Best Sat Nav?

Anyone of you ever ended up stuck on a railwayline or the edge of a cliff from one? Can you get commercial ones? - i.e. they take into account the size and/or height of your vehicle?

Which is the best buy?

Don't know about the settings bit, but I have only ever used Tomtom. So does pretty much everyone I know. Personally I find them really easy to use, if you miss a turn, they recalculate instantly, unlike some which I believe just keep telling you to turn round and go the way they wanted.

Anything that popular is always going to be a winner in terms of the support and updates that will be available. Id consider that before going for one of the lesser known makes.

It's funny, but 3-4 years ago, only the flashiest cars had satnav and I used to drive into central London 2/3 times a week without it. Yet nowadays, if my satnav broke on the way into London or any other big city when I didnt know where I was going, i'd happily pull into the nearest Halfords and replace it before going near the place.

Used one for the first time yesterday in the works car.It was a TomTom.Helped immensely.I guess if it told you do go down a route where there was a bridge or whatever that i couldn't fit under in the van and i turned round and went another way it would automatically tell me another route anyhows.Cheers

Best thing in these circumstances would be to navigate to another village or town on the map that gets you past the obstacle, then re-selecting the original destination. If you just turned round and headed off in another direction, it might still direct you back to the obstacle.

I don't know if there's anything in this, but mine seems to 'remember' routes I take in spite of its advice and routes me along them the next time. No good if you go to different places every day though

Probably don't have it in the UK, but GM has OnStar here. Friend had it and it was pretty cool. You press a button and talk to a live person through the speakers. They then direct you where you want to go, giving you directions you can easily understand (like 'on the right there is a gas station type' directions). If you got lost the person would help you through it. Was pretty cool.
