my local Woolies is being turned into a 99p store as we speak in lightening time. Closed last Friday, will re-open on Monday, everything under a pound.

They don't have the BBC in Accrington then? I'd have thought the World Service at least would carry that far into the norther wastelands. They're ALL shut, the whole lot. The day after it was announced the one in Bangor was queued out the doors, I went round to try and grab another wind up lantern (read as "wind up power source"), and could barely get in. I felt like yelling "if you cunts had been here yesterday they wouldn't be closing you carrion crow fucks"

The Woolies head office is opposite my office. Gutted to see it go, pubs round that area gain a good rep if it's thought it's 'where the Woolies girls drink' - they had some right fit office birds there.

I'll miss it, as purveyor of all sorts of weird crap you couldn't find anywhere else.
Last summer, I was desperate to get my hands on a four legged, folding chair for fishing, while Argos and the local tramp shop had several options, all were just not right, either they didn't fold up the way I needed them to (into something round that would easily co-exist with rods), or had feet or leg mounts that would shit themselves at the first WHIFF of a barnacle covered crevice...or some rocks (boomtish), or they just looked like 15st of paddy cunt was somewhat outside their operational limits. Walked into woolies, and sitting RIGHT at the front of the shop,PERFECT folding chairs, WITH a carry handle so I could bungee me rods to the side of the chair and use it as a rod carrier....AND it had a fuckin cup holder built in. Best bit was, it was £9.99! and when I took it to the till, the chick said they were just about to put stickers on them marking them down to £5.99...bonus!
They also sold all those batty JML things which I ALWAYS investigate thoroughly as some of them are kinda clever.

Woolworths was never fit for purpose. It sold inferior products that could be obtained cheaper in about 6 or 7 other retailers. Surprised it had lasted this long.

Years ago we had a woolies in town which covered three floors and you could basically buy everything from a nail to a record. It closed in the early 80's to make way for a topman/topshop combo.
It reappeared in 1994 in the white elephant which is imaginatively called the mall.
I rarely visited to be honest.
Stuff was far too expensive and sounds daft,hated the poor layout of the shop (tesco is poor as well).
I dont think i ever bought a cd or dvd from there as they too were poorly laid out and it was hard to find a specific title without looking through racks of cds/dvds.
They never seemed to have any different stock and everything was just piled onto shelves.
I think the only thing that kept woolies going all these years was the kids clothes and the pic n mix.
It is very sad that another great british institution has gone the way of the dodo,but perhaps if woolies had have kept up with the times,then they would still be trading today.
I do feel sorry for the 30000+ staff that have lost their jobs,not a very nice thing being made redundant.
Bought one last pick and mix before new year.

Aye but the bag you got in Asda for 49p is probably full of industrial waste and was probably made by children sold into slavery.
Pick and mix has always been a rip off though, and not just in woolies.

i got one of those posh stainless steel kitchen bins in the closing down sale. Should have been £59.99, got it for £16.
Result. 
The one in my local town back home in Scotchland was completely empty and closed down by New Years Day. The space will probably be refurbished as an Iceland or something... obviously unfortunate for the people who have lost their jobs but I'm inclined to agree Woolworth's itself didn't move with the times. As far as CDs and DVDs went... why should we pay £15-20 instore when we can get it for £6-9 off Amazon?
The same goes for Zavvi, I was in one of their central London stores today and some of the CDs are still £15.99 to £16.99 I.e. THE ONES I WANTED TO BUY. Sod that! Straight on Amazon as soon as I got home and they've got them for £8-9; infinitely superior selection as well. In Zavvi's defence I would much rather see HMV go to the wall as they forever had the worst prices of any "entertainment" retailer and their online system is basically shite.
I think everyone's wise to the net now and high street shops are horrified they can no longer get away with charging what they like for stuff as people will just source it from online retailers or Ebay... tough titties for them and long may it continue.
You really are a bitch. Nobody MAKES you buy stuff from the shops. They display the items with the price on and you decide whether to buy them. The prices are probably set using a set mark-up anyway. Big stores don't have the time to arse about making up prices.

It was really 'sad' to see the one in my very middle classed second home hometown closed today........ but the new 'Poundshop' doing a storm and all that.
Genuine comment - it is a real shame - I used to buy all the kids 'Ladybirds' clothes from Woollies - better than Adams - mind you, that's going too! And they used to turn a blind eye to the kids thieving a chocolate nugget or two!) :)
... and for the replacement utensils that disappeared everytime you had a mad party. I still have a black rubber handled spatula that is the odd one out on my hanging rack. I still chuckle about where ,

woolworth's went out of business here in the states about 10 years go. seems it's going that way in Britain....
amazing , they were even selling off any fixture fitting they could fo a bit of cash,,, .

I will remember Woolworths fondly for my purchasing of Fine Time 7 inch for 10p and the Round & Round, True Faith and 1963 CD singles for about £1 a pop.
