I hope everyone's all right.

It's not in Texas anymore! It went over my house this morning. I think I saw up Jeff's skirt as he passed by overhead.

The remains of Ike (Turner? :spit: ) are sliding through upstate NY as I speak. The southwesterly winds have made it 85 degrees at 1:30a w/ 30-45 mph wind gusts. Good thing I don't live in a hurricane state, I probably would be in a fetal position under a table..

Well, this time with good reason!

Oh dear, I think this is the first time I've been forced to disagree with you mate....

  1. I'm not even an Engerlander, and I think Jerusalem's a corker of a tune. Possibly this is due to Python having a thing for it. I remember standing at westmoorland services, with the kind of weather going on, that NI usually gets the reputation of.....4 seasons in one sky.....and thinking "what a gorgeous placem any wonder they fight like cunts when it's threatened", and I swear I could hear that tune welling up inside me.

  2. That awful woman, not only makes hideous music, but also sounds like something between Leonard Cohen with tits, and a bag lady with a broken nose.

  3. There is NO point 3.

  4. It's hard to feel sorry for people who build wooden houses in Hurricane/tornado prone areas. I mean, if you can't grasp the basics engineering concepts of The Three Little Pigs, I'm thinking you're a cert for a Darwin award one way or anther.

PS: Last night of the Proms can be a good larf, but sometimes, just for a millisecond, it can look just a teeny but Nuremburg.

PPS: didst thou get my reply to your PM bout MIDI and shite?

Yeah thanks Ste! No but serious..you would wouldn't you.

WE didn't get Sharleen in the North,we got Russell Watson in Buile Hill Park,Salford, about 2 minutes walk from our gaffe. They never shown it on telly the bar-stewards. Just walked past at the end of it,with him singing ..

"You raise me UUUUUPPPP..."

:topic: Now then what happened in Texas again..?

Frigging weather people, telling me it was going to storm like crazy here in Dallas. PAH! It rained for a bit, winds no worse than during our spring thunderstorms. I lost electricity for about 15 minutes.

But it was pretty bad down Houston way. I got a text from a friend asking if she could come up. She's been without electricity since Friday night.

Then I've got my friend from Beaumont (about 60 miles east of Houston) who is staying with me, but he's looking at going back home today. He's talked to his neighbors, and the only damage to his house was, well, it's not his house, but his back fence was blown down. They don't have any electricity either, but he's got to gt back down for work.

The only poster that I can remember being from Houston is Melly, so let's all hope she's okay.

I stayed on the base for hurricane Floyd in 1999. What I noticed is everyone out in town that stayed weren't in wooden houses... those people were smart enough to evacuate. The ones still running around lived in wooden and corrigated trailer homes, the type just sitting on some bricks... that definately fits the darwin award...

floyd was crazy when it hit New York. Was caught driving and almost slid off a bridge and hit a fallen tree. All for the sake of a booty call.

Galveston is telling people that weren't smart enough to get the fuck off the island before the hurricane to get the fuck off the island now.

Indeed let's hope so. My aunt in Houston got by with part of her roof having been blown away, but thankfully there were no injuries in her area.

Well, in fairness, Hurricanes are a bit rarer and less predictable than tornadoes, and it was those I was PRIMARILY thinking of. Folks building homes in "tornado alley" out of wood, with no foundations, that requires REAL inbreeding I'd imagine.

Of course your neck of the woods has it's own version......"hey, there's not been a big quake for over a hundred years, of COURSE it's safe to build here, especially on reclaimed tidal marsh".

What Jeff said about the weathermen being as much use as a chocolate teapot brought to mind one of my mental bug-bears....... The fuckers KNOW how accurate their forecast it when they give it. Basically, the weather can trundle along behaving in a linear and therefor predictable way....OR it can just go off on one....totally non linear and Chaotic. The thing is, that is's easy to tell which way it's behaving......the various met services all run multiple computer models. When the weather is playing nice, all the models will more or less agree-ish, and the fact that one model works to 9 decimal places and another to 10, will make them disagree only fractionally. However, when the weather's being non-linear, we end up with a situation known as "sensitive dependency on initial conditions" (what is popularly called The Butterfly Effect), where the most microscopic discrepencies in either the starting data, or the calculations performed on it, will cause diametricly opposite outcomes at the end of the run. In other words, the model that is accurate to 9 decimal places may say clear skies and 30degrees, but the 10 decimal place one may predict vicious thunderstorms.....and both could be totally wrong because the temperature data they were initialised with was in error by 0.0002% or something equally as inconsequential to a stable weather system.

As such, they should give their forecast and then say...."and the weather's behaving in a completely deterministic manner today, so we're pretty confident about the forecast" or "the weather's being really chaotic at the minute, all the models disagree, so we're down to predicting based on experience and hanging a piece of seaweed in the yard, good luck!".

some people had no way of getting out of houston/galveston. i would have been getting on one of the buses or hauling ass by walking to get out of there a few days before it got there. fuck that,.
