Not sure if many here enjoyed Band of Brothers, which has to be the best war movie/miniseries that has ever been produced, but Spielberg and Tom Hanks are making a new one that looks damn good, called The Pacific... airing March 15th here in the States. Here's the trailer:

Band of Bruvvers was just breathtaking, hope this continues the good work.
Thing is, when I think of the Americans in the Pacific I keep being reminded of hundreds of servicemen being picked off by sharks after their boats were sunk. I really hope they don't have an episode dedicated to that - my worst nightmare.

I agree that the sinking of the USS Indianapolis has to be one of the most horrifying stories. Makes my skin crawl. But it probably won't be included, as that was a Navy warship with all sailors aboard... the Pacific is about the amphibious attacks on Japanese Islands by Marines, and specifically 3 Marines that did not have anything to do with the Indianapolis.

I let it pass me by until now,as I assumed,wrongly,it would just be a bulled up Yanky glory story of how General Patton's 3rd Army waltzed into Europe and wiped the floor with the Germans...but it's not like that at all.It's shows probably very much how it was,an extremely difficult campaign scrapping for every inch against the unbelievably hardened German war machine. It drives home just what a struggle that war was,and they should show 'Band of Brothers'in schools.Lest we forget,heroes the lot of them.
My father watches some of these programmes.
I am still waiting for a Russian counterpart. From what I have learnt in history books, 80% of the German army was on the Eastern front... And it must have been more difficult to Germans to surrender to the Red Army than to any Western Ally...

The series is also a great learning tool to show how different styles of leadership affect how people work and what they attain. It was a mandatory watch for all my newly promoted non-commissioned officers, when I was in.

Well there was Enemy at the Gates, that was pretty good, but BoB good
I had nightmares after the Bastogne episode of BoB.
Nearly shit myself when I realised the the bloke playing Winters was a Brit.
One thing I don't recall seeing in BoB though, is any mention of the most innovative and forward thinking unit in the US Army Air Whatever....The Kentucky Luftwaffe, who's tactic of dropping the bombs wherever the fuck they like (usually on allied lines), became the dominant strategic plan within the new USAF :D
(may not have been "Kentucky", it was a State's name anyway, bestowed by the poor cunts on the ground they were bombing.....because at the time, the push through Italy, there wasn't much actual Luftwaffe around to bomb them.....nice of their countrymen to help out)

For many years before he died, Sergio Leone had planned to make an epic* film about the siege of Stalingrad. Check out Christopher Frayling's wondrous biography "Something to Do With Death...." for more tantalizing details. As it is, his last flick was "Once Upon a Time in America" - which reduces even the most rugged types rounds here to tears. Doesn't it, Mr Jarvis??

I was just thinking about "When Trumpets Fade" an HBO movie about the Huntegren (probably misspelled) Forest. Great movie with no hero, just one anti-hero... really liked that one... recommend that, much better that Saving Private Ryan, but same time period (1998 I think).
