She was a lousy Prime Minister, presiding over a hateful period in British history. Most of what she did was influenced by her own self-advancement or vengeance against groups that she felt animosity towards. Groups like 'working men' or 'sick people' or 'the elderly'. Her government pillaged the country of it's wealth, decimated the Health Service, education system, public services and just about anything else that was any good. She managed this during a period of global prosperity, when most other countries' economy were recovering following the various crises of the 70s. Trough her promotion of the politics of hate and negativity she also changed the political agenda of this country, paving the way for the spin-riddled culture of today and destroying any forum for serious political debate in or out of government. She sold all of the public utilities and the rail network and wasted all the money. She changed our relationship with the US, degrading our status from valuable ally to subservient. She was in it for herself and her friends and everyone paid the price. And we're still paying. She lost the right to be thought of in human terms many years ago.

The woman is as close to evil as we've been unlucky enough to experience in the UK.
Many people here aren't old enough to remember the atrocities she committed and the results of both her Home and Foreign policies on the British people and others, still being felt today.
The surge in racist sentiment, the systemmatic destruction of the NHS, the tearing apart of the Nationalised Industries to be sold off to the private sector to companies that had her cronies on their Boards Of Directors, the decimation of communities, the upsurge in homeless families, the huge rise in the suicide rate, Council/social housing being sold off to people who couldn't really afford them, in the full knowledge that they could be repossessed and sold off to the highest bidder for business development, etc.
it is true that the country needed to get into modern times and industries and to some extent she did aided that,but The way she neglected the north was like starving one son to fatten up the other greedy son.i will never forget her stubborn,harsh,even evil attitude.she thought she was the bloody queen.

Thatcher wasn't evil,unlike Mugabe of Zimbabwe. We have the right and freedom to vote for who is Prime Minister. And she won 3 elections, so she must have done something right.
While I agree with much of the Thatcher hatred, I do think much of the bad stuff was a necessary evil, and someone had to do it. Dont think British Coal had made a profit since 1973, and you cant keep on chucking good money after bad. Lets face it, country was in a right old state in 1979. I read somewhere recently that inflation was at 19%!
Thought Cols points were interesting; I reckon Blair was equally and more so responsible for e.g. Britain being subservient to USA in terms of foreign policy. I thought Thatcher actually allowed us to have a policy again; all US presidents were scared of her, at the time. Also re:spin; thought that was far more a product of Blair.
By behaving so recklessly, she became the first leading politician to succeed even though she was universally hated. This lead to a loss of respect for our leaders which I believe led to the advent of the era of spin doctors.
And as for winning elections, this was largely due to negative campaigning and the scandalous manipulation of the Boundaries Commission. The Falklands War played a big part in her second win too: an avoidable conflict that was deemed necessary in order to boost her flagging support at home.
It was under Thatcher that the arms race went into overdrive and she was largely responsible for that. Opening the country to the US bases redefined the special relationship, reducing us to a country which is expected to put US interests first at all times. I can't recall a single time that Thatcher stood up to the US or even stood up for our interests globally.
In many ways sounds like you are describing politics in the United States in the last couple decades
They were the last group of principled politicians this country has seen. They couldn't beat the Tories because they expected voters to vote for them because they weren't the Tories.

Yes you can. It's the job of a responsible government to subsidise the essential industries, if that's what's required to keep them strong. Look at the mess we're in with our energy deficit now. Look how much our industries are paying for foreign steel. Look at the massive numbers of unemployed. Look at the shift in skills and the types of 'industry' that this country still have to be proud of.

On the other hand, what I will remember of her is this : At an European meeting in Brussels, she was complaining about something, mainly aimed at France. Chirac (Torry), Prime Minister of Mitterand (Labour), said the following, without knowing that the microphones were still on : "Qu'est-ce qu'elle veut cette vieille ? Que je lui serve mes couilles sur un plateau en argent ?" "What does this old woman want ? Does she want me to serve her my marbles on a silver plate ?" I think that most of the people who had to deal with her thought this at some point.
But I prefer to stop here. I am just realising that we've got at the moment someone even more dangerous at the head of our state. A mix of Thatcher, Blair, W, Putin and Berlusconi... with a pinch of Heider...
