Catherine Tate in Dr Who

Wouldn't qualify myself as a fan of the show, per se, but do find it immensely watchable. When there's nowt on regular TV it's nice to know it's replayable on Virginmedia.

I know there's certainly a few here though who are serious Who-heads.

Catherine Tate. She's just really shit in this, isn't she?

I mean, what is she supposed to be there for? Comedic value? Every line she says just sounds like one of her character creations. And she feels the need to shout everything of importance, rather than act.

This weekend's episode just showed up the series' current failings. No Dr Who, but a whole episode centred around Miss Tate instead. And it was dire. Not even Billy Piper could rescue it.

And, whilst we're on the subject, what the fcuk has Billy done to her face? She can't be hitting the botox already? Every line utterred came via her bottom lip. Everything from the bucked teeth up seemed to be frozen in stasis.

Still, least they had Alex Kingston in a coupla episodes. :food:

She's annoyed me a WHOLE lot less that I thought she would. But I've not warmed to her at all.

I think Freema's been the best companion so far (not counting SJS and her dog in their brief appearance)

Last episode was fine by me, however, it's the sort of sideways story that's probably best treated as an audioplay or novel. I'm not sure it's right for a mainstream who watching audience, indeed your comments somewhat attest to this.

There seemed a deliberate strategy, the previous episode (which I seem to be the only bugger who liked), was 100% Doctor, and Doctor's witts.

Still fuck all that. It's 'stermininatin' time!!!!!!! AND, we get absolutely every bugger in it, Rose, Martha, Donna, SJS(+dog?),Jack....Even fuckin Missy Jem's in it.[1SPOILER]

The second season of Torchwood's been a billion times better than the first. But I must, as a total fangeek, confess that I'm REALLY looking forward to Missy Gwen Cooper meeting the Doc (assuming it happens).

[1] and something that looks an awful lot like a "man" in a Dalek base "wheelchair". I'd like to see the old cunt again, but only if they don't depend on him in every single story, cos it makes the daleks into a bunch of stooges instead of the total cunts they ought to be.

Most of my enjoyment of Dr Who stems from the fact that it's something we can sit down and enjoy as a family.

I agree totally with Jarvo's comments about Tate - on more than one occasion I've added a 'BOVVERED!' to the end of her dialogue for her.

As for Billie, I think I read that she had problems 'remembering Rose's accent' which explains her facial contortions.

Still, as Steve says, the finale should be good - what with Dave Ross (creator of the Daleks, innit peeps) making a comeback...

I heartily reccomend "I Dave Ross" by Big Finish Productions.

Basically a life story from his teens until the moment when the first Mk ONE travel machine has it's occupant installed.

Terry Malloy is so good, it's like he's channeling Michael Wisher in his darker moments.

Supposedly they've got Ben Kingsley? (made a good Hood in that rape of Thunderbirds the Jesuslanders perpetrated)

Having said that, I've read elsewhere that it's not "Dave" at all.

Best episode this series for me. Never mind the low budget, that rarely stopped the old Who.

Tate was alright on Saturday but still not good enough as a drama actress. Bernard Cribbins outacted everyone else once again anyway.

Davros I'm looking forward to though. If they get his appearance as close to Genesis of the Daleks as possible everything should be alright.

Agreed on all counts.... should I be worried about that??

Yes Mrs M, you should be cackin them really;)

The link OB put up is broke, so I looked on the tube. Didn't have the guts to watch a spoiler, but I did find this.

But strong with the one bollocked bavarian at the start, but then Davros does make adolf look like a gentle caring soul.

I love the "destiny never happened" attitude of this montage. Wisher and Malloy are the only Davrae (Davri?).

I meant to say, the thing that REALLY annoys me about the current incarnation of the show is this Earth fixation. There's a whole fucking universe of time and space, and they keep basing stories on Earth. Yawn.

Want proper Dr....fly to planet, find problem, sort problem, leave....very often with Humans as the bad guys.

Only really been this season where they've had more than one off Earth ep.

Also, one to muse over......

One of the now deceased Cult of Skaro, was called Jast. Rose's ma was called..... Jacqualine Andrea Suzette Tyler

co-incidence?

there's always thematic strands across the series and this time the doctor has said on more than one occasion "nobody dies" and he's pulled characters back from being dead: his daughter, his wife(?) and so, I think that al's wish will be coming true inverting that strand he's going to find that he can't save everyone and who's going to be the one to die most noble-y?

new companion candidates please.... carey mulligan (sally sparrow) for me

Did you know Tennant's knocking off 'his daughter' in 'real-life'?!

And that she actually happens to be the 'real-life' daughter of a former doctor, Peter Davison!

And what the fcuk have I started with this thread!

So, if they have a child, then the kid will grow up knowing his dad is the Doctor, his mum is the Doctor’s daughter, his grandfather was also the Doctor and his grandmother, Sandra Dickinson, was Trillian.

I think the resulting child might just like sci-fi...

:smoking:

Peter Davidson married trillian?

(Oh well, I suppose Romana did marry Richard Dawkins)

I can't figure out why his daughter would regenerate, as far as has been mentioned in the series, books and plays, regeneration is not soley a genetic thing, but dependent upon large amounts of Artron energy, and she never even entered the TARDIS.

Pretty obvious set up for a spinoff wasn't it, the end of that episode. The Beeb need to calm down on the milking of Dr Who! Torchwood is good, but it having it's own analysis show (and TWO for Dr Who), is just fucking annoying. It would be less so if they weren't shown right after the show itself. Looks like The Apprentice has been blighted with this too.

Sally Sparrow? The chick from Blink? I liked her, she'd defo do.

There is something more going on with Donna, from things the Dr says, she's "important". I would not be surprised if she "dies" by being the actual solution to a problem, as if she were destined for it. I'd also not be surprised if she turns out to be a Dalek creation.

Isn't Martha meant to be back though? Not only was she the least annoying in the show's return, she beats every assistant (barring Ace...who I hated at the time, but, particularly through audioplays, I have come to adore), since Romana V2.0 stopped off in E-space to help the Tharills.

Still the highlight of the entire "new" who, HAS to be that septic givin his best Hollywood sepotard cheese speech to a Dalek.

"so, what do you say, Dalek?"

ROFLMFAO

Funny enough, after reading Al's post, I watched last week's again, and she BOVVERED me a great deal, I think that being reminded that she was in fact Catherine, not all THAT funny Tate coloured my view. She does do a fucking fabulous Belfast accent though, which seems to be a very hard one for Engerlanders to get right.

TWATTO: Sek mutated and got Exterminated, Jast and Thay also got the chop, leaving only Karn, who fucked off rather than accept the Dr's help.

I would not be surprised if it was he who looked "daddy" up. He would then use him to build a new Dalek race, and then exterminate him again, not really all THAT bright for an evil genius ;)

BTW, in that "I, Davros", he quotes a line in the ancient Dal[1] tounge which is something like (only heard, not read) "an lek uud cun da lek", which he translates as "and men shall become supermen", so Dalek means "superman", or more truthfully "Ubermensch".

[1] In the original "the daleks" the Thaals refer to a war between they and "the dal", who hid in their city and built suits of battle armour to live in, this is also mentioned in early comic strips. They rationalise this in cannon, by saying that Genesis is the truth, and that the Thaals were relying on a garbled verbal history. In I,Davros, it is explained that there were several races on Skaro, much like current Earth, and that all are "now" gone save the Kaled and Thaals. The Dal were one of the first to become extinct.

Sorry about the duff link Steve, it was working - and was just a very quick clip from last Saturday's Confidential showing a very shadowy Dave with Russell T Davis getting all gushy saying how "brilliant" it was to have an arch-enemy returning.

Anyway. it's old news now - BBC1 are showing a trailer now where you see a hand and hear his voice. It's also online HERE if you haven't seen it.

WOOOHOOOO!!!!!!

Cheers

(I don't really watch TV in between Dr and F1, so never see trailers).

Feel bad for watching it, I've religously avoided all spoliers for the entire new run of the show, even avoided the leak of "Rose" like it was a virus.

Why do people compain that Iplayer only works in IE in Windows? I'm watching using Opera in Linux. Pussies!

The general Whovian consensus seems to be 'she's nowhere near as bad as expected, in fact she's actually quite refreshing'.

Freema was a major let down; little more than a Billie clone wrapped in leather jackets that left everything to the imagination!

'midnight' was directed by alice troughton (daughter-in-law of the second doctor) and featured david troughton (her hubby, and paddy's son).

they're obviously giving little nods to the heritage.

i thought i was going to loathe catherine tate but actually i quite like her. i was getting sick - sick i tell you - of those simpering girlies gazing up at DT with doe eyes. he's MINE. well, mine and mrs m's. we're going to rotate him with the master. rrrrrrrrr.

See, I always preferred companions who were more on the Dr's wavelength, rather than the stupid apes. SO Rose and Donna are utterly inferior to Martha to me. And they're all fucktards measured against Romana.

Errrrrm Miss Nora.....there is only one true Master(and you will obey him), and Roger Delgado's been worm food for 30 years :(

ooooooh just the thought of the master (master no six/mister saxon - didya like that, cambo?) doing his 'you WILL obey me' line is really very knee-weakening indeed...

come on, you know that despite (because of?) the hamminess JS is worthy of the title, if only for the accurate usage of 'decimate'.

or did all the homoeroticism make you feel uncomfortable about your sexuality? HMMM?

She can't act though. I mean, I know it's not s'posed to be hi-brow but she is just a tad trite, isn't she? Calling her wooden would be offensive to trees.

Ditto that Freema berd too.

And Billy was pushing it.

Still, s'pose they're all better than that Torchwood lot. And nowhere near as hi-camp!

lordy, saturday's ep was a bit good, wasn't it?!

and dempsey was in it! and dickie dawkins!

loved rose doing her nose-out-of-joint bit. nice to see a snatch of the old rose tyler (oo-er) instead of the ripley-esque character all these ex-companions seem to turn into...

so who's the most faithful among them then? and is our dave's time really up?

(oooh, and was there any in-joke significance of SJS's reg, cambo? a little linger on that close up, i thought. like a big geek.)

I think "most faithful" implies SJS (or Jack). And Sarah is looking a bit dead based on where the ep ended.

I wondered about the number plate too, must look into it further.

I can't figure the re-generation thing......

Either........ A. The beeb have pulled a lightning speed fast one, and he really IS about to become someone else. All the stuff about Dave playing the Dr in the few specials next year could be bluff. or B. He's going to partially re-generate, back into himself (possibly because they are "out of sync" with real time).

Scared of this thread now, some wanker might post spoilage!

Nice to see Daleks still being proper wankers, even though Davros is about.

How many Daleks does it take to change a lightbulb.

None, a single Dalek is still an army and can exterminate conquer and destroy an entire planet with NO LIIIIIIIGHT!!!!!!!!!

There is a picture in the wife's Heat magazine this week of the Doctor wearing a blue suit, not the normal brown one.

In Tennants first Christmas Special he had his hand cut off and grew a new one. That hand, now in a jar in the Tardis, was featured a couple of times in the last episode, so maybe it's the hand that regenerates into a duplicate Doctor that can defeat Davros and live happily ever after with Rose. All one second in the future, natch.

i've heard this duplicate theory. what a load of bollocks if they do that. surely as a timelord with infinite access to other universes and that, he can't risk upsetting the spacetime continuum by having another doctor pottering about?

i thought that for about 5 seconds. makes appealing sense of a few things. can't be though. would make all that strokey-face business too creepy, quite apart from anything else.

and it's too recent. too neat and tidy. they've set that up for something longer term, i think. 'her' doctor was much older than dave, she said. (that made me think too - if she recognised him in this incarnation he can't be going anywhere for a while. unless she recognised his soul or summat. awwww.)

Aye,he's well thought of is Davros, for one whose eyes are moulded over. He always gets a bum rap for some reason. He does alot of good charity work behind the scenes..I'll wager beneath that chest beats a heart the size of a cabbage.

People don't know, but he helps all manner poorly Daleks with their extermination skills....

Last sighted knacker deep in K9,and although that robot dog was howling with delight,Davros never batted an eyelid...

I agree with miss Rebecca's assessment, a bit underwhelming, bit over busy, and ended with a whimper not a bang.

BTW Bx......you've not been writing for TheRegister have you,I note their "moderatrix" shares certain traits with you.

On a happy note, RTD's gone, and the guy in charge now wrote most of the best and "most Dr" scripts we've seen.

Yep, underwhelming. But I thought so about the past two finales so nothing new there. Hope RTD still contributes a small script or two to the series in 2010 as things like Midnight are what he does best.

Doctor? wrote: On a happy note, RTD's gone, and the guy in charge now wrote most of the best and "most Dr" scripts we've seen.

Partly disagree with you there, especially because Moffat's written two of the worst offenders in the new series' "must make the Doctor at least flirty and give him a love interest every now and then 'cos that'll keep fangirls interested" -mode: The Girl in the Fireplace and that library thing.

So yeah, I'm gutted that Tennant didn't regenerate into a grumpy oldish man like Troughton or McCoy, but then I'm one myself so there ye go.

I had a thin grasp of what was going on.Davros was trying to exterminate all reality or the whole universe or summat and was getting all excited.then there was 2 doctors and Catherine Tate also became half a doctor(i think :scratchead: ) then the daleks accused Davros of betraying them.oh fcuk knows, it was doin me head watching it this morning with a hangover. What's the point in them all rushing around trying to save each other when everbody always regenerates/comes back to life later on anyway.load of tosh

Definitely one of the sweeter moments in the entire episode. I think I almost cried when he also said, just moments before that, "He needs you, that's very me."

i feel strangely unsatisfied. did anyone else think there was just too much going on? it all felt a bit like an over-excitable 7 year old's story: "and then THIS happens, and then THIS happens, and then THIS happens..."

Remember David Morrissey as 'Billy' in One Summer? Right handy lanky cunt who looks after his mates type of gadgie,he played..One of the good guys:nod: I mention 'One Summer' as this cheeky lass, one of my proper mates,is passing my dvd of 'One summer' all over the gaff,to people I don't know and it mildly narks me...It's compareable to losing your precious vhs, gold dust porno, back in the pre-tinternet day....Obviously nowhere near as bad as losing track of ye vhs porno, but still...

You have to be of a certain age, with a half decent memory and possibly?!male,to relate to any of that, cos it's all so unimaginably disposable now innit, porn?

ONE SUMMER! That was ace ,first thing I ever saw Morrissey in.Can't remember much of it now apart them in Wales feeding birds Mars Bars, his mate going back to Liverpool and getting involved in joyriding, and James Hazeldene turning out to be a paedo. Ah bugger, can I borrow it next Boaty?:evil4:

For you Monty, anything! I still remember at Blackpool you were dying to turn into your cot,in that B&B Jemma trashed, and stole for the team and everything...it was something like daft o'clock, and you were spinning my disc and making positive comments on my pot-pouri of cherry picked tracks..Correct me if I'm wrong, but you digged Moonelight Shadow?? Noooo that was Leggy:nod: who intimated it was risque, socially, for whatever reason.

We were all barred anyhow. Which I thought was a bit rash.

it's not just girls! boys can be eversokeen on wanting what they can't have.

i'm certainly not interested in that crap. unrequited pining is for sixth formers. grown up relationships are imperfect and real and reciprocal.

i'll take bluey. far rather have the fella who sticks around than the idealised unattainable fantasy.

there was a tiny trailer for the crimbo episode straight after 'journey's end'. he won't be the next doctor, he'll just be in that ep.

now, i'd take him over two tennants and a simm put together. my big sister and i get all confused and conflicted over the fact we have these massive crushes based on him being a brash lovely proper northern gent, when the truth is he's a big bloody luvvie married to esther freud.

I totally get the blue choice.. but my view was if you had been in love with a bastard for ages and suddenly he turned around and was all lovely and attentive you would think.. hang on a minute.. you aint the tosser I adore.. and get bored VERY quickly..

Mr M is a mix of the two which makes him a kinda murky green..
