Being economical with the truth

I dont know why I come to the board for questions of morality, but anyway...

I'm applying for a job at my old school. Part of me is taking the piss, part of quite likes the idea. Its mainly for an English job, (and despite much evidence to the contary, I consider myself reasonably literate), but I'm applying on the grounds that I've got excellent qualifications and can teach a range of subjects (Its all the same anyway, look and this, read it, and answer the questions).

Anyway, its Catholic School. Now, I was baptised, confirmed, first communion and all that bullshit, but the last time I went to a Catholic Service was May 20th, 1999, the day I left school, when I was offered the chance of Communion (I was last in the queue) elsewhere, and I took the opportunity as I did not want to sing the hymn "I will be with you" with my classmates, considering a) Its shit b) it a fucking hymn, and c) it was a lie anyway as I was going to college on my own.

Fast forward ten years, and there's a good half page on this form about my religious denomination and activities.

Now I could lie, and I wouldnt lose any sleep over it. But then I get to interview and I'm asked about it and I'm lying again. And if I get the job, it will involve going to mass once every half term, and there aint no way I am participating in no service.

Any thoughts from anyone?

You're 'technically' a catholic?? FFS. Just lie; then, if you do ever feel remotely guilty about it, go to confession.

I wont feel guilty about. I'll be a bit worried that i'll get sacked.

I also went to a Cafflick school, but wasn't... Fast forward ten years and I also applied for a head of department job at an RC school - just made a really big deal about the fact that I really liked the 'sense of community' and 'ethos' of my education, which stemmed from the religious nature of the school, etc., even though I wasn't actually particularly religious myself... Didn't get the job, mind, but that was more to do with my being a useless twat rather than particularly heathen... I could've put up with the masses, etc. as it was a really nice school, some of that stuff about the ethos was actually probably quite true...

Well I was brought up in that faith too - these days i'd have a pretty large question about religion in general, including Catholisism (sp?) but that doesn't stop me bringing my kids to mass irregularly & talking to them about god,jesus, etc. they have the right to make up their own minds & i'm just informing them. which is what you would do for the kids, if you got the job presumably.

so, i suppose i'm saying - honesty is the best policy - be upfront & open about your ideas/ideals in the interviews, you will always feel happiest to get the job you deserve, & in the end, you probably only have to answer to yourself anyway.

Even I'D tell my kids that sort of stuff. Dunno about taking them to church though.....I mean knowing that most clergymen "like" kids would put me off. And I don't want the church getting their claws into them until they are 18 and can make a decision. BUT, there are many pearls of wisdom buried in all the murder, sexism, homophobia and general nastiness of the damn bible, no sense ejecting the infant with the effluent is there?

Rememer that it is OK for every woman in the house to be gang raped than for one man to come to any harm....straight from the bible that is.

Be honest. If they want ya, they want ya... if not, there are other jobs out there... Why teach at a catholic school if you don't believe in it? At sometime your beliefs and what you HAVE to teach will come at odds... why put yerself in that position? If you lie, it will only catch up to you someday...

Last time I went to a Protestant Service was almost a year later...

In the school I was teaching, religion had a very great impact. "Our father" at least three times a day. I am afraid you will have to deal with religious matters. And it is hard to keep his bigmouth shut as the parents pay for the education of their kids - it is not uncommon to see fanatics irrupt in the headmaster office for complaints. If you have skills in some kind of "working day schizophrenia", then, no problem...

I know a few teachers a catholic schools and they can be very strict (the cunts kept whacking the shit out of me despite strap/cane etc. being banned everywhere else). you've kind of answered your own question anyway. if you won't participate in going to a service, then you would probably get kicked out anyway, if they have any kind of sense, which a lot of places do these days, they'll search the internet for info on you and find this!

It's all bollocks anyway, we all know that Hooky is god, and we go to his sermons whenever we can.
