Bruce Forsyth has said the nation should get a "sense of humour" about the Strictly Come Dancing race row. The veteran presenter called for people to accept the apology offered by Anton Du Beke after he said his celebrity dance partner Laila Rouass looked like a "Paki". Forsyth described Du Beke as a "lovely sensitive guy" who can be a "bit mouthy and can say quick things off the cuff". He said in days gone by the "slip up" would have been treated in a more light-hearted way. "We used to have a sense of humour about this," Forsyth told TalkSport. "You go back 25, 30, 40 years and there has always been a bit of humour about the whole thing. "At one time the Americans used to call us 'limeys' which doesn't sound very nice, but we used to laugh about it. Everybody has a nickname. "And Anton is such a sweet guy, it's such a terrible shame."

Pakistan only came into being 60 years ago and paki means pure, so it's land of the pure instead of land of the Afghans etc,

Paki is a term of abuse rather than a description of an ethnic group, both paki and TP are often used within the community.

Whilst it may have started as an abbreviation, it has become a term of abuse and as such it isn't a term we should use. The problem some people have is that they are confusing the word because it is an abbreviation. Few people would consider calling black people nigger because it is quite clearly an insult, yet use of the term paki seems more acceptable because it can be used as an abbreviation. Simple fact is that it has so often been used as a term of abuse that the recipient sees it as such. Had it simply been an abbreviation I don't think there would have been a problem. Put your brain in gear and if a "nickname" is received as an insult, don't use it.

I don't think Du Beke was being offensive, just naive. I'm sure he wouldn't use the terms nigger, chink, wop or dago because they are obviously offensive. The word Paki can be used as an abbreviation, it can also be used as an offensive term. We live in an age where a racist crime is one that is denoted racist if the complainant perceives it as being racist.

Put your brain in gear and decide whether the term paki is one worth using. Many people have got this message, why fight it?

However strange it seems for us this was the language of his generation. when we're all bruces age people might think we are offensive because we joke about yanks and paddys and jocks etc. we cant judge a previous generation by the values they held in those days. things change.

I dont know if this du beke guy is a racist or not, but he would seem to be pretty thick, who in their right mind would even say that to a girl and think it was funny in these days, is it ok to refer to someone as looking like a paki? im not sure, but i know that it would not be looked upon favourabley by most people and therefore i wouldnt say it,only a knob would think it funny to say it to a girl who looks as if she may actually have some pakistani background, and who is probably very sensitive about such things. His real name is Tony Beck. He just pimped it up to be on telly.

I my experience 'Paki' and it's use is all about context. Plenty of my colleagues use it in a disparaging way, and skin-heads hiss it in a rascist way - but equally I've heard it used as a term of affection when talking about Pakistan or it's people.

As ever though, with the GBP, this whole episode happened and was resolved a fortnight ago, but there still appears to be need for mass offense by proxy.

Yeah, but "resolved" almost certainly in large part because both the offender and the offended have careers which depend on it being 'resolved'. Lots of things can be forgiven and forgotten when large amounts of money are at stake - and the BBC as an institution is certainly no exception to this rule.

It's a storm in a teacup, for sure, but the fact that there needs to be some sort of quasi-national debate about why calling someone (with dark skin) a paki is a no-no speaks volumes.
