Leaving economics aside, social issues i refer to here.

Does anybody rate the teachings of Islam?

Personally I feel behaviours like fasting, absence of alcohol and modest clothing are all good starting points.

Even just prohibiting alcohol you signficantly reduce car accidents, violence, rape, A+E admissions, premature death, mental health problems....

anyway, discuss.....

Ok.. its pretty simple.

Islam is a religion.

UK is a proud nation with much history and much tradition. It is also a godless country, largely. We have pretty much rejected the idea of religion, as a gentle decline from c.1900, coinciding with the rise in education.

Why would you expect a nation of infidels to suddenly 'see the light' and change our national identity entirely?

It's 2008 ffs, not 1429.

I speak to many Muslims, the more radical of whom, claim this country will be the first Islamic western state in 50 years. The great thing about religion is, that you have to believe in one, before you can convert to another.

Not entirely no.. Islam does target the mentally unhinged, weak, and disadvantaged too.

I remember having a conversation recently with a group of Muslims, who were bragging about the conversion of Mike Tyson to Islam.

Actually didnt that recent mentally backward attempted cafe suicide bomber come from somewhere like Bristol? He was English, and led astray by people that wanted to be 'his friends'.

It's a bit like that over here, cos we haven't yet suffered that lot yet. This particular case was a mentally backward lad who was convinced into suicide bombing a cafe, and ended up setting himself on fire.

What about the negative attitude towards women and womens' rights? The hypocritical violent attitude towards homosexuality? The poor fashion sense? A huge step backwards for civilization.

Christianity is bad enough as it is... they don't back up their words with their actions, Muslims seem just as self-righteous.

Prohibition, the word is so linked in my mind to Al Capone.

You could cherry pick the best bits of all religions and still find dissenters, myself included.

I wouldn't vote for a government that stood for prohibition, which is how it seems to work in the UK, y'know an actual vote

Worked in Islamic countries and respected their ways, not a problem.... not a full life choice for me either, still to each their own.

You could also cherry pick the worst of all religions too and the results of that will still find dissenters, myself included

Most if not all religions are insidious, divisive, manipulative, scaremongering not to mention extremely ignorant of the scientific fact staring them plainly in the face.

I rate the teachings of Islam about as much as I rate the Christian bible.

Which is about as much as I rate Harry Potter.

You really are just yanking people's chains now though aren't you?

Not really, I am just interested in the practial applications of some of the ideas. Not all. Its just a lot of people in Britain dismiss it completely out of hand.

I definetly think given Britains chronic alcohol problem then that particular vice should be looked at.

The other big issue, womens clothing. There is no reason for women to be scantily clad, or indeed men, at any time. There is no good reason for it other than freedom (freedom to what, encourage male predators).

Arranged marriages are also a good thing in general for societal stability.

At least football is based on something tangible that actually exists and you can identify as happening in front of your eyes. I say this as someone who has zero interest in football although I can see why other people clearly love it and always will.

On the other hand, I genuinely can't see why anyone who wasn't brought up with it would convert to Islam unless they were caught at a bad time mentally. Just about any religion could be swapped for Islam in the above statement.

Where's Allah when you need him eh.

You do realise "turning to Islam" is more than simply dressing modestly, cutting out alcohol and the odd bacon sandwich? It's clearly a concentrated way of life and the above sort of statement proves you're just playing around with how we perceive you on here hoping you'll hit a nerve. You don't speak the way an Islam convert or someone even remotely considering such a life changing experience would.

You sound like you're weighing up buying a second hand car whilst trying to tie it in with "mending Broken Britain(tm)".

Why did you have to bring science into a discussion about religion? You know it's based on reason and logic?

You do realize that religon saved science and kept it going after the fall of the Roman Empire.

The two answer different questions anyways: Religon - why we are here and how to act?; Science - What makes us and the universe work? The two have worked together for thousands of years, but only recently have we seperated the two (now watch someone give me high school level thoughts on Galileo or other such problems, but not really understanding the history of science).

The main problem with Islam are that the teachings and the leading figure (Muhammed) do two grossly different things. There really isn't anything wrong with the Kuran. Actually a good read, and something everyone can pull something worthwhile from... but when the founder was hell bent on eridicating those that didn't follow him, well there in lies a problem... there are those in Islam that follow the Kuran, and are peaceful Islamics, adaptable to society. The others follow Muhammed and believe his actions were a template on how they should act.

So answering your original question really depends on which form of Islam that is followed.

Nah, I've got university thoughts on Galileo, just wrote an essay on him. He definitely saw things in ways that nobody thought to consider. Saw the moons of Jupiter and said Copernicus was right.

You are right - they answer different questions, but as the Doctor says, the sky fairy doesn't really tell us much about much.

Congrats on the degree:thumb:

The "high school" thing wasn't directed at you, its just the favorite example used to show how "Christianity kept science down", when on the whole it kept it afloat and actually help it flourish. There was much in-fighting on to what degree science should take shape... just as much as there are questions about that now. Truth of the matter is science has always been a handmaiden, in the past to religon, now to government... its never stood on its own, and probably never will.

That's probably true, but science has usually served society, so when religion was dominant in society it served that. In the early modern period, it began to serve government on a utilitarian basis. It's more independent than it used to be.

But how many lab coats do you see in Riyadh?

ideally, schools should teach all religions equally, also agnosticism, and people can make up there own minds, also why should everyone believe in one religion, the true teachings of all religions allow peaceful integration between all faiths, as spain did for many years after the inquisition.

I think most western countries, england in particular, have a problem with any religion they would call extreme, the decline in nuns and priests confirms that this is not just relating to eastern religions.

For the record, I was brought up a catholic, and I think the religious education in catholic schools is very blinkered (or at least it was when I was at school, a long time ago!) but I'm now agnostic, saying that I love Christmas!

Also, I have met heavy drinking, drug using, wife beating, misogonyst, thieving, violent hypocrites of all religions, no religion can stamp out that lot.

In fact most suicide bombers, or attempted suicide bombers even, have not been diagnosed with any form of mental illness. In this case the lad had been diagnosed with Aspergers Symndrome, which is an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). I know a lot about it because my 6 year old lad has it. And my lad ain't mentally backward, in fact he's got a farkin huge IQ. He just has problems with social interaction and interpretating the hidden signals that we use and take for granted every day. You are lucky, my text disappeared...

All the European countries which host a huge muslim minority face the same problems.

First of all, this remains minority. I cannot see why the majority would have to follow a minority art de vivre. In these minorities a lot of people try to integrate in the country they are. And you can claim all you want, the ones who cause them the more problems are not the ones of the majority, but the Holy Guards of their minority.

I know Brits and French like to hate themselves, by tradition, sake of history. We can claim that we are living in the two most different countries in the world, the problem is the same.

So my point is that there is an alternative to Islam reeducating any country.

Oh no, I wasn't suggesting that at all, and apologies if it came across that way. I was merely using it to say that the extreme side of Islam, as do many religions in fact, tend to exploit the susceptible and naive, normally through social interaction. 'We wanna be your friend' etc.

I went to uni with an autistic guy, who was clearly supremely intelligent to us all, but when it came to common sense, and being streetwise, he was always being taken for a ride. Nice chap though, but perhaps too nice.

Soufie Muslims from Turkey are ace. They do all the bad stuff, have scantily clad lasses etc. When pushed on Islam, they say 'it's in their heart', often with a chuckle.

It's the Sunni and particularly Shia you've got to watch out for.

In Britain it is common for a growing minority of teenagers to have several children, often with different and unknown fathers. On the other side of coin you have bachelors/spinsters/shagabonds in their 30's and 40's. The latter being unmarried and free are more vulnerable to the risks of alcoholism, driving offences, risk taking, promiscuity, VD and inevitably also prone to sexual deviance such as rape and possibly also paedophilia.

Alernatively towards the orient, people will be coerced to marry people with similar characteristics in their late twenties after education and vocations have been consolidated. I am not saying we impose this on the people of GB but it is important to be aware of why western civilisation is starting to fall apart a little and how some of the above problems are interlinked. Whether Islam is the vehicle for fixing the problem, who knows.

I think we've been doing pretty much the same thing for the last 2000 years. Going back to 1429 isn't going to help matters.

I think you are perhaps correct in linking alcohol to some of the social problems in this country, although personally, i think that in the last decade and a half its become more readily available. This is reversible; it's government policy. Stricter licensing controls would help (i.e. stop giving a license to every shop along the street). Policing needs to be changed; i.e. police turn up fast when you call them (not 24 hours later), and perhaps the judicial system needs to actually stop letting people off. Another thing that would help is reforming the benefit system (particularly incapacity benefit), and also much tighter controls on immigration flow.

Religion is not a cure in any shape or form.

If girls aren't meant to have babies until they are like 25 of something, why did oh so fucking clever cunt allah design them differently? Paedo is he?

Actually the pelvic floor muscles arent fully developed until 23 or so and optimum fertility is in the mid 20's ish. Islam isnt completely seperate from the Darwinian selection process. But actually the age of female marriage can be as low as 14 as long as they have completed as much education as they need.

Actually its not any more independent now than in the past. The only studies are those that government or markets find is worthwhile in funding... and many of these are only looking for one answer. Without funding there is no new science...

On your last note, it is interesting that the Middle Eastern countries are the initial countries to save Greek and Roman science, without them all would have been lost to the barbaric horde... then the Catholic church took science under its wing (having to retranslate back to latin from Arabic) and soon after Islam came around and science was destroyed in the area. It really is amazing that we know anything about Aristotle (which is, of course, the foundation of all science).

You really do write a load of bollocks don't you. There is no evidence to support your claims. Just because you're single, why does that make you more likely to commit driving offences? rape, alcoholism and paedophilia???? I'm single, not promiscuous, use precautions to avoid unwanted pregnancy and disease. I drink modestly, am a very careful driver and certainly have no inclination to rape anyone. As for paedophilia, that's about the most stupid thing I've ever seen anyone post. How does that sit with you?

As for why do western women wear skimpy clothes? it's because they can and aren't dictated to by misogynistic male muslims. The evidence would suggest that because male muslims can't control their urges, they make women cover up completely, lest they be raped because of their lack of control. So all male muslims are potentially walking rapists.

(a) Single people are naturally more inpulsive. For example, car insurance claims are higher from the single demographic. Other vices are equally easier to fall in to amongst singles. As for teenagers, well segregated schooling is the only way forward.

(b) with regard to your second point, people must be able to cope with the negative aspects of western culture also. If you examine it closely there is no real need for the under 20's to be dressed scantily late at night, its all about attracting attention. Its like people here and in US want to have their cake and eat it; they want the ability to be wild and reckless and then when it goes wrong to change and become sanctimonious. Its like they pick and choose their morality, some sets of undesirables are more preferrable than others in their book.

Islam really is in tune with biological reality. On youtube there are some good - and also amusing lectures by the doctor and teacher Dr Zakir Naik.

Smoking is haraam depending on your interpretation but compared with alcohol its much more innocous to society. Alcohol can kill in hours, smoking cant. People dont fight or rape after smoking etc.. In addition, smoking kills people off before they are seriously old and debilitated but doesnt put them in A+E when they are 20 and economically and socially useful.

So, you're equating a few singletons crashing their cars to eventual STDs, rape and paedophilia? Utterly absurd and you'll have to do better than a car insurance survey to convince people singletons have a dangerous and detrimental effect on society. How is your arranged marriage coming along by the way?

I'm curious, how do you rate fanatical Muslims who blow up tube trains? The teachings and guidance of Islam really worked out a treat with those people. Islam is as flawed as any rhetoric, religious or otherwise so presenting it as a miracle cure to societies woes is naive at best. Most of your suggestions involve limiting people's freedom of choice and liberty in some way so it's no big shock you decided to arrogantly piss people off in the remembrance thread. It is a plain fact those soldiers died so we can have the level of free speech we do. In certain hardcore Islamic countries this would not be the case.

Your arguments are riddled with flaws and you're putting forward assumptions you can't possibly back up with credible evidence. So far you say:

  • Northerners are boorish, insecure and ultimately useless.
  • Women who do not dress in a table cloth are slags.
  • Kids are scum and should be divided up into pens.
  • Everyone hates the home counties.
  • The home counties is the best place to live.
  • People who honour war dead are melancholic hard men or Tory women.
  • People who disagree with me are Tories.

Bollocks. There are no statistics to support your claim re car insurance. Or your second claim.

Segregated schooling - cos people of your demograph can't see a woman without wanting to rape her? There is nothing to support why segregated schooling would prevent teenagers meeting in a non-school sitation.

The 7/7 bombers were of Pakistani backgrounds. Aside from Afro Caribbeans, Pakistani asians have the lowest educational attainment in Britain. This follows through to their economic underachievements also. They also happen to be Muslim, just as there are idiots in the bible belt of America who pursue extreme Christianity. I get the impression with MSK, Tanveer etc that in essence they arent fundamentally bad as people just they are extremely niave and have a misguided sense of purpose.

But they do at least have purpose. A lot of the trashier parts of white Britain dont seem to have any purpose at all. Merely they consume and shag and pass that on to their offspring.

You have no understanding of alcohol. You don't have a pint and then die a couple of hours later. Just cos you've had a pint, you don't decide to rape someone or fight. They are individual characteristics of certain people and not related to alcohol at all.

Of course, if you advocate smoking, then you are clearly a twat.

But even with chain smoking you wont pass out or become unpredictable. The worst drinks are the shots I believe, which cause severe damage to many organs even in small quantities because the brain and the liver especially werent ever desinged to cope and process this sort of substance. But with all alcohol we know its an affliction which a lot of people cant cope with. So why the hell do people complain about drink driving, yet dont seem to care that almost anybody can buy it from Morrisons just like that. Alcohol is dangerous in certain members of the working class who lack certain intellectual functions which can be used during impairment. Many oxbridge students can conduct coherent political debate even after a considerable amount has been consumed.

Ridiculous. Think about traffic and other environmental pollution not to mention the cancer risk from other consumer products such as cellphones. Everything has a finite life span, no form of death is pretty. People are living too long and are dwarfing the number of people of working age.

The core basis of their justification for the attacks was under the guise of being Muslims and not Pakistanis. Don't try and pass it off as "oh, they happened to be Muslim" because the aftermath investigation deduced fanatical dedication to faith spurred them into loading backpacks with fertiliser and purchasing a one way ticket. The Muslim community has always had a problem with extremists and they need to take more of a responsibility to root them out rather than crying discrimination persistently. You can't tar an entire group of people with the same brush but at the same time those groups can't have their heads in the sand over glaring problems within their ranks.

Mansour Ali wrote: I get the impression with MSK, Tanveer etc that in essence they arent fundamentally bad as people just they are extremely niave and have a misguided sense of purpose.

But they do at least have purpose.

They blew up innocent people and severely injured/disabled countless others in a pointless and harrowing attack against the country's busiest transport hub.

You are in essence saying that "Oh well, they were a bit misguided but at least they had a purpose next to chav scum". As if having that particular purpose of murdering as many innocent people as possible somehow elevates them above jobless people on council estates who may be drifting through life.

Very nice. Keep digging your hole; I would offer you an extra spade but over the past two days you've clearly fired up the JCB.

What's that got to do with the price of eggs? Just because you buy 4 cans of lager or a bottle of wine from the supermarket, doesn't mean that after you have consumed it, you are then going to drive your car. Yet again, your argument doesn't hold up.

I dunno, anyone thicker than say, a poodle, probably shouldn't be allowed to do most things, children of such people should be removed and placed with intelligent relatives (you have to think of the children's right to not be raised a retard). Of course regular attendance of Mosques/Churches/Synagogues is hardly the action of the intelligent....see the plan here....get the kids away from them, cos no adult, hearing their guff for the very first time, would do anything but nut the average god botherer.

overall vaguely centrist.

Northerness is best when its not rammed in peoples faces (stuart maconie is one of the worst). Cumbria, NE, Durham is ok. Really the provinces are all fairly similar, Westcountry people, Anglian people and Northerners are always slightly behind SE England in the same way that UK is slightly behind the US and continental Europe.

There is a difference between poor people and people of bovine stupidity. Although inevitably wealth and intellect are usually linked.

Ok, in a nutshell.............

Someone says something, but not offering much in the way of explanation, upsets some other people, then someone makes rash unsubstantiated comments about other people who live in different parts of the country, which basically upsets more people ........and that's about it really. Oh, and drink, drugs etc etc are responsible for everything. That do?

EDIT: I am a woman AND I'm from the Midlands, so I may have it wrong.

Usual shite.....everything that's wrong with this country (most of which is stuff that's not actually wrong with the country) is entirely down to the lack of wide adoption of his personal view of the flying spaghetti monster.

Actually half the time he sounds like you, but less cuddly.

Thats so 2004.

Let me tell you about Islam. No disrespect to anyone but (apart from Buddhism, sitting under a tree meditating) the whole story is ridiculous. Now, I'm not disputing that some bloke called Muhmmaed lived in Mecca around 650AD and did a bit of preaching and got some followers. But the story goes like this, Mecca was full of people worshipping false gods and icons and paying a shitload of money to do it (sounds a bit like watching New Order, but i digress...) Muhammed doesnt like this, so goes up to some cave in the mountains for a few days to pray, and apparently the Angel Gabriel appears to him and says a few things (basically, there is one god and he is Allah) and tells Mohammed to spread the word. And he tells his wife, and she becomes the first muslim (apparently Muhammed wasnt a Muslim by that logic). And then his follwers grow, they get kicked out of Mecca, then they come back (which is cutting a long story short but what can yuo do). Then there's a BATTLE* which the Muslims win and whoever was originally in mecca at the time is kicked out. Muhammed then dies and ASCENDS TO HEAVEN IN SEVEN STAGES ON A FLYING HORSE. A fucking horse! Which flys! Fuck me.

Christianity is almost as bad. The whole ascension to heaven doesnt wash with me. But I dont dispute that there was some bloke called Jesus who had a number of followers around jerusalem about 2000 years ago.

*Yes, a BATTLE. Its conveniently forgotten that Islam was spread pretty much solely by war. Funny thing is, some left wing scholars subscribe to a belief that Yank foreign policy is due to the expansionist mindset, yet suggest the same to them about Islam and the spread of and the desire of many Muslims to convert the whole world they'll just ignore you. Wierd.

You are missing a point in Islam though, and the main problem with it is that its splintered into two groups... one that follows the Kuran (which is not a bad book) and others that follow Muhammeds actions (which contradict the Kuran). The latter have been dubbed 'extremists', but really they believe Muhammed's actions are more important than the book.

I do think its wrong to take a swipe at all Islamists and classifying them all under one umbrella... as this clearly is not the case.

True enough. But let's see how appealing this sounds.....give up your life of debauched hedonism and declare yourself a son of the prophet, live a life of prayer and self deprivation, and at the end of it, as a reward....you get to spend all eternity with Mansour here.

OK you clowns. As you seemingly can't so this without me, I shall have to put an end to all this nonsense.

I shall not be debating the merits of Islam other than to say the last time I looked there were a great number on Muslim states or countries where Islam is the majority religion.

Mr King, which one of these shining examples of human rights, democracy and rule of law should the West use as an example to repair itself?

Mr King you really are an annoying poster. Each one of your posts is like a papal pronouncement. Have you ever considered the possibility that your points of view may be wrong and that those of others are just as valid?

The Gulf and India. Historically everything significant tends to originate here (think maths, engineering and finance principles in particular) and even today these countries are forecasted to weather the financial storm. Gulf region economic growth should only fall to 6% in particular during 2009.

You don't seem to get sarcasm either.

Lemme see monarchies whose inhabitants would be living in tents without oil. Just try and get a fair trial in the Gulf. We all remember those cases

The last time I looked India was actually a majority Hindu country.

Even without the oil the middle east has always been successful. I mentioned India because the cultural and trade exchanges between the gulf and the subcontinent have been constantly back and forth. India has the largest muslim population on the planet. Most of Maths and Comp sci has origins there, Binary code was developed by Indian and arab mathematicians.

Already mentioned earlier, Arabs kept science from being lost after the fall of the Roman Empire, and then it was transfered over to the Catholic Church. In those times the ME was a thriving place of science and growth (when Pingala was around)... Islam stamped that out, and within 50 years all of science was gone in the ME. To think ME and India are thriving places for science (i.e. math) you really need to get yer head on straight...

Wasn;t Ghandi a nasty little racist? Didn't he write to various governments to ensure they did not confuse good Indians with filthy lazy "kafirs" (I believe that was the particular work he used).

Ahhh yes....

“Ours is one continued struggle against degradation sought to be inflicted upon us by the European, who desire to degrade us to the level of the raw kaffir, whose occupation is hunting and whose sole ambition is to collect a certain number of cattle to buy a wife with, and then pass his life in indolence and nakedness.”

Spent an unusual amount of his time giving enemas to young girls no matter what was wrong with them too.

Doctor? wrote: Wasn;t Ghandi a nasty little racist?

Gandhi was an idiot. He was quite possibly the biggest religious nutcase of them all. During the holocaust, his 'advice' to the Jews in Europe was to commit suicide rather than fight back against the Nazi's, so extreme was his belief in man and god being the same thing.

Very strange man.

This thread produces no benefits. Australia, since European settlement around 200 years ago, has done pretty well for a short time. No major historical violence. Amazing prosperity. There's a few more inventions than the stubby (lawn mower, stealth tech, black box recorders, ulcer treatment discovery), so basically go fuck yourself.

More sweeping generalisations. Do you have anything other than your own tunnel vision view of the world or prejudices to back any of this up? Or perhaps some more biased and half-invented statistics proclaiming India as the centre of the universe?

The tone of your post indicates that the bombers were pretty much justified in blowing up innocent people. Pretty distasteful to say the least.

No, he doesn't have a point, he's running out of ideas on how to keep his threads going and he's thrown this age thing in. As long as they're going he's cracking one off to them.

To be honest, I think it's pretty sad that a 24 year old is following a band that were effectively defunct before he reached puberty. It's like me listening to Genesis, Pink Floyd etc when I was at school, not a fucking chance.
