Can any Orb fans help a fella out?

I know there's a couple of Orb heads who frequent this place, and was wondering if any might have some certain bootlegs.

Basically I was looking around my Orb stuff and looking on Youtube, to suggest some recommended listening for bonoshed (tho I never did manage it Sorry dude), and I was reminded of my frustration at the loss of my Soundcity 95 boot.

I'm really looking for the soundcity gig broadcast by radio1, on soulseek and all, I can only find the first broadcasr, of OOBE and 2 other tracks, and can't find the second one with Oxbow Lakes, Plateau and Towers of Dub, all with crazy live band accompaniment.

Anyone have it? Or any other audios or even videos from the "live band" tours? On p2p, all I ever find are Ultrworld era gigs, millions of em.

I do have a Radio 1 broadcast of The Orb at Glastonbury 93 for definite because i vividly recall listening to it many a time whith that healing / gospel doctor shpeal at the start and then going into The Valley

Me old bonce is a bit muddled when it comes to The Orb though.I still never got to the bottom of if they ever really did a collaboration with Thomas Dolby of all people.I'm sure i went mental avin it large in some woods at a Little Green Planet party in Sussex in the summer of 2003 to a track that had a sample repeating "Mr Pocalypse , nooowwww!!! ". At the time remember thinking oh this is that one off Pomme Fritz, i'll have to check it out when i get back home/to normality.When we got home there was of course no such track on said album :scratchhead: . I remember going to see them in 94/95 in The Point in Dublin, on the coach down the drugs were being sold, and everyone who'd not seen them before was like "three of those, 6 of them and a big bag of the other please"....but all the people who'd seen them in Bangor in 92 were politely declining.

Most of my mates were spannered and said after that the orb were shit....cos they only played 20 mins, when in fact they'd been on 2.5 hours Weirdest thing was during Assassin, they blacked out everywhere, and pointed all the clever lights at the single orb over the stage, it just hung there like a solid balls of light, and I suddenly had a thought, turning round I saw that every single eye in the building was GLUED to that orb.

Claim to fame.....got The Orb stoned in Dublin a few years ago.

wheh hey i might not have hallucinated it after all then and may one day find it.Had a great night seeing them at Kentish Town Forum in 95. They came on well late by which time i'd lost my brother and mate only to find them after The Orb had finished when they came up to me and impatiently asked when the fuck are The Orb coming on?

Hmmm, I've got a LOT of Orb stuff (including several bootlegs) - will have to search through them - can't remember what I've got, but will have a dig around.

BTW, the new album, "The Dream", is superb - best stuff I've heard from them for a while, including collaborations with Tim Bran (Dreadzone), Youth, Andy Hughes, and Steve Hillage (on 3 tracks) - very dubby, and you can tell the Dreadzone influences on there.

I'm thinking of going to Amsterdam to see 'em in March (they've provisionally got a live date - only one mentioned thus far on their Myspace/website - in Amsterdam on Friday 28th March) - could be fun! :)

Not heard album yet, must seek it out forthwith.

Basically any of the stuff with the live bass and drums is brilliant. But that soundcity gig was outstanding, Oxbow lakes (what an ASTOUNDINGLY clever tune that is) with a big slidey Wobblesque bassline runing through it, Plateau with proper drums and Towers turns into purest thrash metal at the end.

Chatted with Andy in Belfast for a good while, and we spent half the night gassing shite with Simon the rumbleplankist outside the Ambassador in Dublin (when he lamented his lack of weed, and I donated my last bit of greenery to his imense joy)

The LX Paterson and Steve Hillage tribute to John Peel from Madia Vale studios is worth a listen :)

just go and buy "adventures beyond the ultraworld" and "u.f.orb", for starters, worth having in any collection. boggled my mind throught the 90s, along with various chemicals

Ha ha they were a very confusing band to be into.

I absolutely loved them but could never get my head around what they were doing. I saw them live at the Academy and was horribly confused by it all. I had a row with my mate about whether they were, in fact, Leftfield. As you do. We were out of our nuts, holding on to things to stop falling over. Being utter plebs, and out of our heads, we'd expected a three hour chilled-out twiddle through Blue Room and an early night. We thought we were being a bit wayward by turning up in a state; we expected everyone else to be drinking herbal tea and sitting down like hippies. Oh, and brilliantly we turned up as the doors opened in order to beat the rush. That's how come six of us were rolling around the Academy during the soundcheck (which was BASTARD loud - the bass could physically move you). We thought the gig had started so we were dancing around and really getting into it. We weren't particularly surprised that no one else had bothered to turn up.

Three hours later the place was rammed full of NUTTERS, all completely out of their heads and bouncing up and down to a full-in rock gig. There were people on stilts, dressed as aliens passing out lollipops and juggling, fire eaters on the stage. It was the loudest, sweatiest gig I've been to and, despite our general befuddlement, one of the best nights out of my life.

More Orb befuddlement from watching the video that they released. I only remember a dolphin flying through space, closely pursued by yes, you've guessed it, Battersea Power Station. I lost that video years ago, would love to see it again. It was released with a cd of the soundtrack. I might still have that somewhere.

There's a brilliant version of Perpetual Dawn with a film soundtrack(?) underneath. A teenage kid is up in court for possession then the judge dismissed the case after having a toot on a joint.

I have the Ultraworld video you mention , Colin.Maybe able to help you out with a copy if you really want to see it again.Can do a VHS to VHS copy .Not got the hang of transferring to DVD and all that malarkey yet.PM me your postal adress if you want a copy

Yes , it's taken me years but i'm finally starting to get the hang of them.Downloaded a couple of films recently .Can't find a torrent for the Orb video but if Cambo can't recommend one i'll send you a copy of the VHS

I'm looking forward to that. I've been using my mind to think about it a bit and I've managed to remember that the video was, in fact, a video of a gig. Beneath the overlaid graphics and stuff you can just about make out a gig crowd jumping around. And the music was live.

Is it called colours and shapes? That became our standard phrase for describing nights like that. Everything went strange, I could only work out colours and shapes.

Searched for it a few times over the years with no success but i've just thought maybe it was never put to vynyl and is just a track i've heard at one of their gigs.As Colin said , things are often confusing with The Orb.

yeh it's a gig they did at Brixton Academy in 1991 overlaid with visuals.Patterns And Textures it's called.Hey it may even be the Brixton gig you were at!

Funnily enough, I was at that gig!

Ha ha just called my mate who was at that Orb gig and he remembered something else. When we were waiting for them to come on he heard a noise behind him and said 'that must be the band arriving - they've come on their motorbikes'. A couple of us got involved in a conversation about the Orb arriving at motorbikes, quite impressed by this fact and looking behind us to see if we could see them. Then our mate Paddy pointed out that the band had actually been on for half an hour already.

My claim to fame is that I was having a piss at a Paul Okenfold night in the Academy. Again, I was somewhat the worse for wear. I looked at the bloke standing next to me, which must have been quite an ordeal for him, and said something like 'great night, eh'. This guy smiled and agreed. 'Okey is the man, eh?' I opined and he nodded in agreement but informed me that he'd not started yet, but that the guy DJing now was every bit as good. Oh, I said, what time is Okey on then. 'Just as soon as I've finished having this piss' said Okey (for it was him). Sure enough, as soon as he'd finished his piss he was out the door, up to the stage and started DJing.

He was wrong though, he pissed all over the other guy (see what I did there?)

He had a part in it, sure - Alex playing Rainbow Music during one of his DJ sessions, made Hillage go up to the DJ booth - led to a long-working collaboration between the pair (he guests on 3 of the tracks on the new album - you really should try and track it down, Mike)! :)

Oh yeah, and Alex is DJ'ing at the forthcoming System 7 gig in London too!

I can't begin to tell of the weirdness that has occurred in Paterson's presence over the years. It really IS a case of"See the Orb and die" (probably shortly afterwards).

I've only ever heard one noise on a par with their subsonic soundsystems, and that was Hooky's bass using the entire Manc Apollo as an extended speaker cabinet. Remember wearing tracky bottoms at a gig once and during Blue Room, looking down to see them billowing in the bass.

8 hours til it finishes downloading? Yeah i usually leave it over night.Although a certain film i'm trying to download on utorrent had an initial ETA of erm , 5 weeks and 2 days! Bit faster now and only another 20 hours to go. I could do with a lesson or two on this utorrent caper.My broaband internet connection is 2MB which probably doesn't help in speeding things along

It's gone to 5% and then stopped and the ETA is 'forever'. I guess that means that whoever has it on their PC isn't logged on. The selfish twat. Can I press a button and find out where he lives? I could go round and hurt him a bit.

Of course, I could be doing it all wrong. I haven't a clue what I am doing. I'll leave the PC on for a couple of days. I'll probably get home from work and the flat will be full of pirates and viruses and stuff.

It will probably take me another infinity to work out how to burn the DVD. Hopefully I'll still have the same taste in music by the time it's all done.

Still, not like I had much else on this weekend. What a lazy b'stard I've been. I only left the house for a quick walk and locked myself out! Had to get a cab all the way to my mate's house 'cos he's got a spare key. Cost me 20 bastard quid.

Oh right yeah .I knwo what you mean now by dead 8.Have had that a few times recently.You could probably play the thing now on yer PC or laptop without worrying about the last 5% .That last 5% would prob be the very end of the credits at the end of the Ultraworld video.Try stopping it and open up the containing folder .
