for those who are using Firefox 2, Firefox 3 is now out, fully fledged release, but I have noticed a few bugs on it Firefox 3

Whats the difference between this and IE7?

no, but firefox does, ff3 has it inbuilt

Firefox 2 did as well. I've been using it for ages and I think it's great.

I first downloaded it I found that IE7, shipped with my Vista laptop, didn't support my company's webmail application and I've used it ever since.

Funny how the Firefox spellchecker doesn't contain the words Firefox or spellchecker. Or webmail

(note, experienced photoshop users will HATE it because the interface is different, I do not blame them for this, I'm fucking useless with Logic Audio, and CakeWalk.....if it aint cubase, I'm all at sea)

It's available for DOS-XP and DOS-Vista too though, so that those less fortunate than you and I can also use it.

How are you finding Ubuntu BTW, I liked the look of it, but it gave me grief trying to install mplayer, so I did a sulking reboot and haven't been back (it's on the same PC as Gentoo, and a clapped out old windows install).

Tried Beryl/Compiz yet?

been fine so far, though installation was hell on earth, then it was the fact I am using a hyperthreading cpu for it, it wasnt using it by default...another configuration....another problem solved, only to be irritated by another problem, it wouldnt shut down properly, well got that sorted out, and so far so good, all is swell, though I want to learn abit more in the terminal command list, just to used to windows though

I am using Firefox 3 and I am stunned at how fast it renders web pages!! I have always liked the clean interface and FF3's UI is simple as can be. FF is also much more stable than IE will ever be.

I have both FF3 and IE7 on my computer. Their UIs are quite similar tho different. I almost always use FF3 but the occasional site, usually banking sites etc. are IE only.

IE7 is so integrated into the Windows OS if most normal folks tried to remove it, Baby Windows would throw a meltdown fit similar to my 18 month old niece-Not Pretty.

FF3 it has different things from IE7, like addon themes extra addons, both has its strenghts and weaknesses, but I use both for different reasons

Strange you say that, because all the "specialists" I know say to use Firefox to visit banks sites.

I don't visit my bank, my credit card, or my computer bits pusher in windows at all. And I always type the URL by hand. Means that I'm really only open to DNS spoofing as an actack vector.

Mine has been closing down a bit with 'unexpected failure' messages. Never had this before. The messages are always very polite though, so I'm not too offended.

Come to think of it, my Vista laptop has been acting a little strange recently. It's been taking longer to turn on in the mornings and sometimes it's mind seems to be on something else. It's probably just hanging around with me so much.

I'll think about re-installing everything, perhaps.

I rather like FF3 so far, but as usual, my fave theme and extension don't work with the new version yet.

The theme I can live without, but I am missing my RSS ticker for live feeds at the bottom, I find that to be a much handier way to check out the latest news.

The developer of that extension reports that it works with 3, and a commenter on his page has praised him as well, but I received the 'incompatibility' message when I tried to install it. I'll be checking out the help forums tomorrow to pinpoint the problem.

I just had a simillar report from someone else, using a machine I built them with me own hands.....P4 2.4 (hyprthreaded one), 1GB DDR2 Ram, Asus motherboard (SiS chipset one I think), running Windows Indego Core Extreme (everyone should use this as their next XP install, it rocks (for windows natch).)

Any common components? I bet it's the HT processor. It's been a lamb for me on my quad core. Opera on the other hand, has got issues for me in windows.

Actually, I was thinking more of the HT CPU.

It's a single core unit, but Intel figured it could still do certain calculations on the "down" part of the CPU cycle, while the main registers etc are resetting, so it shows as a dual core. Confused the piss out of me at first.

I've got a gigabyte board at the mo, and after the Asus one I killed, it's like my new best friend.

(something is badly wrong at Asus Towers, they've gone from rock solid boards with brilliant Bios's backed up by first rate tech support.....to flogging wobbly hardware (alledgedly they put "solid state" labels on cheap shite capacitors!! and all) running gibbering BIOS's, and their tech supp is now "yeah, fuck you dude!".....it'll be a while before I buy another one. Especially since the Striker II Extreme cost me £300. It went nuts and while I was packing it for a slow boat to China RMA....I fucked up and bent two pins in the LGA775 flat....waranty void, board fucked).

My M2N32WSpro, that runs as the heart of the Linux box, was a real joy. It's a 680 I think. But, the 790i on the striker II extreme was a nightmare, really really hot, and had gaping FSB holes, making overclocking a major pain in the arse...... I had to run the machine at 430x8 because anything between 350 and 410 was just a total no-boot, so using a 9x multi was basically a no go. Really liked it's ability to specify memory speed by hand instead of just a few multiplier values. But, the crash-free bios is disappeared from their boards, so has dual-bios....hence mine ended up fscked....when a successful BIOS flash mind wiped it. And honestly, their tech support's turned to shit in about the last 12 months by all accounts. The most disturbing thing is this accusation, made I think by Abit, or Gigabyte, that their "solid state capacitors", are actually cheap Chinese wax caps, with expensive Japanese Solid state cap labels on them....shocking and would explain a few of the odd things I experienced. It's not the kind of thing you can say about a competitor without having evidence, lawyers will eat you alive.

Dunno, maybe it's just the 790i chipset that stinks. I've used Asus exclusively since 2003 (previous board was an ECS K7 board, which cost £20, was universally regarded as total shite, and ran flawlessly for over 4 years 24/7....and then died just slowly enough to give me a chance to replace it (capacitors fail, swell, and burst on them))...and to be honest I think that's why I've taken the horrid SIIE so badly....it's like a dog you had from when it was a pup, that suddenly savages your hand.

The Gigabyte has been a revelation, CPU clocks higher (fuck, I got it to bench through 3dmark Vantage at 3.75GHz....not bad on air cooling on a 2.4GHz chip....and it runs prime stable at 3.5....but a teeny bit too hot for me).

Gigabyte X48t-DQ6 Intell Q6600 (G0) @ 3.44Ghz BFG 8800GTX Oc2 (626/1000MHz) 2GB Corsair DDR3 1600 (arm, leg, kidney, hence only 2GB for now....I'll get the other 2 in 6 months when it's £20 a gig) OCZ 780W PSU (machine draws 410W with all 4 CPU cores and the GPU pinned to 100%). 2xHitachi 500GB Deskstars (the quietest drive I've ever not heard) Optiarc DVDrw M-audio ozone (but onboard sound for games).

My other box has the Asus M2n,and an Asus cooler, and an Asus videocard....all fabulous.

Next upgrade for me is a Gigantic screen (really torn between monitor and tv....tv=shit res, but monitor=having to run games at it's max res (cos LCD's look cack at anything but "native" res), which is 2600x something= molten GPU. OR I may buy one of the new ATI 4870 video cards. My last ATI card gave me fuck all but ulcers and sleepless nights, but these things are getting 90% the performance of the new NV GTX280's.....but cost less than half was much (you can actually buy a crossfire bundle for about 30quid less than a single 280....basically, you'd need to be a total NV fanboy not to look at them. Besides, I'm building a box for a cow-orker this week using a 4850, so I'llbe able to find out if they're painful.

Anyway, so much for my theory that hyperthreading is the cause of FF3 woes.

its going good so far, the tv card was naff under xp and 32bit vista, before sp1

it is having its flaky moments with the webcam, not being able to install properly, perhaps six months down the line, I will probably re-install x64 from scratch to see if that solves it. if not, just stick to the free open source ones on the 'net

Must say, Vista64 is quite good for gaming....still truly tragic for general use, but games do look nice in DX10.
