University of the Arts London is to host a show celebrating iconic album art. ‘Spin: The Art of Cover Design’, will explore the relationship between art, design and music.
The selection panel comprises: GQ editor and author of iPod Therefore I Am, Dylan Jones; Faris Rotter, frontman of the Horrors, who designed the art work for The Charlatans You Crossed My Path; and graphic design legend Peter Saville, known for his designs for Manchester independent label Factory Records.
All of the selected artwork is by alumni of the university, and the judges either studied or taught at the university’s colleges.
Images that were reinterpreted for album sleeves and works commissioned for the albums will hang beside each of the covers.
The albums chosen span the past 40 years and cover a range of genres. Sleeves by The Clash, Cream, Madness, Chemical Brothers and The Gossip are among those featured in the exhibition.
Spin: The Art of Cover Design runs from 3 September to 3 October, at The Arts Gallery, Davies Street, London W1.
