Mates and gigs eh? Mates and fucking gigs.
Free bubbly, promises of a soundsystem that'll probably cause a counterterrorism response, the best lighting guy for 100 miles, red bull a quid a tin.....all pearls before swine.
Now something I always ascribed to NI folks, was the following scenario, is this a more widespread scourge?
Your mates badger you for a week before The Big Gig, they listen to you and your co-conspirators hatching the plan etc [1], and you hear them making their attending plans.
You re-iterate ad nauseum, that there are 3 bands on (some of the gigs when I was still at college had 8 or 10 bands, and not just the college organised ones, we was masochists), and that you will be on at 2300hrs exactly, and will be turning over to the DJ at approx 0025hrs.
Your mates will either:
A. Weigh in at 0010hrs, utterly blocked, pilled, and downright mungfuckled, and complain that they came a long way for a very short set.
B. Show up at 0030 looking like someone took the cast of Shawn of the Dead and replaced their blood with liquid class A stimulants in a base of LSD, apologise for being early, then ask what time you are on. They will be offended and angry if you try and explain the actual time to them.
For quite a while we thought this was just that our circle of friends thought all the bands on the "scene" sucked shit. Then we noticed that when we played with bands we didn't know.....whatever time they were slotted for....their mates did the exact same thing to them. Except the Goddy[2] bands, their mates show up at 7 to pray for the gig and drink 2 bottle of britvic 55 each from then until 2230hrs, when they leave.
And on nights when busses were laid on, busses we made sure they paid in advance, and they had to be there on time? Did they look bored? Nope, fuckers were usually swinging from the rafters to the PA warmup tape (usually Orb, or New Order) and were the like a room full of tornados while we and the other local "odd" bands played. They always had the time of their lives and called us stupidly nice things for weeks, hailing us as geniuses. Next gig 300yards from the house.....back to the usual.
Worth pointing out that "Us" and "We" in the above covers about 6 bands, funk/industrial/metal, prog, Jazz, punk, "clever" electronic stuff, out and out dance-till-yer-baps-fall-off......all the same situation.
I think it's just people here are so tight fisted they'd rather hold off on paying bar prices (not to mention entering an environment where chain skinning and other activities become troublsome or impossible.) for as long as humanly possible.....doors close at 0030....they aim to be there at 0029, and if female 0035 and use charm and low cut tops to get in.
Wow.......what a ramble.
Probably take me all morning to edit it to make sense now.
[1] Rich Hayes and I have been slung from parties before for geeking out about our Akai S1000 and how we could completly re-work the set using the multiouts (or rebuild the Moog, clean the Juno in the vain hope it wont spas out, etc etc), by tomorrow night, at 5am, while utterly ripped to the balls on, well on whatever we could steal. Usually this was claimed as being for our own good as that of the audience's delicate lugs. We'd never have made true pro's, Geek Gene is WAY too strong.
[2] At the time, we pretty much considered anyone not cunted on stage to be a born again jesustard.
