Situation arose recently with Rover; Labour weren't interested in buying it, cos it would never make a profit. At least Northern Rock has a load of residual value.

Multi-billion pound industries sucking the life out of the economy, with huge wages, and constant striking wanting more. Government isnt a charity in the end.

I think the government have had enough trouble running themselves over the last thirty years rather than running things that actually matter.

Its the job of the industries to make themselves succesful. People pay taxes for public services, Health, law and order, international security blah blah blah. If an industry isnt sucessful (i.e. Northern Rock) then it shouldnt be up to the tax payer to proper it up. You cant have the government (and by proxy, the taxpayer) subsidising the unsuccesful (or uncompetetitive) industries. Its not economically viable.
You could argue that the mortgae industry is "essential industry." Hell, you dont (and wont) see the government offering 90% self cert unlimited mortagages ever. You also didnt see the government propping up the company i was made redundant from recently...

I actually grew up near you in S.Yorks. It is sad that the pits have closed along with the dock yards. But just like industries and businesses all over Britain ,if its not earning money or you can get it cheaper elsewhere you will do. Supermarkets and internet shopping is putting thousands of local shops out of business, the fact is the world changes and sometimes its cruel.
