I hate to break it to you Al, but it's supposed to be quite painful. But don't worry, I'm sure they'll numb the pain first. Don't even think of going back into work. You'll look like you've had a mini stroke and will be dribbling all over your desk.

Top bleed a bit, with mild stinging as the jabs wear off. Going back to work will be no problem at all.

Bottom are somewhat more complex, often involving a night in hospital with grapes and everything.

You'll just feel a little prick when the needle goes in. It only needs to penetrate a couple of inches at the most.

They don't pull then straight out. They'll use your other teeth for leverage and pop them out like Pez sweets; work with the angle of the root. You have nothing to worry about. Unless they crack coming out, then you might lose an eye.

Book somewhere nice for dinner and try to enjoy the pink stuff and the sucky thing.

Vikings should eat Magic Mushrooms and pull their own out with pliers AL.

I had one out, wasn't the pain as such, it was the time it took to take out, and the pulling.....ooh, it was awful - nearly got pulled out of the chair!

The blood was a bit worrying too. And the PAIN afterwards.....I can only liken it to giving birth - so, it's not too bad

Had all four of mine out, two one week and two the next.

Not really painful.

Any of my back-ish teeth are so well bloody rooted that it's night-night-stevie or they can't shift em (my nw dentist tried, but she is but a slip of a girl, and basically her full body weight couldn't shift one.....she broke the top off it and left the nerve dangling in my gob for two weeks until I could get to the dentist with the cool drugs).

Those of a squeemish nature, look away now.........

I had an abcess on a wisdom tooth once. It caused me to wake my mother up at 3am asking about the easiest method of suicide, and I genuinely meant it, so bad was the pain. Now EVERYONE's wisdom teeth have deep and awkward roots (like Al's 7 shaped ones).....but combine that with my predisposition for all my teeth being positively dug in, and it's a serious problem....made worse by the fooking swelling round it. Off I went to the good drugs dentist, and off to happy land I went. But from happy land I became aware of something going on in my mouth and of pain, although it was an odd kind of "that's hurts" feeling but I wasn't too bothered.....until....now I know jack shit about dentistry, but what I "felt" in my mouth was something like a little springloaded bolt, which hammered into the bastard of a tooth and shattered it. The first use of this was probably what reached me in happy land, and the 2nd was what made me send out a vague "ooowwww" in the direction of my mouth, after that, happy land was a complete thing again (ie the nurse turned the little tap on the drip and sent me a bit further away). It could be that what I felt was the monkee wrench thing with the band that cranks round the tooth that I've had used when conscious.........but the sensation was definitely that of a strong precise blow, and with no coresponding movment from the had I was aware of wedging my gob open.

Anyone here done dental surgery care to comment on whether a little spring loaded hammer (much like a smaller version of the mechanical cow-stunner used in slaughterhoues, or a reverse de-soldering tool), in fact exists or whether I was just gettin things all wrong on account of being only about 20% concious at the time. ?

Once, the pain started to turn me crazy at about seven in the evening on December 31st. I had to wait until January 2nd at about 11AM. No need to say I could not close one eye during 40 hours... The noise? I cannot remember it as I was too happy to see her do. She could have had a rusty tool old as Windsor Castle, I was in a state where I could have lick her feet to release me from pain.

And the liquid to spit is green over here...

A thought that has crossed my mind on several painful ocassions............

All these survivalist loonies, from Ray Mears to the weirdos in America, all their plans and preparation and knowledge are very impressive and will see them in good stead......right up until the first impacted or infected wisdom tooth. I mean, a bad incisor, string round it and off you go, but getting your own wisdom tooth out? I think not.

Get some over the counter coedine and voltarol; the hardcore versions of paracetamol and brufen. Feel free to take double the dose... I did and was still edging my way up the walls...

Had mine out when I was 16. Took about 15 minutes to extract mine. I did throw up afterwards from having too much IV in me.

Medical FAIL. Codeine is not in the same class of drug as either paracetamol or Ibuprofen,those are both anti-inflamatories and will do wonders for actually treating the pain (particularly Brufen/Ibuprofen (same thing, Brufen is the original brandname if I recall correctly)). Codeine is more of a neural blocker (dunno the correct term), which fucks with pain signals so that you do not feel them....as such gob pain is best handled with neurofen+ which has codeine, and by the time it's worn off, the ibuprofen has taken some of the nastyness out of the toothache/wound. Oddly my opium derived Trammadol are utterly, UTTERLY without effect on tooth pain. I can have enough of them in me to enable me to walk around with open wounds rubbing agains my clothing, but toothache will still punch clean through them and I'll need somthing else for that.

Dunno if that goes for everyone or just me, I am wired a little oddly accoring to several Doctors (none of them of the sort who provide tailoring facilities for jackets which button at the back, I assure you.....I just run when I see them cos I figure as soon as a shrink gets their paws on me, my number's up ).

That IV musta been heavy shit for a straight edged young lassie like yourself. Whilst being helped down the stairs from the surgery by my mother, post IV, I swatted her off me and pointed out....."If I can make my way down five flights of stairs to get out of Vico's after a 6 hour set and half my bodyweight in booze and drugs, I can walk down some stairs with a bit of hypnoval or twighlight sleep or whatever this shit is, thangyewwverymuch". Had mine pulled out in boot camp... not necessarily the best place to get it done. Was able to get a one hour rest afterwards, then go about running all over the place as usual.

Plus the wisdom teeth jacked my teeth all up, so much that the one wisdom tooth had spun 90 degrees, which intruiged all the dentists (about 50 of them) to use me for a class of "Hey, check this out!"...

They had a make shift dental 'trailer' where I got it done. Had novecaine during the procedure, but Motrin for the remaining pain**.

It must have been funny watching me try to get back to my platoon though. I was running trying to avoid the DIs, and when I bumped into one, I would hold up my "no talking/yelling" chit... of course it would take a few moments of them yelling at me to "speak up" that they realized that I wasn't able to talk.

Only had my bottom right wisdom tooth out, was done at Aspen Dental (read: the Wal-Mart of dentistry ). Not sure why they didn't simply grab the other three at the time, most likely because most dental insurance in Jesusland is shite ($1000-$1500 max a year, when most extractions/root canals start at the $1K mark, so you've got to foot the rest for x-rays/cleanings/fillings, etc., each not cheap either).

Anyways, they used a ton of Novacane (god bless it), but they had to disintegrate the tooth into 3 easy pieces to extract. Not so fun, wish they would've gassed/drugged me at this point. Pain only moderately unbearable for the day after, worst part was bleeding out of my mouth all damn day, went through an entire bag of the gauze they gave you, was thinking about getting myself to a clinic if it didn't stop.

Big bonus: Tylenol #3, it does do wonders (directions indicate one every 6 hours, took about 3 during this period, very short half-life). My current dentist, however, hands out Vicodin like Skittles. Dr. House, here I come!

Ahhhhh novacaine, there's another thing that my "odd wiring" interferes with.

Dentist gives me the injection, waits the required couple of mins, I feel numb-ish but as soon as a tool touches the tooth, there is undiminished pain. Dentish proceeds to inject as many doses as are considered safe (which seems to be 6-8), eventually deadening the area just enough for me to deal with what is now just discomfort rather than pain. I leave the place and about 30 mins later, I'm numb from somewhere round the back of my head, down my arms, all over the place, AND more than a little bit wasted, this proceeds to last for fookin hours.

The attitude to really good medical drugs in Jesusland is great, I can't understand why anyone would bother with anything illegal (except pot of course).

So Edel, as someone who is actually trained to survive on his own.....do you reckon that faced with an infected wisdom tooth you could self extract? Or would the old sidearm be the better option?

Yikes, there some cross connects def. not right there. Reminds me of my ex, she has had chronic, undiagnosed abdominal pain issues for years & years, exploratory surgeries, removal of gall bladder, etc, have done fuck all to relieve it. Was even at the hospital where they gave her a big ole shot of Demoral (Demeral?) to her leg, didn't touch the pain, which she described as just shy of suicide provoking.

Fuck I'm glad I'm (for the most part) healthy.

I broke out my front tooth when I was 21; racing shopping carts down a steep hill, with a wee bit of liquid courage in my system (about 18 beers if I remember correctly). The tooth was dangling by the nerve. Ironically the alcohol helped with the pain. It was a Friday night, and the good dentists don't work on the weekend, had to wait until Monday. If a slight vibration moved the nerve I was in real pain... so I couldn't eat or drink for those two days... luckily my roommate at the time had Vicodin for his stress fracture, and that eased things a bit.

My point? Even though I was in excrutating pain, I would never had dared to touch that tooth as it dangled there... and it was in the front, just dangling... I couldn't imagine pulling out a full tooth in the back of my mouth... I think I'd opt for the revolver...
