Went to see it last night.Loved it!
It's STAR TREK,Jim....but not as we know it.I knew from the moment JJ Abrams got hold of it that he might extract out of the series what made it so special. No subspace field,no technobabble, just good honest sci-fi fun. And it was,the space battle at the beginning was almost up there with Star Wars III. And a great sequence where Kirk,Sulu and "disposeable extra" do an Orbital Skydive. Great effects, good cast too.Karl Urban does an uncanny portrayal of Bones McCoy. It's just a bit weird seeing STAR TREK in the hands of an outside talent.Things like "Uhura.......snogging HIM" and ...well a few things happening on VULCAN which I won't spoil.Only there's a little Time Travel plot device whch explains why THIS ST history may differ from the old one. I wanted to watch another STAR TREK film when I got home,if I'd had the time. Just thinking today that as much as I love the whole series of series/films,one thing that's a struggle to keep it interesting to EVERYONE is the old PRIME DIRECTIVE.THe future where everything's so passive,no fighting "let's just create a subspace field around it". People just like to see a RUCK!! The new ST has the RUCK,the insults, the bigotry (Vulcans vs Spock, the half Vulcan half human. The next one should be even better now the characters are established.
