I'd stop now before you make a fool of yourself.

No. It's just that some of us have actually met him and I can assure you he's far from being a yob.

Absolutely, a gent.

Of course my judgment is somewhat clouded by the fact that he declined to kick my arse when I met him (for endless yorkshire abuse of something).

I don't think this twit has quite got the grey matter required to graps that some people here come from famillies who gave a lot in one of the big ones, or even fighting some of my less pleasant countrymen.....so just maybe, they took his comment a teensy bit personally....imagine that!

To be honest who he is, is irrelevent. The forum is mostly in woeful condition. Its dominated by the same 5 or 6 people, including one Welshman who seems to document everything from his dietary habits to his bowel movements.

The contributions from North America are mostly much better and wide ranging. One thing that surprised me is the lack of threads on music technology and the like. Surprising for a band of that type.

Thats not the job of a forum, there is a chat facility and MSN for that. Effectively it has become too personalised and cliquey. Apart from Edel's threads and that synth nerd guy most of the contributions are awful.

That confused me too. Welsh Darren doesn't post much on here. Maybe he thinks Fradders is Welsh?:confused2:

Thats actually nonsense though. You would estimate on a forum of this type topics like: dance music, indie, technology, books, politics, news etc.... but it just isnt. Instead its threads like: "Do posh bird take it up the arse"?

If I'm honest, I tire of those threads too. But if you read back through Behind Closed Doors, you'll see there is a always a mix of subjects. The ratio of those subjects may not be to your liking, so do something about it. A lot of the people who post on the 'up the arse threads' are actually intelligent people who are equally happy to voice their opinions on serious subjects.

Why don't you start threads instead of complaining about the lack of them? Simple.

The only comments I've ever noted of yours were snide ones when Richard Wright died.

Unless I'm missing summat earth-shatteringly important elsewhere?

Anyways, why's there these JT / Kingy threads? Have I missed summat somewhere? I see a comment's been deleted in the Remebrance Day thread?

Mansour Ali wrote: One thing that surprised me is the lack of threads on music technology and the like. Surprising for a band of that type.

There are occasional threads relating to music technology, but I'm sure most people into music technology, would go to either soundonsound.com or musictechmag.co.uk or similar. It only becomes specific to this site when it's something new order related, i.e what gauge strings does hooky use, does steve use a hard or soft beater with his acoustic kit, does barney know how to play in any key other then D, did gillian just press start at the beginning of TPK video etc.

Getting back to the original post, just because you disagree with something doesn't give you the right to offend people, it may also come as a suprise to you, but a lot of americans lost their lives in the second world war too, so you are probably annoying them too.

And for the record, I'm a northerner, but I don't eat pies, I have not been drunk for about 3 years, I'm not a lout and I'm not over weight. so you're stereotypes are as fucked up as your opinions.

Anyway since when was anybody here bothered about offending people? Certain people actually revel in it (*cough* user: uncleliam). It was only JT that decided to start making multiple threads on the issue on a personal level. No Holiday was actually not far off the mark - most of the threads from the British are on the snide side. I dont think I was departing drastically from that role.

An important question. Someone start a poll.

Seriously, every now and then, along comes someone who doesn't fit in. They often tend to go for shock posts, as in your comments re: the war dead. Possibly attention seeking, I dunno, don't care.

I can't see a great deal of reason for you being here. You don't post on the NO Forums. You change your name every five minutes. And now you are slagging us all off, when surely, a forum is about the people who contribute, including yourself.

Time to make a choice methinks.

No the actual issue is: why isnt the site attracting a wider audience than it is? especially as it is a .com domain after all. Overall I think it is best to leave this site, having seen various newbies being derided by a clique that actually cannot see the absurdity of itself.

You seem remarkably quick to draw everything on to an emotive level.

When you examine those various conflicts critically it all seems ridiculous however. It just seems to me like excessive national pride - a sort of cultural narcissism without any sort of rational thought. It wasnt a just cause and the behaviour of the British during those conflicts especially in its colonies was indefensible.

Look at the state Britain is in now, even regardless of the recession, in its dreadful shape compared with a lot of asian countries.

So you slag off the dead? The employees? Or are you now trying to say its 'the futility of it all'?

I've got my views on the army, and the conflicts it's been led into, and they wouldn't be pretty reading either. But, I wouldn't go so low as to diss the 'pawns' in the game, that are not here anymore.

Ultimately, this day commemorates in particular, the 90th anniversary of the WW1 remembrance day, a war in which people had no choice in conscripting, or they were either shot or locked up in a sanatorium.

Glad I wasnt about then, but I would never show any disdain to them.

There are many reasons, but the biggest problem is in education. For a developed nation it is severely lacking, so much so that we have to recruit most of our engineers, doctors and IT professionals from India and China. Other issues relate to decadence such as alcohol over use and general over-consumption.

I'll leave it to others to comment on the British situation, but that same argument is made here in the U.S., and at least here in the U.S., it's nonsense. With the exception of our war for independence, not one of our many, many wars has ever been about American "freedom." Still, it's taken as gospel that that's the reason lives were sacrificed.

All that said, I agree, we shouldn't forget those whose lives were cut so tragically short.

Look at the state Britain is in now, even regardless of the recession, in its dreadful shape compared with a lot of asian countries.

The examination of these various conflicts critically is the luxury of the historian, and historians tend to be revisionist anyway especially if they want to match Kershaws book sales, or Beevor. Each and every conflict when examined critically, dispassionately etc can be made to seem ridiculous. ANY conflict or argument can be made to seem ridiculous including the ones on these boards. However, when examining these various conflicts with a finger on the emotive pulse it becomes less cut and dried, rather like real life. You mention national pride, two of my fathers brothers died in the colonies as you describe them. Thing is national pride doesn't come into it for them. they left De Valera's Ireland for work in 1937 and came to the UK, the army offered them food and board and ironicaly ( for them ) the Kings shilling. long story short; they died of berry-berry on the Burma railroad, their deaths weren't unique, their graves are well looked after buy the Royal British Legion. At various times over the years members of my family have made the trip to the graves, we know their history and stories. The younger of the two, William followed his brother everywhere, literally to the end. Now my point is.. I view this on an emotive level, I know the printed history, I know the various versions of the history, but at the end of the day they were uncles I never met. On this level it's my loss, not yours. but on an emotional level, you could never second guess what I think, as for the state of Britain now; well that too is an emotive subject. One that historians will look back on with an all too clinical eye

It's easy to sit with Wikipedia and a few pretentious extreme left wing historical books at your disposal and mock what happened close to 100 years ago, Andrew. Fucking hell, you're really breaking new ground and showing all us fuddy duddies how deluded we are? Nice one, I'll start burning the Union Jack tomorrow morning first thing.

As I said I'm not particularly nationalistic being a Scotsman living in London but people like yourself and Cambo's earlier comments branding the UK as "sliding towards Nazi Germany" do irritate me somewhat. Not because they have even the remotest basis in fact (natch) but because armchair commentators like yourselves seem to think that you are somehow remotely qualified to construct such statements in the first place. The arrogance kind of irks me.

Give me a break, I came across loads of people like you at university... Ooooh you're soooo radical slagging off the West and decadence in general. How revolutionary... yawn. Oh no, you're not going to brand us Tories are you?

The last bit I have to laugh at. I am not even a student and not even particularly radical - I shop at M&S ffs. You dont have to be radical to slag off the west, just some comparisons anybody could make if they had spent a reasonable amount of time abroad.

Ally, listen, I should not have brought that up where I did, hand up, my bad...even though I genuinely did feel horrible at the time I posted it. Let me be clear re: the nazi thing....when one mentions that, one gets this "we don't burn people" thing. Neither did they to start with. The horror that was Nazi Germany or Stalin's Russia didn't start with the huge historic evils we remember them for, they started with enforced carrying of ID cards, removal of the right to take photographs, refusing a search being an offence, police vetting of entertainments (seen what the met are up to lately?). This country's a whole lot better than a totalitarian state, but what scares me is how close we might let things get to that. That looney bitch Smith and her "databases fix everything, so I want all your DNA records" is gonna fuck us all up mate. What about the enhance CRB checks where all I would have to do to prevent, Liam or Nora or LJ from ever working again would be to phone the peelers and say they touched my kid up....even if they are not found guilty by a court, even if they are not charged, even if it is proved beyond all doubt that it was a false accusation, because...well for one thing I HAVE no kids.....it remains on their enhanced CRB results for ever....with no note to say "turned out to be ballix".

And to bring this back to where we started, I will tell you who I hear these same sentiments from when I'm in work....the men who stood at those memorials on Sunday morning remembering all their friends. More than once I've heard "I fought, and my friends died to prevent this sort of thing you know!".

i have to confess i'm not entirely sure why cambo's comments were deemed so out of place on the remembrance thread. in my opinion 'lest we forget' doesn't refer only to all those brave people who fought on our behalf, but also to the lessons we learn from history in the hope of preventing it happening again. perhaps it could have been expressed a little more delicately, but i feel the sentiment of seeking to protect/not take for granted the freedoms our servicemen and women died defending is a fine way to honour their memory...

why? explain?

Remember you have the freedom to vote in this country - a choice that was made possible by the brave people who you show a complete lack of respect for.

WWII doesn't fit in there?

Had we not fought WWII, we would still have had our freedom. Hitler would have been quite content to make peace with the UK and the US, as long as he was left free to dominate the continent. Japan was not a threat to us either. In short, WWII was not about preserving American freedom (although with Hitler, who knows, he might have taken us on later). Regardless, I think we went to war for the right reasons, and as a result, WWII was our noblest military effort.

EdelBrock wrote: maybe even a possible WWI?

American freedom wasn't at stake in WWI.

EdelBrock wrote: How about the War of 1812?

The British weren't threatening our right to vote. They were boarding American merchant ships and pressing British citizens and deserters back into the Royal Navy. Perhaps we had a legitimate right to dispute that practice, as well as their effort to restrict our trade with France. But was our freedom to vote at stake? No.

EdelBrock wrote: The Spanish-American War? :confused2:

You can't be serious.

EdelBrock wrote: Korean and Vietnam (though not essentially a war) can be called into question, but the fear of communisium taking over American freedom was real....

There wasn't a snowball's chance in hell that either the Koreans or the Vietnamese would ever have the capacity to imperil American freedom. In Korea, we can at least say that we were opposing North Korean aggression, but how is it that we were at war on Vietnamese soil, telling them what they could and could not do, and our justification is that we were stopping their aggression?

most asian states you can still buy human beings. do you have any national pride ?

There are many reasons, but the biggest problem is in education. For a developed nation it is severely lacking, so much so that we have to recruit most of our engineers, doctors and IT professionals from India and China. Other issues relate to decadence such as alcohol over use and general over-consumption.

Garbage. Ill-informed, at best. My department numbers perhaps 30 strong and 20+ of them are Mumbai based. We don't recruit from India because of any educational issues. We recruit because of cost. Nothing more. Quantity, not quality. And, in all honesty, given our projected figures as far as 2010 there ain't gonna be a whole lot between UK and India figures by then. Certainly not enough to make it worth our while.

It appears you are a Yorkshireman also. One thing I have never understood about the North - Yorkshire in particular - is just how much the locals revel in boorishness. Scotland and Wales have poverty yet are reasonably desirable to most people. Yorkshire and Lancashire are ridiculous though: exaggerated accents, boorishness and inwardness are the order of the day here. A lot of this misplaced pride I am sure is a defence mechanism for not actually having anything worthwhile to say. Even when they move south (aren't they selling out their northerness in that case??) they are still utterly unbearable.

Yeah and of course its not snide to start a thread attacking one individual user. He could just as easily carried on the debate properly in the original thread. But dont let fact get in the way of your argument. In fact to be frank almost every post from the British contingent is tainted with snide contempt.

OK, just in case anyone didn't read what was posted on the Remembrance Day thread, Special boy wrote that he couldn't be arsed with it, hated squaddies, the nostalgic old hard men and the tory women that go with it.

Now, I take exception to that in the same way as I take exception to little tossers who sit on their local memorials, drinking cider, adding their graffiti etc. If you don't give an arse Andrew, why demonstrate how immature you are? Why not just ignore it? Remembrance day is about respect, respect for people who have lost their lives or had their lives ruined because they were involved in a war. Many were conscripted so had no choice, went and died. Many went because their friends did, hence Accrington lost an entire generation. Before you start whining about having a choice, it was a different world and if it's a worse world we live in it is because we are producing self righteous little pillocks like yourself.

So rather than argue on a thread dedicated to something I have the utmost respect for I sent you an open message in the way of a thread titled 'Andrew King you are a cock', I then proceeded to state the obvious.

Mansour Ali wrote: In fact to be frank almost every post from the British contingent is tainted with snide contempt.

Jeezus, you do facking exaggerate, don't you?

Or, which is more likely, don't you think you've completely just misjudged the pace of this place and are reading something between the lines which simply isn't here? The Americans appear to have even grasped the concept of 'piss-taking', is this something so alien to you?

Quite frankly though, I think your comments about Remebrance Day were completely misjudged. And it appears I'm not the only one. As I said earlier, your only other contribution to this forum I distinctly remember was about Pink Floyd in a thread about Richard Wright's death. Possibly just humour on your behalf but it came from leftfield and appear rather lumpen in content. But I don't know you and I don't know anyone who knows you so it's obviously hard to judge when someone's trying to be funny, or just genuinely trying to be a cunt.

Mansour Ali wrote: He could just as easily carried on the debate properly in the original thread. But dont let fact get in the way of your argument.

I think JT started a separate thread in order to retain some dignity on the original Remembrance thread. He had a point as well; it was not the time or place to start a sixth form debate about the origins or futility of war. Have your own opinions on the conflict fine but it was clearly inflammatory sticking them in such a thread and you knew it.

How's the arranged marriage coming along? Have they found you a lovely girl who'll - even if you don't actually like her - ensure the stability of society yet?

I already said i was apathetic about Bristol if you read subsequent posts. Why so much use of the 'c' word, you seem unable to talk anything other than expletives. If anything that post endorses what I said even more. Southerners get things done quietly, northerners cant refrain from telling everybody what they are doing. Kent, Sussex and Hants are the most civilised parts of Britain without doubt. Bear in mind that living standards nearly always decline with distance from the capital regardless of which country.

Nobody's more Norvern than me! Ask Jarvo!

Check a map, oh Austral one.

(well you didn't spec Engerland).

North of you, in England, there's what? 2 service stations and Carlisle (one very odd place). OK, yes on the other side there's more but nobody can get there cos it means going through Geordies. (edit: AND maybe Boaty's lot)

When we're suggesting which office people might attend, the only people who are for going to Druham are Geordies, Mackem's and Boro'ers....ANYONE else is like "LIVERPOOL!!!!!!!!!", mayhaps everyone outside that little corner has it marked with Dragons on their map....must be bad if they'd rather go to scouseland.

I wholeheartedly agree, I've seriously considered doing King's Cross-Edinburgh JUST for the view of Durham Cathaedral (I cannot spell that word) as you pull into the station. The fact remains that I frequesntly have the following conversation with people who are rather closer to Durham than Liverpool...... "I really need this sorting FAST, can I come in and get it done?" "Durham's your closest, and they can see you tomorrow first thing" "what about Liverpool" "well, they've nothing until next tuesday". "that'll do"

I have not a clue why. Always put it down to poor road links or something, but I'm starting to wonder.

Durham is on the A1,so we can safely eliminate poor road links Steve.I'm as baffled as you.

Maybe it's book of condolences signing addicts, you deal with in your department.

You wouldn't be far wrong, because we're beaten into saying things about how the offices can't do this or that.....then the buggers go and do it. Most of them are great for sorting people out, except London, who are REALLY by-the-book, but they have to be, they are snowed under all year round. We actually run the risk of getting busted and a severe talking to, for actually telling people that but, we're basically meant to say they're all jobsworths. I refuse to.

I like that Cambo. If you refuse to,I like that. First rule of life.Be true to yourself.

I bet you are a firm's man,and just saying that though.:evil4:

No,I've been in some positions at work, where I've had to stand my ground on safety issues under pressure from the top brass to do otherwise, because it costs them money. It takes guts, but you look back on it with pride, when you just know you are in the right. But then,it's a different line of work to yours..People can,and have been killed where I work.Fuck profits, safety first.

Kent, Sussex and Hants are the most civilised parts of Britain without doubt. Bear in mind that living standards nearly always decline with distance from the capital regardless of which country.

Could I just add my name to the list of people who think you're a twat.

Have you been to any Medway towns? Have you been to Tower Hamlets? Have you been to Harlesden?

Have you been to Yorkshire or Lancashire for that matter?

A Doyle is a Berk, sort of.. It's by far thee most common insult on Teesside, from my generation, and can actually be a backhanded term of endearment between friends, yet also derogatory,in a different context, like a spacker or summat..

Mansou whatshisears,is a pontificating one, just reading this thread.. Though I'll be fucked if I'm reading all the other thread,to back this opinion up.I've seen enough.

Well You did ask Cambo, you doyle!:thumb:

This is again another thread I cant be bothered reading.

Is someone calling JT a daft Yorkshireman? Considering the man has been known to hang around with me, I'd say there were 100% accurate in that assesement.

I've heard that(Doylem),from a mate born and bred in Melton Mowbray,Leicestershire...Home of the pork pie.

Maybe Doyle evolved from doylem, who knows? But Doyle is very much embedded in the local lingo..

Needless to say, when we used to play The Professionals in juniors,Bodie was the preferred choice of copper to be..
