These both came on successively on the iPod and I wondered to myself, which shaped music more, which one still sounds fresh, and overall which was better.... I was stuck...

Although I like and dislike tracks from both, for me, Pink Floyd had a more varied career and produced some very interesting ideas, from 'Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun' to 'Comfortably Numb'. I enjoyed 'The Wall' as a film and a 
'concept album' as well. Sad what happened to them from the releases of 'Permanent Lapse Of Talent' and Waters' 'Pros & Cons of Being Boring'.
Led Zeppelin only stick out in my mind for a couple of songs.
'Immigrant Song' is still one I occasionally listen to, though 'Stairway To Heaven' sounds so much better when performed by the Great Man Himself - Rolf Harris. 
Never really liked Zepplin, Ive got a greatest hits cd but I never play it. Floyd on the other hand, I have several of their albums and obviously Dark side of the moon & the wall are massive albums and really do stand up to the test of time. Zepplin I think are one trick ponies, whereas the Floyd really did push the boundaries of music (and sound).
Both were two of my favorite bands when i was like 15. Don't really listen to them anymore, but I am much more fond of Led Zeppelin over the years.
Led Zeppelin seems timeless to me, if obviously of their time. Great rock production (i love the production on Physical Grafitti) AND great playing, dozens and dozens of excellent tracks across their records... even the filler/excesses on albums are hella cool and knowledgable.
Pink Floyd seems more like a product of production to me, hit or miss, lots of wankery. Many classic tracks but seem to ring somewhat superficial to me over time. Looking back since 1980, Roger Waters seemed like a pretentious winey douchbag (Reznor did it a little better maybe) and David Gilmour seems like an overrated whore, willingly turned the band into a brand name product, despicable. Dark Side of the Moon most overrated album ever, I like the Syd Barrett era better.
The FLOYD! definitely. Not because we perform Floyd songs every Weds night but ever since BBC televised them at Earls Court with a BBC 2 simultaneous broadcast (well before stereo TV,NICAM or HD) so I went out and bought DIVISION BELL and have liked them ever since.
I went to see Floyd at Earl's Court. I did walk out 3/4 of the way through because they were so boring 
Zeppelin were always a great rock n roll band who came into their element live. From Led Zeppelin I up to In Through the Out Door, they never put a foot wrong.
Floyd could never be called rock n roll. Their middle class background led to them intellectualising everything. DSOTM, WYWH and The Wall are IMHO the only real Floyd albums worth owning and which stand up to repeated listening. Was never a fan of the Barrett era stuff and their catalouge from this period up to DSOTM is full of half baked ideas that probably sounded great with half a bong in them. Should have called it a day after The Wall. The Final Cut is a Waters solo album in all but name and the Gilmour led Floyd turned into a caricature, especially with the Division Bell's lyrics being attacks on Waters.
From bootlegs and live videos, the Floyd didn't appear to be a stunning live band as reported by the aging hippies in the press. If you like musos who use elaborate set decorations every once in a while, then you'd like the Floyd.

Never liked the pretentious artness of Pink Floyd, so... - LedZep, but only because they stick to r'n'r. Actually I like only one LedZep song and that is 'Rock'n'Roll'. They all wore long hair, c'mon Edel, what are you on??? Just wear your Led Zeppelin t-shir quietly :dead:
Easily Floyd - not cos I think they're necessarily 'better' but I genuinely don't know much about the Zep.
Think it's just a cultural thing - lads I grew up with would sit around listening to Floyd, but I don't know any Zep fans at all. In fact, off the top of my head, I think I could only actually name about three Zep tracks! I've just never really had any exposure to them. 
Floyd, can't be arsed with Zeplin, there's respect, and admiration and all, just fuck all desire to hear very much of it.
And I much prefer idoitic Syd-Floyd, to the later "dire straits for dopeheads" version.
Oddly people keep comparing floyd to the Orb (hence the excellent pisstake above, I always thought), but I reckon there is a fundamental difference.
Floyd, can make the nicest, fluffiest, hapiest music, chill you to the very marrow of your bones. The Orb can make ANY sound reassuring and happy, even when it IS terrifying. Floyd have scared me pissliess when hammered. The most frightened theOrb have made me, was genuinely believing the venue was about to collapse on a few occasions (stone cold sober too).
Zeplin, to get back on topic (for a change), produce no emotions in me at all, beyond the hairs on the back of my neck standing up and my hand fidgeting looking for the samlper's capture key when I hear them foookin HOOOOOOJ drums.

Beyond the back end guitar solo of'Stairway to Heaven'(which is absolutely wonderful...or 'awesome' if you happen to be a tosser ) I find Zep to be largely a bag of wank.
Floyd do it for me,with songs like 'Us and Them' and Comfortably Numb,natch.
I have to agree with Chris, the definitive version of Stairway to Heaven is by Rofl. If only Rolf would cover Shine on you Crazy Diamond :)
I too initially wasn't turned on by Zepplin, but the more I listen to it, the more it really grows on me. They changed music quite substantially.
Floyd has always been one of my favorites, but other than the Wall, thier albums tend to have alot of crappy filler songs of wank inbetween totally magnificant and spectacular songs. They too changed music substantially.
Still can't make a decision on the better of the two... thoug I think I lean more towards Floyd...
Have you got How The West Was Won? A fantastic live album, and Zeppelin at their peak.
