From what I read on Amazon.com and other sites, they have rated the album 3 to 3.5 stars out of 5.

Funny how the critics like SOTU for not sounding like a typical Depeche Mode album, but the fans hate it for that same reason!!

I have heard Wrong on websites before the album came out, and I can say that it was a weak track. The sound a bit industrial and Dave Gahan's vocals were overpowering. Those reasons are the reason why I couldn't get into Exciter, another miss by DM. I could care less what the fans and critics say about whether the album sounds like what DM should be or not. The only things that matter are how everything sound and if there are several strong tracks on the album.

I think Wrong is the worst track on the album! While most DM fans seem to think otherwise! Maybe it's not the worst, but it's very overpraised as some kind of return to form IMO.

From what i've heard, i'm not going to buy a DM cd, it sounds like typical melodramatic Depeche Mode with Gahan over the top spouting stupid overly important sounding drama queen lyrics. normal. Don't expect Depeche Mode to get actually good at this point in their career but the analog synths sound like a better idea than just paying some bored produceer to make them seem modern.

Reminds me of when New Order put out the new albums this decade. people complained that "krafty" was bad, that "jetstream" was bad, that New Order rocked too much (who would of though NO could be a rock band ), that NO was copying themselves, that New Order was not copying themselves and they should... hell, some fans even said "Draculas Castle" was great , while others thought that the track should have never been finished to fill up the album so they could stretch it into two records (remember that?)

DM have been floundering ever since Wilder left. Gore may have done most of the songwriting, but it's pretty clear that Wilder's arrangement/production work was the other essential part of the equation.

On the other hand I'll put WFTSC, Turn, and a few others up against anything DM have ever done. Or anything the Cure's done, for that matter (there's another band that hasn't done anything of note since Wilder left DM!)

(Footnote: another random connection - apparently Robert Smith invited Alan to join the Cure and was turned down.)

Jetstream was really bad.

I wonder why "production" and "arrangement skills" are never terms bandied about with New Order the same way it is with Depeche Mode?

Maybe it's because New Order are able to write good songs organically AS A BAND, and not having to rely on a sterile "production person".

I wonder do Depeche Mode even ever get together for band practice, the way proper bands should do?
