Well, it's like this you see.

The "explosions" they are creating are so tiny it takes a detector (which functions like a cross between an aerial and ballistics gel) the size of an aircraft hanger just to see em.

Of course, if you DO happen to be a paranoid nutter, today's not the one to worry about, they're only trying to bring a single proton beam up to speed, then work towards the second, opposing one. It will be several days or weeks before they actually begin pointing the beams at each other.
