB, Terrible Things will happen quite quickly.

BTW..... And as long as you do not download "another pathetic pile of shite for illiterate, inbread, seppo spastics", or $POPTARD's new album, the various organisations dedicated to making the whole world obey US "law", will leave you alone.....the do not care that I have downloaded the soundtrack to Joe 90, or the old William Woollard series "secret war". BUT, for extra safety, if your torrent proggy offeres it, switch on "safe peer". It collects a list of known pig filth and Govt IP addresses, and if any of those try to open a connection to you, they are told "fuck right off foreign cop!". Most handy.

It would appear that my 8 is well and truly dead. When you click on 'details', it says that the information is not available. So perhaps the host's pc is turned off, or perhaps he's not sharing any more (the link is 8 ('alive' 8 at that) months old.

I've left the thing turned on today, just in case it's starts getting shared again. I've also left my email running, changed the incoming message alert sound to a very loud woman's scream, turned my speakers to 11 and will be emailing myself at regular intervals during the time that my cleaner should be in. On the subject of that sharing site, there doesn't seem to be very much available until you remove the adult filter. Then there's loads of videos from that charity for poor women who can't afford clothes. Perhaps I'm not searching right. Will probably play with it again tonight.

I've got that torrent running and there's a seed on now, I'll stay on it 24/7 (non windows users can do that), so you cannhop on and off and I'll always have whatever you missed, tho my upload is a little pish.

Pirate bay has everything. I got Cloverfield there as well as the new Orb, after seeing both discussed here, but since both are worthy I'll buy em anyways...well when movie comes out. Thebox.bz has everything UK (so nice not to have to trawl through pages of US shows when you're after something for the literate), you may need an invite, I think I have ONE left if you want it. Best bit about thebox is you can buy ratio if seeding is too hard or you desperately need a real ratio wrecker (like me just downloading 7 series of Grand Designs). Just shows torrenteers are not all freeloaders, the makes could have had that money if they weren't livin in the 1840's.

A seed is someone with the entire file, a peer is someone like you with some of it. Torrents work by distributing the demand, so if there are 50 seeds, you'll get a different wee bit from each, also, peers exchange bits each other don't have....bit like football stickers. Seeding is leaving a finished torrent open to share.

Things will work better if you have the right ports open on your firewall (you're more or less on your own there but most torrent sites have instructions that even Digi and other AOLers could understand).

Having a torrent running just means it's downloading, or seeding, or both.

Nero smart suite or whatever the fuck it's called usually does DVD's OK with no messing. If the files are in a fucked format, you can convert with AVS videotools.

Finished downloading a film this morning but then when i went to play the thing it was one of those winrar fcukers that you have to "extract" the 20 files or something and then muddle around in the dark without a clue.Somehow i got the bastard playing though.Wonders never and all that.

Johnny, I usually don't download rarred media files, avi, mp3, mpeg all of those are "lossy" compression, and rar is "lossless", if you compress a file that's already lossy with lossless compression, you will never ever make it smaller, in fact it usually swells a bit. People usually do it to hide fakes (they say they do it to avoid traffic sniffers, but they can all look into rars anyway). Winrar is the dog's anyway, beats the shit out of winzip, especially at opening multiparters.

(rars are OK on usenet as they make a convenient splitter with error correction built in).

I had summat similar happen when I joined 'em. Think you only need to get your ratio up to 1.0 so it shouldn't take long.

Incidentally, I downloaded New Order Story from them yesterday. Not sure why, not like I haven't got it, and not like I'm gonna watch it ... but it's easily the most popular thing out of everything I've got seeded! Has got the highest upload rates by far. Was quite surprised by that!

Normal for a medium speed machine of 1-1.5GHz yes. It isn't just burning it, it has to transcode it too, ie read the avi or wharever into raw mpeg, then re-encode that to the DVD standard.

PS, Col, just leave it running in the torrent proggy when the download finishes, it'll seed automatically, ideally you wanna seed until the ratio is at least 1:1

Normal for a medium speed machine of 1-1.5GHz yes. It isn't just burning it, it has to transcode it too, ie read the avi or wharever into raw mpeg, then re-encode that to the DVD standard.

I had similar stories of downloading and then BURNING issues last week.Then my PC was corrupted by JESSE JAMES file and i ended up deleting EVERYTHING i downloaded via AZUSsomething!But i had several films that played ok after burning to DVD-again aprox 2 hours.....and that was after i had used another program to CONVERT.But COL-this is ALL very exciting. I nearly started watching series 5 of the Wire y'know! As it was listed as just'The Wire' and I dowloaded it before 1,2,3 and 4.. So natch, I thought it was series 1,until I realised it was only 5 episodes and smelled a rat.Presumably i would have had my head up my shitter,trying to work out what was going on,joining in at that late stage.. Well they'll have to get up earlier than that to pull the wool over BRF's eyes I reckon..

I don't actually own an iPOD or Zen or anything like that So transferring the films to those kind of things and watching them on the move ain't an option for me at present.

Not sure if i remember that but i recall a Quatermass episode - think it was in a second series in the late 70s rather than the original 60s series- where there was scenes in an overgrown long decayed Wembley Stadium.That idea was kind of copied in 28 Weeks Later when the girl and the boy have to get to the New Wembley , which is shown as now overgrowing, to catch the helicopter ride out of Britain

Well it's over. I was watching Control but it was bringing back too many memories so I took it off and I am now marvelling at the retro twangerry of the Orb's Adventures in Ultraworld, which I have finally managed to convert to DVD. It's been a long journey and I can't say it's been easy. However, what doesn't kill you will make you stonger and I think I am a better man for the experience. Delighted as I am, it wouldn't be right for me to let this occasion pass without relecting on the journey I have taken to this point in my life and to thank the following people, whithout whom I would not have acheived so much in so little time.

Firstly, Johnny and Doctor?, for providing the technical support without which I wouldn't have even started on my quest, and for their encouragement without which I would have given up.

Secondly, Nick and the other posters on this thread, whose reminicences kept me going through the dark times. Without this support I would surely have given up on several occasions.

Scottish Hydroelectric have provided the many gigawatts of power that have allowed me to leave my computer on 24/7 whilst this was downloading. Similar thanks to my ISP, for the many terrabytes of bandwidth they continue to provide. Thanks guys.

Doc! , delving into my attic tonight , inspired by watching Portishead on Later and motivated to track down their first 2 albums on cassette ,one of which i found (Dummy), the other no luck so far ,i found my old Orb cassettes.I have Radio 1 Bristol Sound City 1995 , Glastonbury 1993 and a Radio 1 session from 1998.PM me an adress and i'll send some copies over to yers.Also found a cassette of Orbital at Alexandra Palace NYE 1996/97 and even a one of Chemical Brothers, Conemelt and Daft Punk at Tribal Gathering 1996.

Listening to Orb at Bristol Sound City 95 now.First track ' O.O.B.E' has that same African chant sample that New Order used on Angel Dust

Nah i don't appear to have Plateau, Oxbow Lakes or Towers of Dub, Doc .I have basically O.O.B.E and various ambient doodlings and pissing about and another track form Orbus Terrarum which could be either Occidental , White River Junction or Montagne D'or.Can't remember which is which of those tracks and can't check by playing my CD of Orbus Terrarum because it's knackered amd will no longer play.When were the other tracks from Bristol transmitted then? You need a USB cassette deck, tempted to get one myself. Think svp.co.uk have them.

Funny, the soundcity gig was broadcast in two halves, the second half was the one I got first, and now it's the one that nobody has. I have other versions of plateau and all, but they went MENTAL that night, and just rocked out with the live bass and drums.

Eg, plateau is normally a long pointless noodle with bugger all drums, but that night they played it like a fuckin Rhumba track or something.

I'm sad now:(
