NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE: A SHORTISH DEFENCE

I know the NHS has it's detractors and is often far from perfect.

However;

Mum-GaryMac went into Trafford General Hospital on Tuesday 3rd Feb for a replacement knee op.

She was put on the waiting list in November and referred from Salford NHS to Trafford, she was assesed in December and given a Feb date.

The operation was on Wednesday, she was given an epidural as this is a better option compared to some after effects one can experience with a full anaesthetic

The operation was deemed a full success

Yesterday ( Thursday 5th ) Mum-GaryMac began initial physio with the aid of a Zimmer!!

Today physio will involve the use of walking sticks and negotiating steps etc

They expect to discharge her to the care of family on Sunday, not to free up a bed; but because it will be beneficial. ( it's been made clear that bed-space aint an issue, she can have it for months if needed )

Today, the health authority ( Salford this time ) will fit hand rails etc to her house to aid her recovery/getting around etc.

Basically, the various agencies are working in concert, the medical staff are outstanding and no concerns have even arose.

So in short, the NHS; yes it may have some problems but when they get it right...

I mean they've not fixed me, but by all accounts I'm unfixable, they have at least kept trying,and keeping me hammered on painkillers in the meantime.

Happy that some of my tax goes to it, pissed off that more goes to pointless things instead of it etc etc etc.

When Joe broke his ankle in November the NHS were faultless. Considering the things you read, and the relatively poor pay in some areas of the NHS, I think they do a very, very good job.

Besides, from the 17th February the NHS will be funding my Mental Health Nursing degree and i'll be working with the NHS for the next few years and in the near future, probably, when I qualify. So I have to big them up!

That said, my overall goal is to get qualified then travel and work abroad, eventually.

For the record I have two family members who work as NHS paramedics and each time I have either used my local GP surgery or the very few times I have been in hospital I have always received top notch care. This may not be the case for everyone but I think it goes without saying there are a lorryload of exceptional people in the NHS and they do the best they can with the money they have.

I would rather have seen the money the government is wasting on the London Olympic 2012 campaign ploughed into cancer research and overall NHS facilities but instead we will end up with a load of disused stadiums

my mum has worked for the N.H.S. all her working life, as have loads of my relatives, the N.H.S. is amazing, if you don't think so, don't use it, or go and live in a country that lets you die on the street if you are not carrying your insurance card, simple. and if anyone wants to praise private healthcare, one of the guys i used to share a house with, works at the place where very well known football players receive treatment. and they may all have private suites and stuff, but working practices are NOT of the highest standard.
