Recommend Me a Film

As I mentioned, I hardly ever watch films. Mostly because 80% of what I've ever watched has been piss poor. The good to shite ratio just makes me avoid them altogether. Listening to music, reading books and newspapers and browsing internet porn are pastimes that reward me far more than watching films ever has. I've never seen The Godfather(s), Apocalypse Now, Back To The Future, Scarface and all these other things that tend to feature on greatest films of all time lists. That said, when I do find a film I really like, most recently 'The Wrestler' which I watched on a 6 inch screen on the back of an aeroplane headrest, I really really like them and watch them over and over again. So I'm not totally against the medium is what I'm trying to say.

Clearly, I'm missing out as, for example, I'd never have watched 'The Wrestler' had I not been stuck on a long-haul flight with fuck all else to do. So recommend me a film based on the 'eclectic' and not very expansive list below of films I really really like (almost all of which I've watched on aeroplanes!).

Swingers Clerks 2 (didn't like the first one though) Lost In Translation Jacobs Ladder Once Were Warriors Old Boy (Korean thriller thing) The Ring (the American version, yeah not 'cool' but I prefered it to the original) Meet The Parents Taxi Driver Dodgeball

I'm gonna be putting in a big Amazon order on Sunday night so I'd like to add a few DVDs to the CDs and books.

If you like Ben Stiller's films (Dodgeball), then I'd suggest Tropic Thunder.

'Harold and maude'. My favourite film of all time. Must have seen it 20 times over the years. Very funny,very sad and if you like Cat Stevens,a great soundtrack.

I take it Glas, you've seen 'Eden Lake', which is probably the most talked about film in here this year, I reckon?

Personally, I'm still obsessed with 'V for Vendetta'. I'll get it out of my system one day, perhaps when I become convinced it cannot happen in these modern times.

Oh, come on. Cruise was surprisingly good in that role. Of course, the real star of this film was supporting actor Robert Downey jr.

The trailers were great. The first twenty minutes were good. Even Robert Downey Jnr being a black man couldnt salvage the lack of engaging storyline.

Perhaps it was just an American thing I dunno, but it didnt make me laugh much either.

Actually, as I recall it had a Sergio Leone-meets-dub sound that captured my interest. Might well be an American thing with that Sergio Leone guitar line.

But we digress.

Tropic Thunder had some of the funniest lines I've heard in a long time, and perhaps, ever. "I'm a lead farmer, motherfucker." "Who the crikey fuck is Half-Squat"? And of course, the subtle ways in which Downey Jr. gets his Ebonics just a little bit wrong.

All that aside, I'd say that if GlasVegas shares your tastes, he should probably avoid this film.

Now, I also enjoyed RocknRolla....

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind City of God Amelie Shaun of the Dead The Shawshank Redemption

Not a massive film fan myself, but thought these were fantastic films when I saw them. I also liked most of what you said you liked.

Just looked on Amazon and they are all cheap as chips.

Just get a collection of Kubrick, can't go wrong.

You are going to get suggestions from all over the place anyway.

I watched Clint Eastwood's Grand Torino last night and liked it.

The 40 Year Old Virgin was better than I thought it would be.

The Road to Perdition with Tom Hanks is great too.

No Country for Old Men is excellent.

Enjoyed Volver and Tortilla Soup, but both of them are bird's films.

I enjoyed Slumdog Millionaire but it certainly didn't make me feel good like it said it would on the jacket.

Other films I've seen which are alright: Defiance, The Prestige and the first two Transnsporter films.

I've just realised that I've got Clerks II here on DVD - going to watch that now.

Don't buy any of these though, G. You can borrow my copies.

but anyway Mad MaxRescue Dawn - another herzog movie. or straight story - its about an old man who rides his 5mph lawn-mower all across USA of weeks and weeks on end to see his brother who has just had a stroke and they hadn't spoke because they fell out a while, brought a tear to eye this film

Burn After Reading is a funny newer dark comedy, just saw it again. Not sure it is worth buying, but worth a watch as well as their No Country for Old Men.

've seen Donnie, Darko, Eternal Sunshine..., Elephant Man and Borat. Liked them all. I have City of God on DVD and I've never got round to watching it, will try and find time to do that this week. Have also seen Life of Bryan, shite, sorry!.

I've only seen the U.S. theatrical release, which was edited by the studio, out of Ridley Scott's control. The only version over which Ridley Scott had full control was the 25th Anniversary Final Cut. I'm going to need to get that one myself.
