Neon Neon woz robbed.
Mind you, the history of this prize has the runners up doing far better than the winners in the long run, doesn't it? Whatever happened to er, all the people that have won it in the past? May as well rename it the "Once you win this your profile will vanish" gong.

Nope. It was won by Suede. For 'Suede'. Which even the most die-hard NO fan couldn't complain about. Great album. Certainly compared to Republic!
I only know this cos I read it in the Metro this morning.

as the g man says, no they never won it. you thinking of the award pictured in jack? that's what you get for being "nominated" you have to pay to enter btw - have to but a table too (maybe why no burial)

Yup, it was the Jack mag that jogged my memory there. The caption underneath was a comment from Hooky saying something along the lines of "we got this when we won the Mercury" or something. I'm probably not remembering the caption right but I remember thinking at the time did NO really win it?

You know what I mean though... of course there's been a few bands and artists who have won it that have endured but there have been an awful lot that have seemingly vanished:
Antony and the Johnsons, Klaxons, Dizzee Rascal, Ms. Dynamite, Talvin Singh, Gomez, Roni Size and er... M People! I suppose I could be biased because I don't follow rap but still, what have Ms Dynamite or Dizzee Rascal done since they won it? The odd single that sank without a trace?

Errr.........Dizzee Rascal was at the UK Number 1 spot about three weeks ago with 'Dance Wiv Me'.
Fair point, as I say I don't follow rap - not my thing. From a quick Wiki of Ms Dynamite I can see that her career took a distinct nosedive after her win (2nd album didn't reach the top 40). That's the sort of thing I meant.
My original point - which wasn't clear I'll admit - was that the hype surrounding artists who win the award is frequently and completely disproportionate to what they achieve post-win. Of course, alot of it is personal taste of the listener involved but at least a few winners are never really heard of again. It has been commented on a few times in the music press that the award can sometimes be seen as more of an albatross around a winner's neck.
Mind you, I think I'll give up now before anyone else points out number 1 albums by any other previous winners
'Dance Wiv Me' was a number 1 single, not album. And you don't need to follow rap to be aware of it. It was everywhere!! Number one for a good few weeks I think.
I thought it was brillyunt. One of the singles of the year so far.
Seriously, I don't even know how it goes.
There's so much absolute bilge in the charts these days I phase most of it out and just focus on what I do like. All this urban/garage stuff is well down my list to be honest

Exactly, Gruff Rhys' work is always under rated in general. This was too.
The only problem with "Dance Wiv Me", is that Chris Moyles likes it and plays it on his show regularly.
