need help converting the flac files so i can have on me windows media player and me walkman,
its doing me head, been using a free one, but thats gone now,
just wondering whats best for people out there
or even better a thingy which plays and opens flac and can burn them to highest quality mp3 or whatever

Audacity will do it lossless to .wav and .aiff and MP3 up to 320kbps, but you'll need to download the mp3 wrapper (or what ever they call it, the audicity site has plenty of info, and it's quick and easy.
I'm sure some purist will now slate me saying it's rubbish, but for playing on a computer or mp3 player it's OK, on a high quality hi-fi, it's probably not.

think audacity is the one im going for as i actually already have, i just use for splitting up tracks etc, never bothered exploring it but thanks

I'd try the website http://media-convert.com/. I think you can convert from flac to any other file format.
I can't believe that this kind of thing is not built in to windows, after all you pay enough for the thing, and my freetard computer can do it.

Yeah, but so is the Flac format itself (Free Lossless Audio Coodec). No reason that such basic functonality is not built into the OS, ruddy thing costs enough.

i hate windows, but its what im used to most and its only me laptop which is a Kubuntu jobby thats miles away atm, its driving me nuts this windows shit, its even a struggle back up files now

You need a waferdrive with knoppix on it, I always carry one in my wallet just in case I'm ever stuck with a machine that is only installed with windos. Very good way to test a machine too......if stuff works in knoppix but not windows then there's nothing wrong with the hardware, and you know that windows has just broken for no reason. If stuff stil doesn't work in knoppix, the hardware is broken.

i do, its actually on me piece of strings with me keys on which are tied to me jeans, never lost them yet:D

LOL Boot computer, use computer. No geeking, required it's already been done for you. The best bit is that it takes knoppix 2 mins to do what windows takes over an hour to do (ie inumerate and assign drivers to your hardware......the only difference is, knoppix, like all linux CAN drive some of it, and doesn't ask for CD's after making you wait ages).
If you do not believe me, waste 650MB of your internet bandwidth and 3p's worth of CD and see for yourself. It's the easiet thing you've ever used, promise, and the CD has every useful program you could need on it, even a full office suite.
I booted Jemmy's machine up with it while she was making tea (meaning I put the CD in and waited 2 min), and her first words were....."fook me, you made it look like a proper computer". Jesus anyone would think I was advocating installing slackware over ssh.

ulimited CD's(mum works in a school, with minor budget control:D and supposed unlimited internet

Strictly the official mirrors only. Avoid anything from torrent sites, because, although linux in any form is basically secure, a pre-hacked linux is SAVAGELY dangerous, best not to risk it.
EDIT: if it's from The Bay, then as long as there are no more than the obligatory pair of morons who post "it's a virus" then you should be OK.
You just want the latest CD image BTW, don't bother with the DVD, there's not THAT much more on it, mainly source code and stuff.
Knoppix is far from typical, although most flavours of linux have a "live cd" simillar to knoppix's most are just to give you something to fiddle with before/during proper installation on the hard disc. Knoppix really is usable straight off the CD (though it DOES have an installation system available......I'd avaoid it though, knoppix uses a type of software manager that will drive you insane in perpetual, installed, use).
I always keep it on the waferdrive, it means I can start ANY machine into a nice working Linux at any time. It's amazingly useful with "broken" computers....if everything works in Knoppix....windows is broken, if it doesn't, then it could be the actual hardware.
It's amazing to watch it go......detecting and setting up network, video, sound, the whole lot, in a couple of minutes. It cannot do 3d because they can't legally distribute NV/ATI drivers. And if you have a nice normal, external ethernet broadband router, and have left it alone so it assigned IP addresses to any computer that asks, knoppix will be online the moment it hits the desktop, with NO interference from you at all.
EDIT: the icons on the desktop will correspond to your hard discs, Linux doesn't do drive letters, you can "mount" a drive anywhere in your filesystem.....like clicking on c:\program files, takes you to a different hard disc, seamlessly....knoppix however mounts them and sticks them on the desktop, windows style, but they are named after the physical device......EG....IDE hard discs will be hda, hdb, hdc etc, the numbers after show the partition number.....eg hda1 is PROBABLY your C: drive hda5 is prob D: (ask microsoft about where partitions 2 3 and 4 are, LOOOOOONG story) SATA, SCSI and USB discs are sda sdb sdc etc.) BUT MS won't tell anyone how NTFS works, so if the drives are NTFS knoppix MAY read them, but I'd advise against saving anything to a windows drive from knoppix.
