What do you horde?

Are you a professional horder? Do you consider dumping any of your tat to be executing a friend?

I horde all sorts of things, I refuse to throw anything away if it may have a use. I refuse to delete things off my discs if I may EVER need to refer to them again. (Hence the 5TB of storage). Apart from data, I horde cables obsessively, and computer parts almost as badly....I mean you never KNOW if someone might need a spare 486dx2 I used to horde videos, tapes and dvd's but that's all pretty much been replaced by versions stored on hard disc.

I also have 11 PC keyboards and about 15+ mice. I find it so hard to get a keyboard that I love, but can never bin the old ones....cos...well....you never know when all 10 of the others might simultaneously fail in the middle of the night when I have an important rant to inflict on you lot.

Nowt really. Only thing i used to horde was old music mags but chucked em all out eventually.Had pretty much every NME and Melody Maker from 1984 to 1988 at one time but binned the lot years ago. Er, instead of selling them

Actually Steve it looks tidy on the surface, but open the cupboards and it's carnage! I have an annual clear out but find it difficult to get rid of things, as you never know when you might need them again. I have boxes of tape cassette's in my loft, and I know I will never listen to them again, but still can't bring myself to throw them out.

I hoarde clothes too. Refusing to throw out/send to charity shop as you never know if they might come in fashion again (even though, if they did, I'd buy new anyway).

I keep all boxes for everything from hair dryers, kettles and stuff, even though some of these items broke and were thrown away a long time ago.

I also have back issues of Viz magazines in plastic sleeving, even though they're probably not worth much.

I need to be tougher and have a proper clear out.

Oh aye, boxes of old cassettes in the loft.From time to time when i'm reminded on here or wherever of an old track that i know i have on casette i've spent way too much time climbing into the loft to trawl through to find said track.Often to no success having wasted half the day.

Cassette tapes (I tried selling the full set of NME giveaways once and got laughed out of the shop, books (I have more new books than I could ever read, mostly in the loft gathering dust, including several 'special' versions of the same bloody books), cds, 12" singles and lps (I plug the deck in about twice a year but still buy endless copies of 'hard-to-find' vinyl which never gets played) and more than anything nowadays - downloads(okay they don't take up much space but who listens to everything they ever download?). My ipod is full and I will buy a new one just to get more storage. Nuts!

I use to horde things but the missus made me change my ways. Its quite liberating but sometimes frustrating.

Moving house 5 times in 5 years means I have had to get rid of lots. Cassette tapes, clothes, musical accessaries, etc.

I have the same at home.

Where to begin? I horde all sorts of things. Really drives my wife crazy. Japanese are used to living in small quarters and saving nothing, then she comes over here and I save everything.

I have a knack for building things out of old materials and improvision. That being the case, if there is any thing that I see as possibly useful (screws, wood, tile, old car parts, hinges, wire, piping, etc) I save it. Before I throw anything away, I take it apart and scourage it for useful parts. Have a real organized garage, so everything has its place, but my wife would love to throw everything out. I constantly amaze her with things I save and use 5 years later... but it doesn't convince her that we should keep it all.

But the basic rule applies, keep it for 5 years and you won't have need for it... throw it away and 3 weeks later you'll need it desperately.

i got a skip this week and chucked the lot.

i've got rid of exercise books - and passed notes! - from school, an old 'braun independent' curling tong, a my little pony grooming parlour, knight rider walkie talkies, loads of cassettes, 20 year old bits of plasticine, a grolsch bottle top, ten tons of balsa wood, an action man canoe, three cd/radios, countless hats and broken jewels, a bed, an old violin, one of those cotton reel things from the inside of wire cabling, quite a few big springs (i find them really appealing) two pushchairs, several skateboards...i could go on.

the letters, the flyers, the tickets, the face magazines and nmes will be going in the second wave after christmas. the clothes will be the worst.

I used to collect EMPIRE Movie Magazines from 1989.But when I moved out of Whitefield,I had to have a rethink about my idea of storing them for review referencing. Yeah Jemmie I used to collect VIZ too!

Speaking of mags.....I only 3 years ago disposed of my SoundOnSound mountain[1].....about 80% of issues from late 86 or early 87 up to the turn of the millenium-ish....it was SERIOUSLY hard to do, because I KNOW they are jam packed with useful shit. Still I think you can buy most back issues on CD/DVD now.

I keep used batteries for years. I have this idea that if you keep them tucked away at the back of the draw for 3 or 4 years they might somehow re-generate themselves!!

If you stick stuff up in the loft and dont use it for a year, you can officially bin it.

I do have a lot of old PC bits in the cupboard. I really wish I'd been more organised and sold them as soon as I stopped using them, as they lose all their value quite quickly. Now they are pretty much worthless but it still seems a waste to throw them out. I think even a charity would turn its nose up at stuff this obsolete.

Then there are all the books and CDs...
