How fast is your broadband?!

I think Japan is the fastest. I was told that we just go through regular phone lines, whereas over there thye have laid down broadband lines. I have no idea on the speed though.

Someone was looking into piping it in over the national grid. Bandwiths would be fucking massive then.

But the idea was abandoned because it would be virtually imporrible to charge for it. Everyone would get the same connectivity unless massive infrastructure changes were made. Or something.

It will all be wire-free soon, surely. My Orange dongle costs £15 a month and the speeds are respectable. No doubt this will improve with time.

Been going to check my d/l speed for ages but never got round to it. Theres a link to a site somewhere on the gadget show website,mite have to have a gander before i go to work.

I've been with virgin media years they never lower their price just make their broadband/d/l speeds faster bastards!

Will be going wireless lappytoppy soon so mite have to change to another provider as the wire will be trailing all round my front room.

Have to say tho, virgin broadband service is excellent

Been with Virgin Media years (well, since it was NTL).Upgraded to 20MB a while back because there was laods of films i wanted to download .But once i'd caught up with everything i was after i found i wasn't using the 20MB enough each month to justify what i was paying for it (tight cunt eh?) So downgraded back down to 4MB although Virgin claim for the same price they'll be upping the speed to 10MB soon.

Whenever i did the speed test on one of those sites it was never 20MB though.It was 10MB at best on most occasions Still, each film did download in a couple of hours compared to the 15+ hours on 2MB.

Verizon FiOS has 50mbs in my area. It is from fiber optic cable that comes straight up to your house, then in the house coaxial cable is used.

I have absolutely no idea... I know we are with Virgin Media cos we got some cheap deal.. but apart from that I'm lost.. saying that I rarely download many big files so probably wouldn't notice if they switched me to dial up...

Only 2 Mbits, but it is always at that speed, and is truly unlimited.

Im still on dialup, but i have found that since everyone else moves over to Bband, i tend to get better bandwith on dialup now (i have often wondered if i am the only living soul restricted to the magic of dialup ) :)

Yes, that's what they told me - "within the next couple of months" - that was November!

Will soon be switching over to SKY broadband,free wireless router and only a tenner a month for the max package!

D/L speed depends on how far you live away from telephone exchange,i live less than half a mile from my exchange so in theory i should get excellent D/L speeds.

Anyone else got sky broadband?

Need to know the ins and outs before i switch.

You are indeed lucky you're able to get the 50 MB package...it's barely caught on in our area, and we're waiting to get the FiOS TV franchise agreement for all of New York state, it's going to royally fuck up Time Warner's shizznit. Be warned though, if you go for FiOS & you really value wireless, opt to get wired w/ Cat5 instead of coax, you can run your own router in place of the FiOS router. You don't know how many pissy morons call in who whine that the Actiontec (with it's mighty 4dB antenna) isn't even in the same league as a good ole Linksys 7dB dualie.

6.9mb Time Warner ... is that suppossed to be slow now? :( Now I feel bad. I remember 10 years ago and getting over 30k functional download was good.

When and at what point will you be able to download and watch fullscreen HQ HD video on your computer monitor as easy as watching youtube now?

Is Cat5 actually faster than coax? I didn't know that, I actually thought the opposite. Good to know. How much better is it anyways? The only thing is running cat5 would be mighty expensive to run in my house I would think, the FiOS box is in the garage and its a good 100ft of cable to get to my computer room.

I do notice that the Verizon wireless router is a bit weak. I had my own D-Linx router, and have tried the verizon router, but I do think the router is the weak link to the system.

I gave up TimeWarner about 5 months ago. Glad I did. Companies like that should not be allowed to exist. Rude people that think the customer exists for them. They unfortunately bought up the small company, Adelphia, over here. Adelphia was a great, nice company I loved dealing with. Actually the nicest cable company I ever dealt with. TimeWarner screwed them up badly.

Good luck in getting rid of them. The only beef I had with Verizon, is the contractors that put all the FiOS boxes in the neighborhood destroyed my lawn. It took two years to get it sorted out and for them to come back and fix my yard back the way it was.

Nah, it's not that coax is slower than Cat5, per se, but with coax it means you have to use the FiOS MoCA router (Multi-media over coax) in order to get data. But if you know what you're doing (god bless you), you can just use the FiOS router as a bridge & use yer own D-Link, Netgear, Linsys, Belkin, etc. as the main wireless hub.

A damn shame about the lawns too, I get plenty of those issues. The problem is that we subcontract a lot of the digging/buried fiber drops to other companies, and getting resolution on installation/constructions issues is unfortunately lacking. Also, being a multimillion subscriber service w/ customers from Cali to Mass., it does sometimes become a case of one hand doesn't know what the other is doing (believe me, heard THAT one before...)

But we're relatively new on the block, so the best is yet to come, so to speak. I agree about Adelphia, they were the cable company in Auburn, NY (if you've heard of it, god bless you too), no complaints whatsoever. Unfortunately when they went Chapter 7, Chapter 13, Chapter 69 whatever it is, Time Warner swooped in like a vulture and gobbled it up too...can't imagine how it is now.

Well I do have my own cable modem, a Motorola Surfboard... but I've had it for 8 years, so not sure if there have been vast improvements to modems over the years. Not sure if the Verizon one is faster... but I have been thinking about putting the D-Link back on, just haven't gotten around to it.

If you do get complaits about lawns alot, there is a section of Verizon that deals with it... unfortunately I don't think its well known as I had to talk to about 50 people to finally get the number. Once I talked with those people (I think they were located in Ohio), they took care of the ptoblem unbelievably fast (literally 30 minutes after the call I had someone at my doorstep ready to fix the problem). I'll look around for the number, might get people off yer back and praise you for helping them.
