Anyone been to Jamaica?

I want to visit Jamaica, but I don't know much about it. One thing: I don't want to stay at posh hotels with TV sets, garden views and bathrooms. And that's the only ones I can book online, it seems. Is there anything cheaper?

What I want is to just walk along streets, some clubbing, beaches maybe, and that's it. Not a family-type trip. Any advice?

Keep your wallet well hidden, don't take a load of cash with you and never say 'Yes' to a suggestion from one of the locals that you buy anything.

Don't trust the hotel safes - use a bank or cashpoint.

Don't buy drinks on the beach - take your own with you.

And don't, whatever you do, use the old 'Jamaica' joke...

Most holidays to Jamaica are to be found in gated compounds. This is to stop the locals from killing you for the price of a tin of Red Stripe.

Last year Jamaica was alledged to have been one of the most violent countrys in the world.

I went to Ocho Rios.

Spent too few hours to really say, but our tour guide made is visit some pot plants

That was indeed funny.

Sure thing is... if you go there, pay to see the damned falls, don't to the other place... I've never seen so many people trying to sell you junk under pressure.

There's one born every minute...."to hell with those damn tourist hordes!! I'm off to find the 'real'Jamaica. Perhaps this nice man will show me to the nearest 'Dancehall Queen' contest where I can drink rum and be at one with my carribean cousins"...Totally. Irie. Mon.

Not quite that. I'm all for typical holiday stuff, but I'm very short of funds, hence my desire to minimize costs. If I'd have $2000, I'd stay at a nice hotel on the beach. That's why I don't want it to be a family trip - another mouth to feed, while I can last just on a few cookies a day. :\ohwell:

ask a travel agent about any low key islands where you can just hang out in a boring hotel without being too cliched touristy, and do you own thing.

I've never been to Jamaica, but it does sound hard to just wing it without knowing what you are doing, as well as kind of dangerous, plus cheaper packages there will probably rip you off.
