defunct UK music magazines

Growing up in Canada, it was difficult to follow the UK music scene without the help of these magazines...they would only be stocked in a few shops but at 3 times the price..and a month behind!

Unfortunately, many of them have folded in recent years as the music industry in general has shrunk..here are some of my faves which have bit the dust...

Did anyone else collect any of these?

Never heard of Muzik or Jockey Slut.

We've had the Shane MacGowan cover of The Face on our wall for the last 15 years, L'Uomo Pogue!

Before i moved i threw away aprox 200 Record Collectors,Q mags since it started...FACE from 1982ish till 2001 and numerous MELODY MAKER SOUNDS and NMEs with anything remotely NEW ORDER related.Just couldn't be arsed trying to sell give or BURN.

yeah, used to get the first three, along with nme, which surely cant be far away from folding now, what with the appaling drop in standards it's fallen to now

Muzik was awful. It tried to be the NME of 'dancemusic', it even had a column called 'Hang The DJ', a reference that would have meant zilch to their target audience in the 90's.

I bought a couple of editions of a magazine called 'Underground' in the late 1980's. Anyone remember it? It was a straight-up indie mag (Microdisney on the cover of one issue I had). They used to give away brilliant tapes on the cover with the likes of The Jazz Butcher, Wedding Present and that Aussie band whose name escapes me (sang a song called 'Karen').

i've still got a stack of old face mags in the loo. they're hilarious. bought mm only once or twice when i couldn't get the nme or there was an 'unmissable' cover article. like spandau/duran or blur/oasis, you couldn't have both.

I bought one once for the CD on the front, had cover versions on it, including one of 'Showroom Dummies'. Chucked the mag away.

There was also Sounds - the music paper for greboes

I used to read MUZIK every month, bought it together with MIXMAG because i thought the UK dance scene was so fucking cool in the 90's...how wrong was i:D

Is Mixmag still around then?

I still havent recovered from the loss of RM (Record Mirror)..all those charts..........

Ooops, i used to read that as well back in the 80's...i think i still own a picture off NO cut out of a copy of that magazine somewehere. I really thought it was a 'cool' magazine back then:D

I used to buy Zigzag which covered a range of music despite it being mainly goth. There was also masterbag with the free flexi disc on the cover and the short lived debut with an lp or cd attached.

X Ray which was a spin off from XFM didn't last long. Neither did Jack or Rip'n'Burn. All early 2000's.

x ray was great, well, the free cds were!

The lyrics to JD's The Eternal were once published in Smash Hits. Strange but true. Fat Bob chose it as his favourite song in their weekly spot.

Use to buy Melody Maker and NME most weeks, plus Record Mirror now and then but that rag really became pants towards the end. Band features interviews in MM and NME used to be about 5 pages long and that was when the pages were 3 times the size of what they are now. Used to take up a whole Wednesday evening reading one interview. Melody Maker always seemed obsessed with mammoth essays spread over a few weeks on the state of pop. Later on Select was alright most of the time and recall the first or second edition of Vox having a big spread on Electronic and their first gigs in summer 1990 with Depeche Mode in the States.

I read all of them but rarely bought any - except for 'the Face'. I would get shit for buying 'the Face' - I read it because it had cool coverage of the dance/indie scene in the UK, which at the time was totally fresh and exciting, but it just wasn't on the radar yet in north america. Friends thought it was a 'fashion' mag or 'gay' mag and couldnt understand what the fuck I had it for.

Funny how that scene was so obviously 'the music of the future' at the time, then around 2001 - the ACTUAL FUTURE - it was just ridiculous overnight.

The music section of the magazine stand was the Internet of its time.
