I'm usually a really hard sell with anything,but got suckered by Vodafone to sign up and get a'dongle'
Once I'd finished giggling at the very word,natch..it rather appealed to me that I could sit in a field if I so wished,with my lappy on my lap...The salesman,who had excellent sales patter said I'd never look back,lying twat.It's rubbish.
Is there anyway to speed this up,or should I just plug the thing back in the wall and put it down to experience?
Know any tricks,Cambo?

I've got one. They're not as fast as home broadband, but they are handy if you're in a field or your connection is down for some reason.
(this is based on experience rather than tests with graphs and that)
I've had it a while but just stopped bothering with it.As I'm paying a few bob each month for it though,I thought I'd give it another bash.Still shite slow though,and it cuts out every bloody few minutes.
It seems to operate on 2 connections. 3G which I can just about live with,it's still slow. And GPRS which is atrocious.No good for streaming video.
Furthermore,it hops between the 2 connections at random and I have no control over it.
You can imagine the frustration a blerk might have whilst trying to watch some Frankie Vaughan,and it just hops itself over to GPRS without a bye or leave...
Is yours much the same Col?
I certainly don't use it when it's time to get it on. I'm a hungry machine. I need total, fast coverage and complete access to all the internet has to offer. I can't wait for technology, I need a stable connection that lasts for hours. I need to send at twice the rate I receive. It's important to give. I need flexibility and durability and above all I need resistance to heat. Those dongles won't take the kind of two-way traffic I'm providing for more than a few hours, and that's no good to me. I need a good connection and I need it to last all night long. I don't need to think about security, I need to know I'm safe for the whole night and well into the morning.
But for general emailing and other light duties when away from home, it's fine.

I have an O2 one, and yes they are lumpy, grumpy, and particularly with O2, everything useful is firewalled. Lying sales slag told me it would be fine for online games (I specificaly mentioned using Steam).......Steam is blocked by their proxy, wankers.
Tips? If you got a little USB extension lead with it, use that, freeing the modem from the fields around your PC/laptop can help the connection strength a little.
Mine runs beterrn 1/2 meg and 2 meg usually.

As Col said, it's no sub for a proper broadband connection, but it's bloody handy.

I don't need to be in the field to feel the need for a dongle, find I get the urge when something as simple as passing the melon section of the local market...

got a banla dongle on 3 network,has to be the biggest pile of dogwank i've ever encountered in my life.
Takes far too long for a page to load,if you are also running Norton and windows messenger (which he was) you may as well forget it.

Nuts mate, if the machine has Norton on it, I am genuinely surprised it can even boot. Get that pile of wank off her machine and insall AVG (and/or teach the offspring a clue), Norton does more harm to the user experience than any virus, fact.
Using a mobile broadband dongle [1] when possessed of a perfectly good home broadband, is a bit daft. But using one to spark up googlemaps in the arse end of nowhere, or get a weather forecast at the beach, or just to post ballix on NOOL from work where the firewall says "Category, grumpy old cunts is blocked".
I want numbers people, give me numbers and I shall tell thee if the level of wank you are suffering is standard or unusual.

[1]DO NOT like this current trend for "dongle=mobile broadband modem", last time I looked there were still bluetooth dongles, authentication dongles (from whence the name originates), and flash drives.

Didnae realise he had Norton on till i had to use HIS comp as mine was back at curry's (that's another story!).
Norton removed pronto when big bruv got hold of it,AVG installed and C cleaner to clean all the porn off it,the dirty little swine! 
That C cleaner is a fantastic prog cambo,u heard of it? got to be one of the best free progs out there!
Mind you,that SKY broadband is NOT much better,mate lives 3 doors down from the exchange and is STILL only getting 3meg from a supposed up to 10meg package!

was in pc world (yeah i kno) tother month,i was walking round looking at summat and when i returned bastard salesman trying to sell ma wee cuz one of them dongle bangla/lappytoppy deals,fucked him right off sharpish and lent her the money for a lappytoppy ,Virgin connected on FRI 
Sky is pretty turgid I believe, but you get what you pay for I suppose. Try, if you can be arsed, unplugging everything but your broadband modem/router/hub (just to test of course), also if that doesn't improve it, take the faceplate off the phone point and plug into the engineer's socket, if it still sucks, you're just getting shafted (or you live in a really old part of town and the broadband is getting to you down some barely connected copper oxide). Ours was fucking us about and we got MUCH better speeds by putting the modem in the hall, beside the phone point, connected straight to it by just the little lead you get with them (no 40ft telecoms infrastructure projects as we previously had). The reason that is good is that the phone signal is infinitely more fragile and susceptable to getting fucked on a long cable run, than will and ethernet signal (ethernet will lose it's sync over distance before the signal strength degrades, apparently).
Obviously if your machines are connected to the moden via wireless, you're basically just cunted, wireless is snakeoil bollox unless you're only making light, non-critical net use, and you're 5 feet from the access point.
I use my O2 dongle with my Asus 900a netbook (great machine, but the linux installed when it arrived had to be replaced with Ubuntu-netbook-remix, because it acted like Vista, fucking with the hard disc for no reason.....bloody odd because the Asus 900 I bought for my mum, identical except OS version, CPU and hard disc, runs like an absolute DREAM). I've had it running at 2meg/s before, but usually 1/2-1meg. Their DNS servers are bollox, and drop offline a lot (this is when the browser says "looking up neworderonline......." forever), so I fed it the IP addresses of some public access DNS servers, cos I'm cleverer than it!
I do so little in windows, that I rarely have need of cleanup progs, though I do have a wee spring clean now and then, usually at the same time I run adaware,spybot and AVG (usually they are disabled, I rely on having a clue, and being lucky). In linux cleanups are not usually needed, you have a "home" folder, where every single thing you do is saved....all your personal program settings, your desktop, internet cache, downloads, the lot.....sort of what "my documents" SHOULD work like. When /home/steve gets a bit full there is an amazing proggy called "kdirstat" (for windows, "windirstat"...ported straight from linux), which shows you all your folders....sorted by how much stuff's in them.......makes finding the self-emancipated-african-american-in-the-winter-fuel-stocks a doddle....give it a go.
