More ITunes Help needed

Go into My Documents, then My Music, then I Tunes, then I Tunes music, and copy and paste to the external drive.
I presume you'll be moving it into an i tunes folder on another computer, so just open it up and drag it into the i tunes folder there.
you can indeed do it fairly easily. once done make sure to set your defauilt library location to the new place (edit, preferences, advanced)

It depends on what you mean by your library...
is it your mp3 collection? Then yes. Go into edit, preferences, advanced... and you'll see a box where you can choose the drive where all your music is located (stored when burn a cd in iTunes), and there is always the option to drag and drop the files in iTunes and it will automatically accept them.
However, if you are talking about the iTunes library file itself, then no. Unfortunately it has to be in the My Documents in the C drive. You can copy and paste it into a another folder, then copy and paste it on another computers 'My Documents' -or- open iTunes from the library itself (where ever you saved it) and it will work, but in order to save changes it has to be in My Documents.
You can, however, change the location of "My Documents" to another drive (which is what I do anyway - goes to the external one).

How did you do that? I tried numerous things, and asked on all sorts of forums to find a solution, as I would prefer the iTunes Library file in the external... by default iTunes uses C drive, and unless there is something either new or I am unaware of, there is no way of changing this default.

It's the "My Documents" folder itself you move - right-click "My Documents", select "Properties", and then click "Move". KB Article from MS here.
In fact, thinking about it, I've got my iTunes to point to another drive altogether... I'll come back to you if I find out how I did that! :)
If you're feeling brave, you can follow this article... I'm sure that I didn't do that (especially the bit about deleting the ITL file and editing the XML file) , but possibly something similar when I first installed iTunes?

I don't know if this system would work the same on a PC but with my home mac I've set up the library on an external drive so that different 'users'/'accounts' can access the same library and any additions or playlists are up-to-date. anyway, I did that by moving the library file "iTunes Library" from the iTunes folder in Music to the external drive. trashing the original file. creating an alias of "iTunes Library" and moving that to the old folder making sure it had the exact name it had previously. so effectively, when the application is opened and it looks for the library file in the host folder it is then re-routed to the external drive. obviously, it's important that the external drive is fired up and running or iTunes will give you an error and not open. I've found moving my mp3/aac files to a separate drive problematic. the files can be moved between folders on the original drive and the library will continue to find them but move them across drives and all the links in iTunes are lost and the files will need to be re-found or re-added and playlists re-built. when I've had a hard-drive 'go down' and it's been replaced - I've been able to save a lot of the links in itunes from back-ups if the folder hierarchy is kept the same and the drive is named exactly as before. although, it would actually be easier to do the whole lot from scratch once all the files are on the external drive. and with external drives being so cheap now. it's very practical to keep a back up too.
hmmm... I think you guys are on to something, but that then means I need to have my external always plugged into the computer right? I have an external made from a laptop harddrive, so it is powered by the usb... prefer to unplug it when not in use, to save on electricity.... so once the My Doc is moved does the external need to always be on?

In that case (if you don't want the external drive to be on all the time), then it's probably not advisable moving the "My Documents" folder to it (Windows stores all sorts of things there, and unless you tweak each and every program that use it...!)...
However, moving the contents following the Apple KB article linked above should be fine, ensuring that you power up the laptop harddrive before you start iTunes! :)

All my music is already on the harddrive... wanted that blasted library file to be there as well... oh well.
by the way, if you turn on iTunes without the external plugged in, no fears. Close it, plug in the harddrive and reopen and all will be fine.
my itunes has lost the links to the songs. don't want to lost the playcounts & ratings (again)
is there an easy way to get it to remember where all the songs are on a pc? (know there is an applescript to do this on a mac)
Did you move yor files after they were entered in iTunes? What happened that makes them not able to find the songs? As long as they are still where they were when you added them to iTunes, don't see why it can't find them...
when you click on a song it has a location normally, now it does not. it has lost the links to the files.

Unless your files were moved, or you opened iTunes with the external disconnected, I don't see why it can't find them. In my four years with an iPod this has never happened to me. Have you saved past iTunes Library files? If you move an old file into the My Doc area, does it find the songs then? Maybe the Library file is corrupt?
itunes was opened without the external conneceted, but i've done that before, it just changes the location to the c drive & when i've changed it back in the past there were no problems.
Not to insult yer intellegence here, but I do this on accasion. Did you close iTunes, plug in your external, then reopen it and all should be fine...
i had too with no probs til now 
wouldn't recommend it in case it happens to you
found it mentioned on a forum where they fixed it with an applescript.
readded the n's & the a's now, about another 7000 songs to go...
