dimeadozen.org, help please

finally got an account today, purely as it keeps cropping up here. i need help though, as i cant even log on now and eventually when i do, whats best for downloading the torrenty things?

and is there a dimeadozen.org kinda thing for films, tv shows etc, like the one dodjem is getting to grips with please

I'm a fan of Azureus (now called Vuse I think) myself, but many people prefer Utorrent.

Be careful when downloading a torrent client, keep your wits about you, as there are some malware sites with "right" sounding names, for example www.azureus.tw that sort of thing. And remember that anything asking for money isn't the right thing (apart from maybe a "donate" link).

As for sites to get torrents on, demonoid's quite good for a bit of everything, but I dunno if it's public or invite only at the minute (might be able to dig you out an invite if it IS locked).

Two tips for the wise newbie torrenteer.......

1. Enable either safe peer or peer guardian in whichever program you decide to use....keeps unwanted snoopers from connecting to you, though you are at minimal risk as long as you don't download the newests top 10 albumbs and latest hollywood blockbuster.....the RIAA and MPAA and BPI have much better things to do than monitor activity on some New Order bootleg.

2. Use the "statistics" page in your program to adjust your upload speed....the perfect speed is the one which is the highest which still produces a completely flat trace....if you go too high the trace goes extremely bumpy, and this indicates you are choking your outbound connection. This fucks up your downloads because each time a machine sends a chunk of a file to you it waits until your machine says "yup, got it" before sending another, so obviously if you are delaying those from getting back, you are delaying the next thing being sent to you. Do your adjusting ONLY when running a very active torrent which is capable of actually swamping your connection or you're wasting your time. As you get the up speed right you will see your downloads getting markedly faster.

A general rule of thumb is to use a speed checker to find out the maximum upload speed of your connection, then set the maximum upload speed in your torrent software to be 90% of that value.

Also, for Dimeadozen in particular, you need to leave the torrent running after downloading is complete so that you continue to upload to other users. Some torrent sites will cancel your registration if you don't 'give back' a certain percentage of what you download. This is referred to as your 'share ratio' or something like that.

Agreed, but that statistics method is a bit more, what's the right word? "real world"? Though doing as you describe is absolutely the best way to locate yourself in the right ballpark before you start fiddling.

Some sites let you donate to boost ratio, I rather like that as my outbound connection stinks. You'd think that sites that do this would be terrible, because nobody would seed, but it's actually the exact opposite, sites that let you bribe your ratio are always full of madmen connected straight into the uberpipe, who seed TB's not GB's. Those who can, do, those who can't, put their hands in their pockets to pay the webhosting for those who can. Just gives the lie to "torrenteers are miserable freeloaders"....I'd gladly pay the legitimate rights holders for the same service, but they're all still living in the 1940's it seems.

Some trackers do odd things too, like meter your download based on current upload on the specific torrent. Eg, you are seeding one torrent at 10KBps, and downloading another which is coming down at 40KBps, and has an outgoing of 10KBps, on some trackers if you stop the seeding torrent, freeing up outbound bandwidth, and allowing the downloading torrent to upload at 20KBps, your download rate on that torrent will ZOOM upwards to 80 or 100 or even to the saturation point of your connection (200-220-ish for a 2Mb connection). It's a Good Thing from the point of view that it strangles gits who have their outbound set to sod all, but it's a Bad Thing in that it encourages people to stop seeding completed torrents (at least temporarily). Some trackers even run a speed test on you, and throttle you if they detect a load of slack outbound bandwidth (they're few and far between though. I've seen torrents from demonoid do it, but I'm not sure if they were on Demonoid's own tracker or an external).

Finally, particularly with completely public sites....keep your eyes open, read the comments (ignore the 12 year olds from Sisterfuck Idaho who post endless "Ths Sux, doz nt werk" comments on everything from windows rips to text files), you'll have to use your own judgment when viri are reported in a torrent, read all the comments and decide for yourself if it's a false postive or not.....and of COURSE, keep your own defences up at full power when running/playing/unpacking anything from a public tracker site, you never know!
