I'm building an Excel spereadsheet just now.

I've got a figure, 2242 (X). I want to know what figure minus 10% would give me exactly that net figure (Y).

It's the same formula for adding VAT back onto a Net figure but I cannae remember it.

Can anyone help?

yeah, its MATH...

..can't get the equation right if you can't speak it right:wink:

You want to know which price, less 10% leads to the number you have? The number you have is therefor 90% of the total figure, simply divi by 9 and multiply by 10.

Or multiply by 10/9

Yeah, and dont forget to call it Math next time. :skeptic:

In general you reverse the calculation. You reverse multiplication by dividing the result by the same number.

So if a £10 item is 10 x 1.175 = £11.75 with VAT

The pre-vat price is 11.75 / 1.175 = £10

I've decided that Math refers to calculations performed using one number, which is why the seppos say it, their sums are easier ;)

Yeah my limited maths ability had that covered. I was refering to the formula that works out a gross (inc VAT) figure from it's net (ex VAT) figure.

Say the Ex Vat figure is 48.24. What's the gross figure?

You get me?

Thats a remarkably insightful analysis.

Three men are in a hot-air balloon. Soon, they find themselves lost in a canyon. One of the three men says, "I've got an idea. We can call for help in this canyon and the echo will carry our voices far." So he leans over the basket and yells out, "Helllloooooo! Where are we?" They hear the echo several times. Fifteen minutes later, they hear this echoing voice: "Helllloooooo! You're lost!" One of the men says, "That must have been a mathematician." Puzzled, one of the other men asks, "Why do you say that?" "For three reasons. One, he took a long time to answer; two, he was absolutely correct, and three, his answer was absolutely useless."

The version I like has the men shouting at a man below 'where are we' the man replies 'you're about a hundred feet in the air, beneath a bag of warmed air' the man in the baloon shouts 'you're an engineer, aren't you' the man below shouts 'I certainly am, how can you tell' 'because your answer, although correct, is fucking useless and doesn't help us to solve our problem at all' 'you're all project managers, aren't you' 'yes how can you tell' 'because you've spent a load of money and got yourself in the shit and now you're blaming the engineer'

Sorry, I meant the other way round. How would you work out the net figure from the gross. How would you get from £56.88 down to £48.24. You divide it by a number in the high 60's and then multiply it by summat else. I just can't remember the formula!

Divide by 1.175

That's closer to the way I heard it.

I've also read, but cannot be arsed googling for, a version where the balloon crew, based on the information from the ground, successfully deduce that they are above a certain well known corporate headquarters near Seattle.

Well all those versions have shit to do with this thread, so we'll stick with mine:read:

exactly

1 divided by 3 multiplied by 3, rarely comes up as 1 on a PC.

well of course not, you have roundings & it's far more accurate

but then you just write your answer down to a set no of decimal places, hey presto, 1 again.

or use fractions

What do maths lecturers do when they're constipated?

Work it out with a pencil.
