Actually, Spotnick, it's very interesting that you quote the entire chart listing there showing the last week positions too, as - judging from what we see there - there is just ONE new entry in the whole top 30. !!

Is that what the charts are still like largely in Canada? Cos here in UK, as everyone knows, at least half of those thirty places would be taken up with new entries (those that just zoom straight in the charts and out again in days), such is the increasingly fast turn around of the charts these days - thus rendering them a quite meaningless demographic - much less a barometer of the record-buying public's tastes. More like how smart, cunning and shrewd the record companies and their marketing groups are at "selling" their artists rather than an indication of the record's true artistic worth.

One some occasions the entire top six or top seven have been new entries - or they can comprise at least a good half of the top 20. It appears in US/Canada, charts still base much of their figures on airplay as well as sales, hence the rare honour of you still seeing records CLIMBING up then falling down rather than here in UK where a good 90% of all hits enter at their highest position only to - especially in New Order's case - tumble down the charts the next week with a few anvils strapped round their neck.

Thanks for the introduction Hubert. What Hubert wrote is absolutely right: the singles chart is a scorecard for the game in which the marketing departments of the major and large indie record companies compete for airtime and public attention in which singles are part of the gameplan to launch a new artist or promote an album or a film. If you want to know what has been happening in the game in the UK in the last few weeks and months and what may happen in the next few weeks and months read on.

The first single by Darius is number one this week but if the single had been released a few weeks ago it may not have topped the charts because Gareth Gates' latest single may have beaten it so the record company almost certainly held the Darius single back until most fans had bought Gareth's single (by the way, in order to clear the way to number one for the Gareth Gates single his record company deleted their Elvis vs. JXL single which was still selling well long after it was released and may have stopped Gareth getting to number one). Coldplay's new single is out this week and will probably be number one next week which will help increase airplay in the run-up to the release of their album (and Toploader's record company will be cursing because that's what they wanted when they scheduled their single for release on the same day).

Quite a few record companies seem to fancy their chances of replacing Coldplay (who will probably plummet down the charts that week because the hype surrounding the release of "In My Place" has been huge and started at least a month ago) at number one the week after because on 12th August new singles by Daniel Bedingfield, H & Claire, Hear'say and the Sugababes are released. The following week won't be a one-horse race either because on 19th August there are new singles from Atomic Kitten, Enrique Iglesias and Mint Royale (which sticks out like a sore thumb - a few years ago when the dance music scene was still thriving releasing a great dance single was a good opportunity to thwart a rival record company's plans and you could also make money by licensing to other record companies who wanted it on their latest compilation album or you could keep it to put on your own compilation album).

From then on the competition gets even more hectic because the peak period for record sales (the run-up to Christmas) isn't far away so the new singles and albums by established acts that the record companies think will be lost in the Christmas rush to sell the debut albums by Pop Idol contestants and "greatest hits"/"best of" albums (I'm mainly thinking of Suede because their album was finished months ago and its release date was announced shortly afterwards but I'm also thinking of Underworld and Paul Weller) will be released in September and October when they will stand a better chance of getting airplay and getting into the charts . The first big greatest hits albums being released in time for this Christmas will be the ones by Ash and the Manic Street Preachers (although they are being released so early by Christmas a lot of copies will be covered in dust in the back of record shops) but I don't know what others will be released this Christmas because most acts who have been around for more than five years and/or have had more than one hit have already released at least one "greatest hits" or "best of" album (and if you don't believe me if you look around you will find that there is a "best of" Flowered Up) but I suspect there may be another Rolling Stones "best of" on the way.

Once Christmas is over and the trophies have been handed out (apart from the "Brit Awards" which are the music business equivalent of the end-of-season play-offs) the new chart league season will start and the record companies will release new singles or albums by new acts that they hope will have long and lucrative careers or give their runts of the litter one chance before dropping them. Unlike football as each year passes fewer people take much interest in the chart game and unlike football as each year passes more fans get what they want without paying for it.

Good to see that popular music is the same crap everywhere. Quite obviously there is no room left to get a record like errmm..Crystal edgeways.

To give you an example: Number 5 in the Top Forty: "Asereje" by the imaginatively named combo "Ketchup". This song is the "Hit of the Summer". Says who?

Funnily enough it was decreed before the Summer started and before anyone had had a chance to listen to it. This song trascends the musical scene to set a new low in the history of civilization. It is a cover of a song by the Bay City Rollers (or other Three Barrelled Group), the clever bit is that the lyrics are warbled phonics English. They are somethin like wachou wachou wichou tut tut tuut. Of course it has got an idiotic dance attached to it whereby you have to cross your hands horizontaly a number of times, then move to the side, whatever.

Come come Armageddon come.

While it's clear from these posts that crap tends to permeate the charts everywhere surely us Brits have the worst luck when it comes to the current number 1. Fucking Darius. A face you'd never tire of punching. "Can you feel the love in this room?" No. Fuck off.

We need punk all over again (or preferably the barbarians all over again)

By the way - what on earth are two 1994 releases still doing in the charts there? I refer to NINE INCH NAILS (Closer) and RADIOHEAD (My Iron Lung) ?? That is MOST strange.... is there any reason for this?

The singles charts have become very predictable as the major record companies have become more skilled at hyping, releasing and promoting music. The more you attention you pay to how the record companies work and what they are planning to do the better you can predict what is going to happen in the singles charts. So instead of betting on horse racing even though you know little about the horse racing scene or betting on football which you may know more about but doesn't offer good odds if you want to speculate with a view to accumulating you may want to try placing bets on what will happen in the singles chart, not in a few days time but in a few weeks or even a few months time. For example, what odds could you have got on three Pop Idol contestants having number ones by the end of the year or Elvis Presley having a number one single in 2002? Since Coldplay's single is in the shops it probably won't be worth betting on it and there aren't any obvious future number ones on the horizon so instead of placing risky bets find lists of forthcoming single releases, predict which ones will go to number one but don't put any money on and on the Sundays after the singles are released check the chart to find out if you were right. If you turn out to be good at predicting what will happen betting on the singles chart could be a better bet than betting on horses or football teams.

By the way, betting could mean placing a cash bet in a bookies but it could also mean challenging a mate in a pub with the loser buying drinks.

Well Ricardo it's shocking to know that, because while we Spaniards have never been any good at making music (our strengths lying mainly in sanctity and war waging, often combined) you Brazilians have got a reputation to live up to as music makers. I have only been once to Brazil and found the music there quite good, except perhaps for the omnipresent evangelical music and certain incomprehensible interest in Alejandro Sanz.

Humidity - don't we all just love it? Here in UK it's been muggy as hell for quite a while now (global warming it is then) with short periods of hot stifling sunshine punctuated by predictable heavy torrential rain and thunderstorms (like one gets here in Britain all the time now) and the bank where I work in had its air conditioning fail just two days ago and of course, it's been absolute unbearable here - yer can't even strip to the waist if your life depended on it...I hate wearing ties as it is! - anyway digression over! ;)
