James - Hey Ma

I've just bought their new album, early indications are that it's a good one.

I'm going watching them on Tuesday. If anybody else is going, I would recommend buying this, there are about 9 songs from their new album in the setlist.

I didn't even know they had a new album out till i saw it last week in the shop.

Was considering investing, but was worried about being disappointed so didn't bother.

Its like every other James album.

If Tim Booth wasnt on it, it'd be great.

It's on my list of things to get. James-fucking love em...not so much the newer stuff though.Fingers crossed it's a return to form.

I should give this a few more listens, we're off to see them on Friday.

Just can't see the point though - it sounds just like someone's turned the handle on the James LP machine. All very worthy and passionate and soaring and that, but we heard it on Hymn From a Village and we've been hearing it ever since. At least Laid had some new ideas: what happened to them.

Still can't wait for the gig, of course.

Aberdeen last night. Can't think of much good to say about it, I was really disappointed. A proper mailed-in performance from the whole band. The face is familiar, but the eyes give it all away. None of them seemed remotely interested in playing, there was none of the spark of old and none of that old feeling that something different might happen. They did play a lot of new stuff, which the band seemed to struggle to get into. Saul looked particularly disappointed to be up there, Tim slagged off the venue and, at one point, told everyone to shut up. Andy Diagram looked like Gossamer Beynon in his flowery dress and there's not much else to report.

The feeling of spontaneity that you used to get just wasn't there and there seemed to be none of the enthusiasm either.

If they think that's worth £33 they're taking the piss. The one high point was the crowd taking over at the end of Sometimes and repeating the chorus for a few minutes, a gesture that said nothing about the performance of the band. Most of the band responded by whipping out cameraphones and recording the scene. Hopefully they will study the performance and remind themselves what the old euphoria felt like and do what they need to do to recapture it.

Derrick May, on the other hand, was brilliant.
