I've stayed away from this album for the last 21 years because it was overplayed when I was a kid, and mike's strangeness not helping matters either...
...finally downloaded it today, listening to it, reminds me of being a kid, but more than that, it still is a damn great album.
Should I feel ashamed?

No, it's Michael who should feel ashamed, but not for recording Thriller.
Agreed, Off the Wall is even better: a little less flashy, a more solid, organic effort all around. Some of you younger whipper-snappers here might not be able to get your head around that crazy disco sound, though.

I agree, though Thriller was in constant rotation for me. Theres a certain magic to the production. I had the Gold disc special edition,a nd the sound was incredible.

don't you mean it reminds you of feeling a kid! LOL the album was good if you were in yer early teens when it was realeased..but it was the death nail of Disco.. and thank god for that.
Actually Off the Wall was the reason for downloading Michael in the first place. Heard a song that reminded me of being four, and wanted to get it (had Don't stop 'til You Get Enough on a 45 back then)... while doing it I thought, what the hell, I'll try out Thriller just for memories sake and probably delete it.... I only remember Beat it and Thriller, and still those songs are boring for me, but there are plenty other great songs on there.

Produced by Quincy Jones with the legendary golden ears of Bruce Swedien behind the console, not to mention an incredible talent(at the time) in front of the mic. Still sounds absolutely amazing.
Speaking of Bruce Swedien, here's a nice video of the back of a chair.
Swedien often remarks in interviews how noisy (but good) Jackson's raw vocal tracks are: voice, finger snaps, knee slaps, headphone bleed, and the scuffing of his shoes on his raised plywood floor.
in its wholeness i heard the album in 2005. It's not bad but has a few fillers. More dance, Mike, less whining.

Jackson is SO talented he has more than one front. who else can you say that about. unless you're talking about the ill-fated performance art tour of british sea-fronts that the two artists did together... in which case, prince did literally shit all over him at every venue. [jackson's fault for mis-interpreting prince's query "do you like scat?"]
It's a turn of phrase. It means that Prince danced, sang, wrote and played instruments better than Jackson. He also seemed like a (marginally) nicer guy.
