Well, well.

Mr Smith seems to be mental enough to pull it off.

My only reservations are that we're losing a GREAT doctor (who knew the character backwards, being a whovian himself)....Mr Smith may suffer Peter Davidson Syndrome (where everyone hated him just for not being Tom Baker.....looking back, he was great). I am also a little dissappointed that they went for the damp gusset vote with a still younger Dr.....I'd sort of thought they'd go cogity old git for this one....ah well, maybe next time.

Anyway.....it's probably about time I regenerated myself.

PS: You know the way a certain segment of the Christian population has those little "what would Jesus do?" stickers, (which they look at and contemplate before doing things that would sicken the middle east's favourite fictional character to the pit of his stomach)....well I do, honestly, very often find myself in the shite and thinking "what would the Dr do".....usually works a treat (and YES, the last time I had a difficult meeting with the powers that be in work, a small white paper bag was produced and offered round.)

Big disappointed at first. Was hoping that geezer who used to play Johnson in Peep Show or that woman who played that part in that Dr Who episode where she was predicting everything people were going to say. 'Johnson' from Peep Show would have been interesting.

Guess i'll take to this Smith lad in time.Recognise him now i've seen a few clips of him in other stuff.

He looks like a glue-sniffing vampire.

His jaw is unnaturally, unfeasibly big. I'd have to punch it more than once to put it out.

Looks like someones bust his nose, and that bouffant needs sorting out.

He talks too much like a student at the moment. Needs to work on that.

He's from Northampton. They won't shut up about that for years now.

He's just a facking kid, isn't he?

I can see him in the part to be honest.

He has a lot to live up to following David Tennant, though. Realised on Saturday that DT will, for my kids, be 'their' Doctor, just like Tom Baker was 'mine'...

My first reaction to the new one was one of disappointment. However, we'll give him a chance. What is FAR more upsetting is the rumour that they've got Lily Allen as a possible side kick ???? :nonono:

Yeah i was a bit disappointed when i saw him. He looks like an EMO! Having said that i had reservations when i saw Mr Tennant seeing as i hadn't seen him in Casanova. Jury's out.

Should've been David Mitchell in the role with all future episodes shot in the "camera perspective" format of Peep Show  Mitchell's Doctor fretting to himself about whether the assistant will shag him would've been comedy gold.

I will play devil's advocate by saying I've never seen the fuss regarding this show and how precious people get about it (bless)... and I've indulged in a fair amount of geeky sci-fi in my time. It's also a bit irritating that the Beeb hardcore saturate their own stations with information on it; I know they have to promote the show but they overdo it by a country mile (yes yes, if I don't like it don't read it etc).

In fairness, I liked the rejuvenated Dr Who in 2005 when Eccleston fronted it for that one series; that had a lot of promise but began tuning out towards the end of the second series once Tennant had taken over. He seems like an talented actor but he played the Doctor like an overexcited, yappy dog. Much preferred Eccleston's slightly misanthropic, outsider take on the character... was something new at least.

Knowing nothing about this new bloke... if the choice is getting traditional fan heckles up then that can only be a good thing. From the recent Xmas special repeat I caught on BBC3 the show definitely seems to have hit a cosy comfort zone; completely bored the arse off me.

Still think as a franchise it's massively, massively overrated  and essentially riddled with cloying, patronising messages of morality designed for kids. Maybe cos I'm not a kid or don't have kids meself I can't appreciate it as much as others.

Sorry  I know these opinions are sacrilege in some people's eyes.

It's the only programme we actually watch as a family!
Have to agree that the Xmas special was a let down, and personally I also preferred Christopher Eccleston. However, it's very hard not to like David Tennant even if he is an over excited puppy :) Good luck to his successor, he's gonna need it.

I think the Beeb should take some of the ample license fee money they pour into Dr Who and finance a new series or one-off special of Red Dwarf.

Now there was a legendary TV show deserving of a comeback if ever there was one

Up the ziggurat, licketysplit! :smoking:

If they can keep Craig Charles off the crack pipe for long enough, that is.

EDIT: I see some sort of special is apparently on the way but it's on Dave?!?!

Always wished Eccleston had done a second series.Think he didn't want to get typecast or whatever but one more series would have been alright.

The Xmas episode was pants. Those xmas ones usually are. Cybermen and Daleks bore me shitless. Give us more stories without them, like 'Blink' for example.

The Daleks still look like dustbins some primary school kids went to town on with several lamp shades, a can of gold spray paint and a large tube of Uhu. All the modern CGI in the world won't disguise the fact they still look completely shite and totally unconvincing as villains.

The Cybermen concept has since been done better and far scarier by Star Trek I.e. the Borg in First Contact.

It's not necessarily Who's fault (thrifty British TV budgeting etc) but a many other sci-fi shows have done the basic concept of their baddies bigger and better. I think the show is popular because it has holds a romantic nostalgia for people rather than being genuinely great television.

Mind you, the gay Daleks from VLS were ACE! :thumb:

Exsperminate!!! If Fradders were a Dalek, he'd be one of these chaps

 Funny as

Aye and like you say Cybermen don't really hold a lot of sway after stuff like the Borg in Star Trek (never been big on that series but the odd one or two with them has been alright)

Again, like you say, the show probably is more about nostalgia than genuine qulaity but the odd story is good.Funnily enough when it doesn't involve the Doctor so much.Like Blink and that one where the giant cockroach stuck to Catherine Tate's back.

Problem with Red Dwarf is that when it had a very small budget it was fantastic, when it got a big budget it was shite, it just lost all of it's atmosphere and charm.

No chance pigdog!

And Ally....your blasphemous outrages have been noted

Actually, the only offensive thing anyone posted is that a pathetic yank rip off of the cybermen (right down to robbing their fucking best lines) are somehow better than the originals. Borg just want to be loved, and to touch each other's bottoms and explore their humanity, cybermen are cunts.

They were supposed to be doing a big screen version of it,well that was before Craig Charles ended up on Coronation Street. Speaking of which...classic line last night when Steve catches him with his mum. "Do you mind? I was born from between those legs!!!"

I don't watch soaps as a rule, but if Coronation Street is on, I'll leave it on. Couldn't believe my ears with that line last night!

Apparently the new butcher in Corrie is to be haunted by the ghost of Fred Elliot by wearing Fred's straw hat, his hat I say! I'm tempted to start watching Corrie properly just to see how they do this.

The crew are recording four half-hour 'specials' to be shown on 'Dave'. When you think about it, 'Dave' is quite appropriate. Filming starts this month.

Craig Charles has also said that there's a strong possibility that the Red Dwarf film will also finally be made or at least filming will be starting in 2010. It'll have taken them nearly 15 years to sort it out LOL
