... another 3 points :nonono:

A momentary lapse of concentration this morning and I've been done by a speed camera. I'm annoyed with myself though as it's on the main road I use every day and I know it's there!

Maybe there was no film in the camera...

You simply can't pick and choose which laws you obey and which you disobey.

Slowing down for the speed cameras is still breaking the law.

You rely on the law to keep you safe and protect your possessions. Why would you break the law when it does so much for you?

I hope this is a lesson to you and you respect and obey the law of the land in future.

FYI I had been doing a steady 30 but slowed down to let somebody out, for some reason I sped up a little too much. I wasn't intentionally speeding! I think I was only just over, but enough to set the bloody thing off.

I don't know why they did away with the guy who walked in front of the cars waving a red flag.

If you were only doing 10% more then you can't be prosecuted. I think the cameras flash anyway just to scare you. Any more than that and, technically, you could get done. In reality, you'll be unlucky if they're set so low.

Where's Steve? He can tell us how it works.

He might be able to pull a favour for you as well ;o)

The Party (no longer calling it the government, I'm just going to admit we live in Airstrip One), CONSTANTLY say that "speed kills".

This is patently not true......

Richard Hammond: catastroppic vehicle failure at 300mph, still alive and well. Lucianne Burti (with help from E. Irvine) into a wall head on at 170+mph Spa Francorchamps 2001, minor brain bruising.

Robert Kubica: head on into a wall in Canada last year at 180mph, no injury whatsoever.

As you can see, speed does NOT in fact kill. The pathetic construction of road vehicles is what kills!

My solution, all road cars to withstand the same safety tests as race and rally machines, we'll reduce road deaths by 99% (might be a bit of a rise in pedestrian deaths, but then I'd also ban cars from the centre of every town, so that would work out.

BTW many cameras these days are digital, and do not therefor run out of film. But they did prove on top gear that at 180mph+ the camera can't see you.

Completly agree there. Southern Calif has a nice group of people called illegal Mexicans, these people have no clue how to drive, the laws or the etiquette... they love to get in the fastlane of the freeway (70 mph speed limit) and they'll go 50... freaking idiots cause more traffic and accidents than any group of people I know...

Lucky ones. Here it is 5%.

Well, it depends... Heavy traffic, 5%. Regular traffic 10%. Free roads, almost 15%. I just wonder how the camera knows if the traffic is heavy or not.

In Montpellier, on la voie rapide ("speed way"), a camera flashes you at 51 km/h. A percentage under 1% ? I am so bad in mathematic(s).

On urban motorway - Montpellier, speed limit is 110 km/h. Two cameras and I think they do not flash under 130 km/h. In fact I never saw them flash. I was once between 115 and 120 and someone on my left was driving much faster than me. It did not flash. Thank Sarkozy. Before being elected Président, he was Minsiter of Home Office. He is the one who sowed cameras all over the country. He made a lot of money with it... So, now, people are scared.

Then, driving on a motorway looks like that : Mister average Frenchman driving his anonymous Renault, Peugeot or Citroën that he will pay at least during 10 years is so afraid to have a fine that he slows down to 110 km/h, so 20 under the limit. You have to brake 1 km before the camera, at least. On the other hand, you have the lucky ones, driving a luxurious British car, a powerful German one or a nervous Italian one - almost paid cash, who push you because they are in hurry. And if the camera flashes, they do not care because they know someone in their "networks" to get rid of the fine. And when you are someone between these two categories of drivers, you are surely part of the local best drivers or a foreigner.

Germans almost respect the speed limits. So do the British and Dutch. Spaniards drive like fools because speed limit is only 120 by them. By us, they drive at 140 - they do not care about fines. Italians drive faster. They have a 150 speed limit at home, so they drive at 150 everywhere. The fast and furious are the ones from Switzerland. They drive on French motorways like they were in Germany...

The important question surely is, how many points does Jem have left? :evil4:

Anyway I recently found a number plate. Now I just need another one and my next high speed interstate trip will be safe. My car after all is designed to zoom down the Autobahn.

10% is fine but down in the good state of Victoria they have a 2% discretion, i e none as that is less than average speedo error rate.

I got my first points recently, for doing 34 in a 30. Jem got hers, she said, for doing 59 in a 30. Same points, same fine.

If you are close to the limit, Jem, I know a network of people that take your points at £100 a point.

I have always believed that all speedos are a little bit tight around the bollox...You feel me?

Sorry I've been watching The Wire..

No really,I've always believed that when speedos say you are doing 30mph you are actually doing 25 or 26mph..because someone told me so,ages ago..So I tend to drive at about 34 in a 30 zone..

You know those warnings that flash'slow down' when you are over the limit, but don't nab you for speeding? Well they seem to back this up aswell..Cos it's not till I do say 46 in this 40 zone near me that it flashes..Could be summat to do with the 10% allowance though??? Any experts in the G,that can clear this one up about speedos and what not?

I got 3 points (and a fucking huge fine) for failing to identify the driver.... the speed the car was allegedly clocked at would have been enough to get me banned or 6 points, so it was the lesser of 2 evils, especially when you have to drive loads for work. It's 6 points for doing it now though, think too many people did what I did.

Blah blah what a knob.

Nobody would give a fuck if it was only the driver and even the dumb passengers that were at risk from speeding motorists.

The last F1 death I recall was the marshal that was hit by the tyre.

Other motorists and the pedestrians are the victims that matter. Speed does play a major part in their chances of survival.

India driving is just absolutely terrifying. Speed limits are interpreted as a rough guide, all manner of vehicles will cross your path and from any apparent direction, might is right (unless its a cow) and your spine or your suspension will be shattered minutes within leaving the airport. Worse even than this is the ritual for overtaking whereby oncoming traffic will always lurch out on to the opposite lane and expect you yourself to slow down or drive on to the grass. All this and yet you will be lucky if you ever exceed 40 mph.

I do however like the carefree approach to driving in other countries though. We have become absurdly over protective in the UK

Last time I was speeding was in a Mercedes convertible doing 120mph up the M6... I was speeding off my nuts until the driver braked suddenly and I spilled it all over my lap

Actually, for pedestrians, the only difference in the reults of being walloped at 40 and 140 are how eaily scraped off the road you are.

No, of course speed has a part in terms of reaction time and so on, I'm just being "at it" as usual. Besides, in "my" world, I'd keep cars and people apart much more, and impose completely facist speed limits in residential areas. motorways would be fair game much as the autobahn's are, and the public transport system would actually work so that cars would be used only for fun and access to awkward places. There would be NO conceivable reason, in my world, to drive from London to Manchester (stop that at the back!, is that you Torr? see me after!) One would drive one's electric town car to the station (or indeed book the use of a public one, like a self drive taxi), to the euston maglev terminal and 25 mins later step off at Manc Picadilly, where you could obtain another town car for your local business.

This vision of the future has been brought to you by boredom, and the need to test my wireless connection (it failed).

Sorry, this is probably only reported in the free world. When you fly to the US, all your details (shortly to include your credit card details) are sent to US "intelligence", and are recorded on a big register of foreign "terrorist risks", this is the same list which holds kiddie fiddlers, according to TheRegister.co.uk.

yes, your name gets put on a list (the PATRIOT act and all that. but that's a different story.....) still, it's hardly the same as being on the sex offender list!
