DVD-R, help needed!

I bought this fat expensive software to make copies of movie DVDs, but this fucker doesn't get "protected" regular movies.. What's the point in that, ah?

So I've never done it before, how can I overcome it? Any advice welcomed

So you are trying to copy copy-protected dvds without the necessary software.

Of course your "official" software will not do that. There are various ways of doing this, but I've never actually attempted this.

There are plenty of people who have that knowledge. Whether or not they want to tell you how on a public website is another matter.

What's the point in copying a movie though? Does anyone really watch them more than once anyway?

Never had TOO much luck ripping movies in Dos-XP. DVDx seemed to work.

If you look on demonoid or pirate bay for "dvd aio" you'll be fine.

DVD speaks for itself "aio" is short for "all in one". What that means is the someone has gathered up all the leading DVD ripping tools and bunged them on a single CD image that will autostart and offer you all the tools.

The reason they are a good option is that not everyone can get every program to work. What works for me may choke on your machine, and vice versa.

BTW, although I would normally say that paying for utility software is always a con,[1] since you have in fact given these jerks money, you may as well try to get the shit working.

Things you may need to do.... Possibly update the atapi control libraries on your machine (quick google will tell you if you need to and how to do it if so, it's a download and double click job like). Atapi is the control system used to run CD and DVD drives (it's also possibly the bit that handles the scsi emulation....although all DVD and CD drives these days are IDE or SATA, neither interface allow "low level" command of the drive....like "move your arm here, laser power set at 0.37, now......." which you need for burning, therefor they use SCSI emulation. Linux is up front about it, but you'd never know windows did it too, if you weren't a big geek like me).

Other thing worth trying is to play the disc using powerdvd or whatever you normally use to play them. Sometime the ripping software cannot get the DVD key files until a "legitimate" program has requested them to unlock the disc. Once you play it for a min or two, stop it and try the ripper.

[1] eg, Norton Ghost/acronis trueimage. Wonderful backup proggies, cost a bloody fortune though. Yet all they do is (as I would type it at a unix console).... cat /dev/hda1 | gzip >saveass.img.gz one HD backed up. And most defrag software is literally a bitmap skin for the default Windows Defragger.

There's also this software called DVD shrink, that will take off the copy protection.

Doc, a friend of mine gave me DVDx sometime back (but have yet to use it). He stated that downloading it now it won't write ptoected dvds... however there is a grandfather date (2001?) that if you set your computer at to let the software think it is that date when you download it, it will copy the dvd... not sure if its true as I have yet to try the software out....

Think he needs a newer version or something, sounds like the proggy itself rather than anything to do with DVD that I know of.

Been many years since I used dvdx, strictly a DVDrip boy now, or if feeling adventurous I piss about with playing the DVD into all manner of encoders by hand using linux's media player, which has the bonus of you knowing that since the media player can play the file properly, if the outut sucks, it's your encoder options which are bollox.

Dvdx was far from easy to use (weird time range selection system, and generally a little flakey)and there MUST be better tools out there now, but back before I trained the penguin to do this stuff, it was the only windows prog that didn't make a complete pig's lunch of it.

Slysoft.com, combination of anydvd & clone dvd does the trick for me and you can try before you buy.

FWIW, Daemontools can mount the disc image so you can play it off HD.
