STAR TREK

Went to see it last night.Loved it!

It's STAR TREK,Jim....but not as we know it.I knew from the moment JJ Abrams got hold of it that he might extract out of the series what made it so special.No subspace field,no technobabble,just good honest sci-fi fun. And it was,the space battle at the beginning was almost up there with Star Wars III. And a great sequence where Kirk,Sulu and "disposeable extra" do an Orbital Skydive. Great effects,good cast too.Karl Urban does an uncanny portrayal of Bones McCoy. It's just a bit weird seeing STAR TREK in the hands of an outside talent.Things like "Uhura.......snogging HIM" and ...well a few things happening on VULCAN which I won't spoil.Only there's a little Time Travel plot device whch explains why THIS ST history may differ from the old one. I wanted to watch another STAR TREK film when I got home,if I'd had the time. Just thinking today that as much as I love the whole series of series/films,one thing that's a struggle to keep it interesting to EVERYONE is the old PRIME DIRECTIVE.THe future where everything's so passive,no fighting "let's just create a subspace field around it". People just like to see a RUCK!! The new ST has the RUCK,the insults,the bigotry (Vulcans vs Spock,the half Vulcan half human. The next one should be even better now the characters are established.

No matter how I try and try, I just can NOT get past this idiotic business of a constitution class starship being constructed on a planetary surface. it's just wrong.

As for technobabble, there is a difference between actual sci-fi, which requires scientific or at least pseudo scientific explanations, and the pathetic shite that they puked out post DS9......take and old script for Murder She Wrote or Bold and the Beautiful, and then use a PERL script to scatter the words tachyon and inverse graviton field through it at random.

Still the best scifi they ever did was the original movie,,,,and that's cos they had Ike Asimov yelling at them.

Bring back the first series :)

Yeah it is a bit mad,why not build it in zero-grav in dry=dock?

I once read ages ago that the original story of the first movie involved changing history by going back to the dinosaur age!!!

Don't know if you've seen these new boxsets of the 1st series,but not only have they remastered the old series,but they've added new effects to them too!!

I got the Blu-ray of the first season, and it has both the old and the new space effects.

Sometimes the new space shots are nice, but sometimes they are lame cause they literally redo and "improve" them with new angles, new more modern visuals. They sometimes look like full motion video scenes from a second rate video game. Lame, having CGI interns redoing the art direction without much style, after the original creators are dead. At least they did not redo the Klingons with CGI so they would have forehead bumps, luckily that would have been too expensive.

Have yet to watch this movie... not sure if I'm ready for a new cast to old names. I loved the original ST TV series, but after that it just got wierd (especially with those offshoots, like DeepSpace9). Part of the old series I liked was the cheeziness to it, and I just don't see this movie is going to have it... picture it will have a really serious air about it, and a storyline that could be written on the back of a cereal box.
