I don't think he's unpopular with Americans because he might have killed his wife, more because his story exposes how impotent the mighty superpower has become. America is crippled by it's own legal system. The last two elections have descended into legal chaos and their most notorious crap criminal remained at large for 13 years and openly mocked the legal system that returned him to freedom. The very fact that his civil trial returned a different verdict to the main trial, and that both verdicts stand, remains a source of national shame and they just can't stand it.

How can anyone claim that justice has been done by handing out a ridiculously long sentence for a completely different non-crime like this?

This isn't the end either - he'll be out on appeal by next Christmas and no doubt sue for wrongful arrest, win £35 million from the government and buy Manchester United from the Glaziers.

Now that WOULD be funny.

I think the sentence is moreso revenge for him getting away with murder in 1994. What goes around comes around.

Kidnapping was also part of the charge since he held those people in the hotel room against their will at gunpoint. The combination of armed robbery and kidnapping combine for a much harsher sentence - so I've heard. Comrade - a little help here?

Dude was a rich, former athlete who was still on TV as a sports commentator when this all went down. His wealth, fame and inept prosecution/judicial leadership and stupid jury are what set him free. The average schlub who sawed off two peoples heads would be under the jail right now. It was a media circus from beginning to end and it was obvious to anyone that it affected all the players involved.

I don't really know the answer, but yes, he was facing 12 counts of armed robbery and kidnapping. I'm guessing that the serious nature of the charges-- robbery AND kidnapping, combined with the number of counts against him, lead to the harsh sentence.
