You may recall I named my windows machine "Fac9000". Well it's a whole new machine now, and I've pretty much tuned the bollox off it, and while I've had it running at 3.8GHz (this is not bad for a 2.4GHz CPU), it was flakey as fuck. After over a week of blasting it with cpu wrecking software and watching temps and voltages, I have found the speed at which each next MHz you squeeze out of it starts to cost too much in voltage and heat (I want it to be fast, but not a wreck in 6 months).

3.44GHz. Big Deal, Why tell?

3.44Ghz, is a Front Side Bus speed (the main, God-Clock, for those of you not possessed of the geek gene)

Sinc I got this Gigabyte GA-X48T-DQ6 motherboard in it I'm starting to think it may be heading towards self awareness, done some pretty odd things. The previous Asus board was bonkers, and unpredictable, and unfriendly, so I returned it to the shop....and fucked the CPU socket while doing it, hence dead warrantee and a 2nd motherboard purchase. (I still can't believe that the first component I ever damaged (apart from anything that may have happened while installing AMD heatsinks with a "wanker clip".), while building a PC, was also the most expensive I ever bought (actually, I think my video card cost £300, so 2ND most expensive).

Funny thing is I'm in no mood for games at the minute, or for getting it all kitted out for Cubase (My M-Audio Delta has shit itself, but I still have an Ozone I can use), so basically I only start it to fuck about with the overclocking. Then I cook the CPU for a while with a stress tester, watch it cook on temp/voltage graphs and then shut down again. It's not JUST cos I'm an obsessive geek twat, but also the thermal interface compound (CPU grease as some call it), Arctic Silver 5, needs up to 200 hours worth of heat cycles from idle to full power and then to shut down before it works at full efficiency. Once it's bedded in, I hope to fuck I feel like some games or Cubase, or I've got a £1400 ornament. HAL9000 is chugging along, UNDERclocked to 2.4 (just testing 2.6 at the min), undervolted and seriously frosty. It's basically last year's attempt at a long lasting super-PC[1], placed into "retirement trim", slower and colder and life is easy for it (all the more so for running Linux which doesn't piss around with it all day).

And little Orac, the Dell Inspiron from which I type this, is same old same old.....almost useless in the pre-installed XP, but quite frisky in Linux.

[1] at the time I didn't know that AMD were not going to go much beyond the 2.8GHz of my 5600+, in fact 3 or 3.2 was as far as they went, not worth the upgrade. I also didn't know that their quad cores would need new motherboards, and that they'd only work on my motherboard in a crippled form. So my "keeper" became a dead ender.

Happens all the time. Quad-Core is cool but I am waiting for code to catch up and really use all 4 cores. Same with components. quad chips need a new motherboard. It also probably needs all sorts of new what's-it to "integrate" the system and get the speed boost, blah blah, we crave.

tho 3.44 GH.z through a FASB? I thought "HOLY $%$%^%!!!" The fastest I have seen in the commercial arena is 1066 Mhz!!

Run FSB that fast gts me concerned how stable the platform is-Grenade anyone??

The FSB (for Ram and Northbridge etc) is 383x4 and the CPU speed is 383x9.

And yes, the main difference from Dual Core to Quad core is that you have 3 cores doing fuck all instead of 1. Does finally add some multitasking ability to windows though which is nice.
