I've just snuck into Littleinoil's room and put his clock back.

He comes and wakes me up at 7am. He's trained not to move until the clock hits seven.

I'm playing GMT/BST roullette with my three currently running computers.

The Laptop is twenty minutes slow, because it's hardware clock refuses to be set from Windows OR Linux, you can sync it with a proper NTP (Network Time Protocol.....basically publicly accessible atomic clocks) server, and it shows right time, right up until you shut it down, when it reverts. Starting to think it's never heard of time zones and is trying to adjust for the ACTUAL lag between Greenwich and Bangor.

The main Linux machine, knows the time precisely. If you ask it, it tells the truth, but the on screen clock is 1 hour fast, despite it's being fully aware it lives in Ireland. Interestingly this means it's gone back an hour an hour early and is no, briefly, showing the right time.

The windows games machine is holding fire on an automatic time update. While this usually works, if not as accurately as Linux[1], for the next 6 months, every time I have to roll a backup windows image into place (IF you have the disc space, and I do, this is so much easier than actually having to work out how to fix the fucker), it'll re-detect the time change and set the clock back another hour!! A couple of years ago I bought a TV card, which, each time you even looked at the teletext function on....wollop, windows destroyed beyond repair[2]...I think I rolled in my backup, made in Feb, in so many times in the course of a date, that the DATE clocked round to tomorrow!

See, the life of a geek, while utterly tragic to the rest of yous, is at least fucking riveting to the geek themselves. Sitting here, wondering which machine will fuck the auto update the best.

Actually, all this talk has created an urge to sort the desktop machine's one hour ahead fixation once and for all. If I'm not back in 20 mins, try not to cheer TOO loud.

[1]On machines that aren't a bit bonkers like mine.

[2] Before any win-techies decry that statement.....ahem....VXD....complie....monolithic structure.....etc.....nuff said?

Great word, indeed

But isn't the the point of detox and being nice ( ) and healthy that you don't spend half the weekend in bed feeling rough?

Is this like second grade, kicking me in the shins type of deal... with all the things to write about Liam :love2: to come out of the blue and mention my name... I don't know if I should feel offended, complimented, or violated:scratch:

I suspect it might be worse than that, David.

You may well not even be on Liam's radar.

I suspected as much. Incidentally, Martin, I've been asked out of the blue to write a little afterword for the American horror book you're contributing to. How's that for an odd coincidence?
