OFCOM allows wireless devices here to hunt around for a clear frequency within their assigned band. As such, only wideband interference generators [1] cause real connection issues. Most other "gadgets" are fairly precise in their interference bands (unless you are a tinfoil hatter who switche on the clock slew functions in their PC's BIOS.......assuming the thing ever boots again after you do it of course)[2].
I'm surprised it's so bad in Jesusland....sorry, I believe it's now know as the USA or something?.......the FCC are seriously hard nuts, they lay down not only massive requirements on how much interference devices can produce, but ALSO how much they must be able to resist (UK,,,,if you have any gear that's sold the same way world wide, it will have an FCC compliance sticker on it for your convenience in verifying this). Does 802.11 operate in one of the unregulated "black holes" in the spectrum.......that are the source of much wailing and gnashing of teeth just now (radio mics operate in unregulated bands in the US for example....so if the bands are formally assigned to something else...Kerboom).
Oh, ditch the linksys, 2nd only to Belkin in producing unworking tripe.

1.Avoid using wireless.
If 1. is not an option.......
2. Keep the number, thickness and solidity of interceding walls to a minimum.
3.Line of sight is best.
4.Connection noise, constant error retries and general maintenance of the wanky connectio medium, leaves the actual user bandwidth a bit less than you think, and makes streaming at high speeds very VERY ropey.
5.Ditch your freebie access point and put your hand in your pocket for a good one. A good access point will flatter all manner of horrid client devices, but good client devices will struggle with a shit access point.
6. If you're a Scot, or otherwise a tight fisted cunt, get an addon aerial for the accesspoint/router.....any aerial that works around 2.4GHz will be fine.

8. IF you can get your head around it, use WPA encryption. Use none, and you're a retard who deserves the child porn charges your naighbour will earn you. If you use WEP, you will be fine in quiet little rural areas, small towns and so on. In big cities SOMEONE WILL find your connection and get stuck in to cracking the WEP, it's not hard, a PSP can do it!!!! WPA is V.HARD to crack, and takes mega computers years to crack. The windows setup procedure for WPA, involving a USB stick, actually works quite well (and if that's coming from ME you know it MUST be true).
9. TV's Washing machines, microwaves, and especially brushed electric motors (drills, lawnmowers etc etc), are like little EMP weapons and will fuck up your wireless just as quick as your analogue BBC2 reception.

[1]the common or garden microwave oven blurts out a great big wideband bleeeeeehhhhhhhh centred on.....2.4GHz......and here's a note...if you have a laptop, and it runs at 2.4GHz (that's ACTUAL 2.4, not marketing 2.4), and if the laws of wave mechanics remain unchanged, Velocity will still be equal to Frequency times Wavelength.....and any and all RFi that is produced by your laptop.....while sitting on your balls....will be the exact same waves that reheat your chicken jalfrezi in the magic oven.......how's that for scary
[2] Clock slew,while it has other purposes,is basically designed to stop the CIA/MI5 plonking a black van outside your house and "Locking on" to your CPU....out of all the ambient RF clatter....and reading your PC's mind. Basically, think of the rotating shield frequencies in Star Trek......same idea,same reason.
