Surfing around the fanclub on NewOrderOnline will show you that one of the most enjoyed band of everyone here is the Cocteau Twins.
This is one band that I have simply no idea who they are and sound like, and that I think I should give it a try...
If you had to make a top 20 of their songs, what would it be? for a first time listener?

dunno their music very well to recomend anything, but to sum up their sound:
liz frasers voice. she has a wonderful dreamy voice and she sings in a way where you can't hear words or lyrics, just a melody line.
real dreamy music, soft and light. kinda like really early lush.

p.s. massive attack's tear drop featuring liz fraser is a great song. and look! you hear words comming out of liz's mouth.

They don't sound like anyone.....that's the beauty of them. To list twenty songs is a bit much, but "Victorialand" is as good a place to start as any. I'll happily put a compilation together for you Nic, if you're interested.

In fact, a bunch of mp3s I can put on CD would be a good start, it's cheaper than sending a CD ;)

Lorelei. Saw 'em at the Royal Festival Hall just after Four Calendar Cafe came out and they started with a couple of tracks off that. No one really moved. And then they played Lorelei third song in and the whole place literally erupted with 50% of the entire audience shifting from their seats to down the front.
Came a bit late to the Cocteaus cos I always dismissed them as trite VIth Form bollocks, but caught them in Brixton in about 91. Walked into the gig late and it was like walking into a rave. Crushed all the way to the back of the Academy, about 200 degrees in there, and lazers bouncing all over the show. Magic. Blew me away.

Went to this gig, remember the lazers vividly but was it really 11 years ago? Only time I saw them regrettably.
Strongly recommend 'Heavan or Las Vegas', a masterpiece from start to finish.
If you aint heard them before Nik, this is gonna be like waking up on 26 December & finding unopened xmas gifts.

Don't think Treasure is a compiliation. The only one I recall from that era was The Pink Opaque.
Cocteaus.. great band... seen them a few times (in fact they were one of the first bands I saw, when they were touring Treasure - at the old Saddlers Wells theatre)....
good intros - if the Pink Opaque is the comp I think it is, it's the 2 x 12" Tiny Dynamine & Echoes in a Shallow Bay combined - and well worth a listen. If not, both these 12"s are great...
Garlands through to Blue Bell Knoll are all fantastic albums.
Garlands and Head Over Heels have some pretty standard Goth influences but the overall mood, sound & structure of both the albums make them well worth checking out.
Treasure, Victorialand and Head Over Heels are all well-worth spending time with, and there's a bit more breathing space on them than there is the first two albums.
The Pearly Dewdrops Drops and Aikea-Guniea eps are also must-haves.... personally I lost interest a little by the time of Heaven Or Las Vegas due to a slight case of overbombing I guess, but by all accounts the later work stands up pretty well too...
also worth checking out for an idea of the context of 4AD records at the time are the first This Mortal Coil album It'll End in Tears and the 12" Song to The Siren - and for the classy cover of the Tim Buckley with Liz Fraser vocals...

Heaven or Las Vegas is indeed a fine album...remember the first time I heard it, sitting in my girlfriends Chevy Cavalier, I was completely astounded by the tape...ran out and bought it...of course, seeing as how I no longer own a cassette player...it's about worthless to me...I guess it may be time for an upgrade...
I have just two Cocteau Twins albums: "Garlands" and "Treasure" - both of them are pretty good - the first one is darker and more gothic, but the second one has some awesome drum sounds - really roof-shaking stuff! 
I actually acquired them off my sister to be honest - she ended up handing down a lot of old vinyl LPs when she moved out of the North East in the late 80s, so, rather than dump them all into charity shops, I ended up having most of it...
Never been too avid a follower of their stuff - they're not really my kind of thing - but at least two Cocteaus albums is better than none at all.....
I have downloaded Iceblink Luck, and I had forgotten just how beautiful a track it was...the music has a vaguely Cure type sound to it (or is it just me???)...but I remembered one of the problems I had with this group...I have absolutely no idea what the hell Liz is saying in this song...almost like trying to decipher some of the things that you English and Scottish folk were saying to me when I was in the motherland just a little while back...
the only people I had no problems understanding were Angie and her son...damn us yanks....
