Number One singles

I'm even more oblivious to current trends than you. But I really must point out that a good 90% of number ones when I was a kid, were loathesome seepage from a decaying pig carcass. Some of the crimes against music that people bought by the truckload in the 80s still give me nightmares.

talking about this recently and as the conversation meandered and evolved, we touched on teen rebellion. It was posited by a few folk that the yoof of today would have a hard time rebelling against their parents/their parents peergroup.

the old 'you aint going out dressed like that' refrain is probably seldom heard it was felt.

however most of the table agreed that if their kids ever came home and expressed the urge to go on X Factor, then teen rebellion and the ability to shock parents into silence will never really fade away.

for myself, I am so proud that my nephews and nieces speak in an argot so completely alien to me; it may as well be welsh.

There's been TONNES of good stuff in the Top 10 over the past two years. I've said it on here before, it's been a great time for 'pop' music recently. A lot of variety too. The early 2000's was a bit generic with R&B dominating but it's got far more interesting recently with the likes of Lady GaGa, Katy Perry, Kanye etc all branded as 'pop music' but all showing more musical invention than the majority of what passes for 'alternative/indie/electronica' etc.

Have to disagree with you about Calvin Harris' new one though. Sounds like dated 90's trance to me.

I always the thought the charts went a bit wrong when you can hear a new single on the radio for up to 3 months before it is released.

I still remember the days of rushing down to the local independent record shop on a Monday to pick up the latest NO single, back in the mid to late 80's, having never actually heard it before.

I think the charts are as good and as crap as they ever were. I used to follow charts religiously as a teen, and I think that's their use; an easy way for the young 'uns to get into music.

Much more pervasive in the 80's though. Now that TOTP has died I think much of the chart's lustre has died with it.

Or you can get it on Now 165 (or whatever its at these days) while its still in the charts. TBH i thought the Top 40 had been done away with

Yeah I like that new Calvin song.And GaGa's POKER FACE.There's still some good toons on there,though the chart does sway a little too heavily towards R&B.

Which reminds me,typical Saturday night at the Oddfellows me DJing. Some scroat comes up to me and says "Sort your tunes out,have you got any decent music?"

I know this usually means AKON or FLO RIDA. I feel like replying "Oh you must mean Samuel Barber's ADAGIO FOR STRINGS"...........CUNT.

I ain't got a clue which tunes have been officially number one for years..and I don't know of anyone who buys singles anymore...now that could be a sign of old age!
